RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Wally Szczerbiak scored 22 points to lead the Minnesota Timberwolves over the Detroit Pistons 96-92 in their final preseason game on Friday night.
Maurice Evans had a game-high 24 points to lead Detroit, including 17 in the second quarter as the Pistons built a 54-44 halftime lead. Carlos Arroyo added 17 for Detroit.
Rasheed Wallace had 12 points, Carlos Delfino 11 and Darko Milicic 10 for the Pistons.
Szczerbiak led six Minnesota players in double figures. Anthony Carter finished with 15, Michael Olowokandi and Eddie Griffin each had 13, Marko Jaric had 12 and Rashad McCants finished with 11.
"The second half, that's the way we need to play," first-year Timberwolves head coach Dwane Casey said. "The effort we had in the first half will get us right back into the (draft) lottery if we carry that into the regular season."
Evans scored 17 of his points in the second quarter as the Pistons built a 54-44 halftime lead.
Detroit played without starters Chauncey Billups, Antonio McDyess and Ben Wallace.

More from lee - start of the second etc...
Ok, what am I seeing here? Evans can thrive amid two guys like well, either Acker or Arroyo along with Delfino to do the ball handling. Evans is getting set up left right and center and nailing those shots. If he is consistently this good, and he does lead the NBA in the preseason on 3 point percentage, we truly got a steal.
Darko is simply not getting scored on. Forget anything else about Darko. His defense alone means he will play a ton. Dale Davis can rebound and play some D. Man we are deep at center and power forward this year.
Pacers down late by 10. Always love to hear the Pacers are losing.
Anyone notice not a single starter was out there for us. And Dyess has not played either. Nor Maxiell. We have played a simple three man rotation at big man. Acker is not making any mistakes and is as usual an assist machine. On defense, Acker is not showing any problems.
No Dupree. The rumors posted at the other place about Dupree being the one to be cut look very real. Again, nobody, especially after tonight, can ever see Dupree gettng any minutes over Evans ever. And Evans, surrounded by good ball handlers, is not a liability at all with his own lack of ball handling skill.
Arroyo has been another bright spot tonight. The ball is not getting turned over by him and he has dished 7 assists, while also confidently hitting his shots. But its Acker I want to see play most of the 2nd half. I like Arroyo plenty, but I want to see Acker get every op to earn minutes. Having two good backups is better than one.
Arroyo, Delfino, Darko, Davis, and Evans start 2nd half. We miss. They miss. Arroyo misses. Evans steals. Dale misses hook. Olo bounds. They miss. Darko bounds. Arroyo drives, makes, and gets the and one. Misses free throw. Davis taps out rebound. Evans gets feed for Jam. Arroyo steals. Evans misses. 3 second call on Olo. 2nd delay of game as Olo throws ball. Evans misses tech. 58-44 Pistons. Arroyo palms. Olo hits.
Evans tries to pass it inside, they knock it out. They steal. Hassel steps out of bounds. Arroyo misses. (clock running out.) Offensive foul on Olowokandi. Tech on Minny coach. Arroyo hits tech. Tech on Jaric.
Carlos makes 2nd tech. 60-46. Arroyo gets stripped. Skita misses bunny. Olo hits. Delfino misses. Olo bounds. Wally hits. 60-50. Timeout. 11 turns and 13 assist for the Pistons. Evans hits triple. 22 for Evans. 5-7 on 3's. Swipe by Arroyo. Delfino gets fed by Arroyo for fast break jam. Jaric is fouled by Arroyo, his 2nd. 2-2. Arroyo throws it away driving in on Skita. Jaric is fouled by Evans, his 3rd. 2-2. Darko runs down lane and throws it away.
Dale blocks Skita. Delfino reverse jams on fast break. 9 for Delfino. Acker in. Delfino bounds. Acker misses 14 footer. Dale misses. Acker bounds. Acker misses. Wally gets rebound. Foul on Evans. Four. Griffin for Skita.
McCants in. Olo hits and draws foul on Davis. Maxiell in for Davis, who has 9 bounds. Olo makes his free throw to complete the 3 point play. 67-57 Pistons. Delfino down the lane for a scoop and is fouled. Sideline out. Maxiell called for offensive foul. Jaric, Olo, Wally, Griffin. Delfino, Maxiell, Acker, Evans, Darko. Delfino drives in and scores. 69-59 Pistons. Dupree in. Wait, is this rumor bogus? Timeout.
UPDATE
1-2 for Olo. 3 in 3rd left. Maxiell gets blocked by Olo. Wally hits triple. 69-63 Pistons. Acker has ball punched away. We get it sideline out. Acker, Delfino, Dupree, Darko, Maxiell. Delfino gets finger roll batted away. Maxiell rejects shot. Offensive foul on Dupree. Frahm for Sczerbiac. Carter, McCants, Frahm, Griffin, Olo. Acker misses. Darko fouls McCants (3rd) Minute left in 3rd. McCants makes 1-2. Rebound Dupree. Delfino misses but Maxiell gets offensive rebound. Maxiell at line. First one in. 70-64. Made both. 71-64. Maxiell jams with sweet fast break feed from Delfino. Carter hits triple. Acker lets fly from midcourt. 73-67 after 3, and I am getting tired. Or, that is my fingers are getting tired.
UPDATE
39% to 37% on shooting in favor of Pistons. 4th quarter starts. McCants is called for offensive foul. Frahm Madsen, McCants. Darko, Acker, Delfino, Dupree, Darko misses. Maxiell could not finish. Dupree misses. Acker almost steals but they score. Just 4 point lead. Darko draws foul looking for slam. Darko makes both. 75-69 Pistons. We miss. Maxiell taps it out. We miss. Frahm misses triple but Griffin taps it in.
75-71, 10 minutes left. Maxiell almost got rebound. Carter lays it in and is fouled. Evans and Arroyo in for Acker and Delfino. 3 in lane without guarding on McCants. Arroyo makes tech. We miss. Foul on Dupree. 9:14 to go. McCants at line. Misses first. Makes 2nd. 76-75 Pistons. Arroyo, Dupree, Darko, Evans, Maxiell. Evans misses. Arroyo gets bounds. Arroyo has 10 assists. Darko misses short off sweet pass from Arroyo. Maxiell gets foul and tech. 76-75. Timeout.
UPDATE
Not a good unit in right now. With both Dupree and Evans in, not enough ball handling to help Arroyo do the job. Arroyo has 9 points and 10 assists. Dale with 9 rebounds. Darko 8 rebounds. Delfino 6 rebounds. Pistons have 3 team fouls to 1 on Wolves. Darko gets 4th foul. Teams 4th. 8 to go in game. Carter forces and fills it. 78-76 Minny. Dupree misses from 19. Carter throws it away. Carter, McCants, Griffin,Madsen. Darko gets fouled before shot. Darko hits from 20. 78-78. McCants scores. Dupree gets feed from Arroyo and is fouled trying to jam. Dupree makes. And makes. 80-80.
6:30 left. McCants walked. Evans hits off glass. 24 points for him. Pistons up 2, 5:50. McCants hits triple. 83-82 Minny. Arroyo gets to rim, blocks Arroyo and falls on him.
Arroyo makes both. 11 feeds and 11 points for Arroyo. Carter hits. Carlos out of bounds using screen from Maxiell. Pistons one point down with 4:30 to go. McCants hits runner down the lane. 20 second timeout by us.
Pistons held out Ben, Dyess, and CB. They held out KG and, and well I am tired. Their guard. Troy Hudson.
87-84 Minny. Jaric about to come in for Minny. Arroyo gets shot blocked. McCants ran over Ron Dupree. Pistons ball. Arroyo, Dupree, Darko, Maxiell,Evans. Delfino about to check in. Evans misses. Arroyo- great scoring and assists combo
Darko- pretty solid too with 10 and 9? At least 1 block it sounded like.
Evans- unless these last few games were a fluke, we stole this guy!
Davis- we got what we hoped we would get, toughness and rebounds
The best of all worlds will be if the Pistons can play everyone this year and still find a way to win 60 games. I see less playing time for the starters as a way to keep them from getting bored and losing to bad teams.

Big kudos and thanks to Lee, then. (Way to steal the credit, MW.)
Arroyo 17 pts, 12 assists; Evans 24 pts, 4 rebs, 2 assists 3 stls; Sheed 12; Delfino 9 pts 6 rebs 2 stls; Darko 10 pts, 9 rebs and 1 block; Davis 5 pts and 9 rebs.
Darko gets 1 block immediately, but by my count finishes 2 blocks short of Mourning for the league lead in preseason blocks.

It may be getting to the point where opponents are respecting Darko's shot blocking abilities and are being more careful around him. That will improve his D and he won't get as many fouls. Also, the refs should be aware of it too as the season progresses.

Nice job Guys...
Nobody answered the question is ...How did we lose???
Did we play perrrrfect ball and it was all the refs fault?
You know it's gotta be time to give Mr. Carlos Arroyo his due props.
The man is not turning it over... he been a pleasant surprise with his consitent scoring... and the assist speak for themself...
What the hell are we waiting for.. let's give the Puerto Rican some luv!
If you saw the clubhouse piece today you know that C.A. is one of the main men keeping it loose... The dude is a card. lol
Alright .. so he ain't the defensive stopper... I'm here to say that C.A. is a major asset for all of his other contributions...

Who needs TV? . . . . Well, I do, but you guys did great. Thanks for taking a couple for the team.
I think from the way I heard that the bench played most of the game. If I am getting the wrong idea, I will hear about it.
Wow, Davis and Darko 9 boards each. and 15 points between them. At least the 1 DMC block and I think I remember that Davis got one, too. Now that is good bench for the 5 spot.
Carlos Arroyo must be coming around now. From the way it sounds, we have good back-up all the way up and down the lineup.
Too bad we did not pull this last one out, but I am glad to see the bench getting so much PT. That rocks!! :thumb:

Acker was plus 12 in the first half. He lost some ground in the 2nd half, but he had Dupree and Evans in with him.
Dupree was minus 15 in the 2nd half. He did not play in the 1st half. Frankly, everyone showed they could do quite well, but not if Dupree was in with them.
Lost is all my typing was that fine first half by Acker. Compared to a lousy 2nd half by Dupree. A quickly thrown up 19 footer and then a turnover by him were just some symptons. Now, I will blame this disorganization on Evans too. But Evans hit for 24 points. Which would you want on your team? A guy who can't handle the ball but who can can threes all nite, or a guy who can't handle the ball and gives you very little offense on most outings? Well, we shouold know soon.

Man, I wished we could have watched this one. Maxiell and Acker got lots of burn tonight. Delfino and Arroyo got a lot of points. What lost it for us? We lost all our momentum when we played Dupree and Evans together. Bad combination. Big lack of ball handling. Other than that, the Pistons played pretty darn well in this game. And they were down and came back to lead late. In a real game, we would have put in a bit more defense right there at the end and maybe kept them from shooting that 3. Remember, just the preseason. But Minny apparently wanted to win this one, putting some of their starters back in at the end to try and win it.
We had no regular starters in to start the 2nd half. Amir Johnson never played, and for the preseason, got very little burn. The real thing starts next Wednesday.
Pistons got 20 assists, 12 of them by Arroyo. They won the rebound war 46-43 if I heard right just now. Thats the last game before they make their decision. From what I can see, Dupree is not sticking around. Unless Hunter will retire. Dupree could have been just the right defensive sub at the end of this one.
Dale Davis played and did well on the boards.
The stats: Carlos Arroyo 32 minutes, 17 P, 12 A, 6-12, Mo 31, 24, 4 boards, 2 assist. Sheed had a dozen. 11 From Delfino with 6 B. 10 boards, 9 points, and a block from Darko. Blaha says we find ourselves much much deeper than last year. Nine bounds for Davis. I'm done. Tired. Catch you all later.</B></B>
Minnesota trailed, 92-91, before Griffin buried his shot from the arc with 16 seconds to play. After Detroit missed on the other end, Anthony Carter, who scored 15 points, drained a pair of free throws to cap the scoring.
We can assume the foul was intentional.
Detroit was outscored 29 -19 in the 4th quarter.

My vote for the final roster spot goes to Acker. I think the kid's got game. With Hunter out, we need the extra ball handling more than Dupree's game.
No question Dupree had the better camp, plus he looks much more confident. He may very well end up with the Spurs as rumored. Not a bad situation for him.
If J-Max is able to pull a Cameo or two, he and Mo Evans should more than make up for what we lose in Dupree. Especially given available minutes.

I listened to it online like all pre-season 1130. I know it is pre-season, but our bench looks awesome. I think our biggest issue this year is we must play hard for 82 games. The Eastern Conference is to tough to keep getting 2 and 3rd seeds. Even when we beat the Miami;s and Pacers of the world, we are wasting to much energy on it. Lets draw washington or someone for a relaxing first round.

Thanks a million to Lee for the insight into the game. That Acker Dupree battle goes back and forth. Good to hear Arroyo had a good game. Its good that the bench got a lot of minutes but what was the decision on the starters. Don't they need floor time too.

Our starters played 98 to there 124, thats including Arroyo, and Dale. why was Chauncey, and Ben out anyway? even though Dale started Darko played more than him with 38 minutes. yet again I don't even care that we lost because its the preseason.
From what i've seen this preseason our bench has a lot to give us:
-Carlos Arroyo: Very great passer(12 assists against Minnesota), and he will make his opponent gaurd him because he can score good, and he can't expect him to only pass. Also a good ballhandler.
-Maurice Evans: Even though he's small for his position he has the ability to block shots, and rebound very well because of his athletic ability. He can gaurd people well on the perimeter, and he can take the opponent to the hole. most of all though he can be the perimeter shooter we need of the bench he can hit that mid-range, and that 3 very well(17 points in the 2nd quarter).
-Carlos Delfino: Good ballhandler, and a very good slasher, another thing this team needs, he can hit that open shot drive to the basket as well. he needs to do a better job of sticking with his man, but he can rebound well and steal the ball too.
-Darko Milicic: Very good interior defender he blocks shots very well, and gets rebounds. Good shooter for a big man, and he has the ability to go in the post and create damage. Good free-throw shooting for a center, and he's a very good paser for a big man.
-Jason Maxiell: He was a good shotblocker in college, and he in time he might become one in the nba. He can take it to the to the hole very well,a nd he has shown he can hit his jumpers even down the stretch of close games.
-lindsey Hunter: he'll dog the other opponents gaurds and create a lot of turnovers.
-Ronald Dupree: Gives us a lot of hustle, and he can jump very well and get boards and finish close to the hole. He's improved his jumper a lot.
-dice: we know he'll do good in the regular season and playoffs. He can get boards hit the outside jumper and hit that turnaround about 50% of the time.Plus he has a lot of experience in big time siuations. 6th man of the year.
-amir johnson: have not seen much of him. Has a lot of athletic ability, and people say he's very good so in time he ,ight help this team.
-dale davis: He'll give us leadership and some interior defense plus he can still score.
-Alex Acker: if he makes the team he'll give us a good jumper, good asists, and some defense. He just needs to learn to not waste time by holding the ball too long. I hope we can send him to europe, an them get him back.

If you listened to it all preseason, wouldn't it be better to say our bench "sounds" awesome?
LOL...
Maybe He's got a pic of the bench taped to his monitor?
That Argentinian Fella does look fairly daper in Red, White & Blue.:P
GREAT!!! I'm happy for him. Didn't get to follow the game ( took my wife and some friends out for dinner and dancing), but I kept telling you guys Arroyo will prove the doubsters wrong. Way to go, CA!!!!!:thumb: Now, where is Max????
Arroyo had very impressive numbers. If he plays like that every game the Pistons would win over 60 games. I will gladly take more Piston wins instead being right any day.

It's all good, my man. We are rooting for the same team.

Yes we are. I mentioned recently that even if Carlos gets traded, I want you to stick around. :D
