View Full Version : Belfour May Sign With The Wings

Well, it may happen after all. Man that sucks.
Belfour paid a visit to the Wings this week, and passed a physical. He is looking for a small, incentive laden contract.
Please, please, please Mr Holland, don't sign this jerk just because you want a veteran goalie. The guy is a prick. And he's injury prone. This team needs to get younger. We have 3 or 4 good prospects in the minors, use them. Or stop drafting goalies!
Shanahan is looking for a deal worth $5 mil a season, after making just over $2 mil this past year. It was too rich for LA's blood. Boston has offered, or is considering offering 2 years at $9.8 mil.
Someone please sign him, so he doesn't come back to the Wings.
Mark Mowers was told the Wings wouldn't be resigning him this year, and he just signed with Boston, and reunited with Dave Lewis.
Mowers is a decent role player, and a class act off the ice, but he never received much ice time from Mike Babcock. Good luck to him.
Perhaps with Lewis and Mowers in Boston, Shanny may seriously consider signing with the Bruins.:fingerscr

I can't stand Belfour. There must be someone else out there.

Well, as much as I hate to say it: Legace hasn't been picked up yet.
The only other option is to trade away some of our promissing younger players for someone else's goalie.

Belfour-Legace, Thomas-Millen. Thanks a lot. ...why don't you just go outside today and pull some wings off of flies?

This sucks!!!! Why do the Wings keep trying to pick up old fossils!!!
We should go with Osgood and Howard. If we get put put in the first round again so be it. It is not like it has not happened before.
The problem with this team is that it is too old and slow for playoff hockey. This has been the problem for 5 years now. Getting a great goaltender only masks the problem but there are no great goaltenders available. Say NO to old man Eddie!!!:frusty:

Detroit is looking at a lot of goaltenders right now, but Belfour and Hasek are both scheduled to meet with the wings this week. People say that Howard needs another year of experience before he's ready.
Here is a article about the wings Goaltending:

Thomas v Millen was something that popped into my head while I was staring at the ceiling at 5am this morning.
Legace v Belfour? I don't even want to talk about it really. Belfour has been the enemy in so many different situations, not to mention that he is, by all accounts, a colossal prick. And an old, washed up, discarded by the Leafs prick at that.
I'd almost be happier if Hasek came back. He at least was putting up GREAT numbers last year before he got injured (again). Belfour got ran out of Toronto for sucking it up so badly.
I have a friend who is a die hard Leafs fan, and he is ecstatic to hear that the Wings are considering picking up Dead Belfour. Laughing and laughing and laughing at me.

I'm fine with Hasek for a year. The big issue is health, of course.

Not Hasek again, he came up lame for the Senators too.
Especially if the price is stupid.

I can't believe the Wings are considering the Bald Eagle. That guy should have retired a couple of years ago.
I think the Dominator would be the best bet for the Wings, of the FA's available.

Yeah, and he helped win a Cup for the Red Wings.

Legace is still available, he hasn't even had a phone call yet from anyone-according to legace and his agent:

Legace would be better than old fart belfour, and I would even be fine with Hasek...

Give me the Dominator. He tied for the NHL lead in shutouts last season even missing a large chunk at the end after getting hurt. I'm bemused by the comments about Belfour that he's been to the finals, when Hasek not only has been there, but won a Stanley Cup with the Wings. That said, a rejuvenated and fit Belfour, even at 41, might have another solid year left and, if he doesn't, with a minimum salary plus incentives, it won't cost that much to find out. With Osgood around and Liv hardly inexperienced (though not in the NHL), we've got alternatives on board.

Regarding the dominator, any concerns with the salary cap?
They had to let go of McCarty and a couple others for that reason last year. I'm guessing Hasek is demanding a king's ransom.

I don't know about Hasek's expectations. I would guess he's probably in the same boat as Belfour, to be realistic.
He couldn't come out at what 40 yrs old? Coming off of a season ending injury... and demand a King's ransom. No one would bite on that.

I wouldn't be surprised if Hasek ends up signing for less than the Eagle. Depending of course on where he lands.

They're both prepared to sign for the minimum with performance incentives.

I've also heard that Belfour is a bit of a cancer in the locker room.
I'd rather have Hasek any day. At least Hasek has been good this century.
I HATE Belfour and his whacking players in the back of the legs and complaining to the refs. I can't imagine many skaters in the league would even WANT to play with him.

Man, you aren't kidding. There have been so many times that I've wanted to jump through the t.v. and attack the guy when he's played the habs and was treating the player's legs like batting practice.
The guy is DIRTY. Just chopping away, taking full, wind up hacks at the backs of guys legs.
I'm not a fan of, nor do I advocate or condone attemps at intentionally injuring a player. Nor do I ever wish for an injury to occure. But if I was that type of person, the Bald Eagle is the FIRST person I'd want someone to take a run at.

Brendan Shanahan just signed a 1 year deal worth $4 million with the New York Rangers according to ESPN: http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2514278&campaign=rss&source=ESPNHeadlines
He was getting to old anyone-37 years old!

Belfour or Legace?
Belfour: 40 games, 159 goals against, save%=.892, 0 shutouts, record 22-22
Legace: 51 games, 106 goals against, save%=.915, 7 shutouts, record 37-8
Obviously Legace is way better and he should be starting, and he is still on the market! He can't demand that much money. What are the Wings thinking?

In Hockeytown, it's Cup or bust (forgive the pun). MY BRUDDAH!

You have to get to the playoffs first! A 22-22 season for goaltending and another average goaltender that starts the the rest of the games only gives you a 6th or 7th seed at best... That type of season wouldn't be allowed in hockeytown either.

I'd rather have Hasek, but you can't go by last year's Belfour, when he had a back injury. Supposedly he's had the problem fixed by back surgery, is in shape, and eager to go. A good player who is motivated to prove something and is physically in good shape isn't such a bad bet. Legace was an excellent backup goalie, and had a great first third of the season last year, when the Red Wings were playing super (and so giving him a lot of help), but he was exposed for what he was in the playoffs, imho: the hockey version of Earl Morrall.

Zoo, Hasek was great in goal for us that one 'ship season. Then he wanted to retire to be with his kids. Then He came back for $8mil. And may have earned 1/8th of that. Then he ripped his groin again @ $8mil. but was decent enough to give some back. [ok respect]
I'm just through with his games. Give 7 shutouts Leg one more chance.

Don't like Belfour with his back problems and age. Manny is not coming back because he can't handle playoff pressure. The Edmonton crowd got to him and his post playoff comments about feeling like hanging himself etc. is not exactly a sign of confidence you want to hear from your starting goalie.

Manny sealed his fate making those comments. No team wants to hear those type of remarks replayed over and over. Also no team wants to have the suicide prevention team on the payroll just to coddle the starting goaltender.:frusty:

But I thought this article (http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060720/SPORTS05/607200416/1053)was better.
I think the FreePress has better Wings coverage, and the DetNews has better Pistons coverage.

Sheesh, you U of M guys are awfully sensitive about getting scooped by your Green MSU rivals. Excuses, excuses, excuses.
I don't care who they get as long as it isn't that lunatic Belfour. That San Jose guy looks like a playoff performer. Too bad about Legace. He did so-so but was outplayed by a guy who was stellar.
