This league is a lot of fun Superstarov. :good:
It's revived my interest in hockey. In fact, it's my favorite fantasy league between football, basketball and hockey. I found a favorite player (Lecavalier) and I'm going to root for the Lightning (always followed them from a distance since Bill Davidson owned them).
The other day, I even ordered a Lightning jersey with Lacavalier's number 4 (but my name) on it. Can't wait till it arrives.
We need a hockey smiley. Maybe one with a Potato slamming a Russian into the boards. :nerner:
P.S. Don't let Slippy read this. He gets really ticked when I mention HOCKEY.

SS, you got PM.
Woody kicked my butt. What do you do when you have 2 SHO and his goalies rack up 5 wins in a week?
I need more goalscorers...
Woody

First, I should have kicked Micro's butt a lot worse. His goalies went bananas. I should have won 3 out of the four catagories (and only got one.)
Tater is next. The war is on!! Only half my guys are playing most days, so I'm only playing with half a deck. BUT, I can beat some guy from that COW COLLEGE with half a deck any day.
THE big game is Saturday!! Tater can only look on in envy.
When Saturday is over, the Tater will be COOKED!!!!

Sorry Woody. Taters win it 7-4. :cheerlie-GOAL:

You've got a great squad woody. Nice free agent moves. I'm constantly looking over my shoulder and rooting against your team (nothing personal).
Go Super go! Super's guys are capable of exploding on any given week so watch out. His goalies are pretty good too. He is no easy mark, believe me.
But the team we all need to watch is Bezeach. He drafted well and is putting too much daylight between himself and the pack.
And you better watch your hiney too because Jammers team is HOT on YOUR tail.

No need to worry about Bezeach. Those beach-bums are only hot while the sun and the chicks are out. Once the sun goes down, he'll cool off.
And no need to worry about Jammer either. Those 5-5 records aren't good for anyone but the Lions.

My boy Huet has been on FIRE lately.
I figured you'd take at least 3 of the 4 goalie categories, but if he keeps this up and if I can get a decent week from Raycroft and both of your goalies come down with 168 hour flus, I might be ok there.
My team isn't built for +/-. I think I've lost that cat every week so far. I'm ok at face offs, but my biggest strengths are the offensive stats.
It should be a good battle this week.

Dang. If Kipper stopped that last goal I'd be up 5-4 or something instead of you kicking my butt. Phenauf would have had the game winner instead of someone else, plus I'd have save % and G.A.A. Thats 3 cats I grab based on one goal. :hurt:Good thing it's early in the week.
I dunno, you're taking it to me. Lots of goals, lots of assists, and a hot goalie!
Oh well, woulda, shoulda, coulda.
To add insult to injury, today they took away my hockey win over super and made it 5-5. Weird! I don't care about the one point...but I lost bragging rights! :)

Here I sit, trapped between Spuds and Duds.
My guys are injured, my goalies give up too many goals, and I can't seem to find the magic potion.
Hopefully, Brenden Morrow and Wade Redden will come back from their injuries and start playing up to their career stats.
Hopefully, Yashin will only be out 2 weeks, not 4.
Hopefully Broduer will win a game without giving up 6 goals in the process.
The only thing I can count on is Brind'Amour winning 50+ faceoffs a week. (My team has gotten well over 100+ faceoff wins every week.)
Its enough to make an old man pull out his hair (at least what's left of it.)
But then things are tough everywhere. Millen is still with the Lions, Big Ben is underachieving in Chicago, and Darko is moving ever so slowly toward the HOF.
Hopefully, I can slip by Spuds into second place, and leave Duds and Super receeding in my rear view mirror.
ISN'T THIS FUN???!!!:stirthepot:

The Taters may fire their coach!
The GM brought in a bunch of good players and the dumb coach:nerd2: can't figure out who to play or when to play them.
Two weeks ago against a very tough Jammer team the coach cost the team a couple of points by playing a guy on Sunday who lost the plus/minus category.
So last week, remembering this lesson, he sat two goalies on Saturday in apprehension of losing the averages categories. The goalies won, of course, and had good numbers, costing the Taters the goalie "wins" category and preventing the Taters from getting a clean sweep on Bezeach and overtaking him for first place.
Fortuitously, Bezeach got his months mixed up and went to Lakeland for spring training a bit early. The Taters took advantage of his absence and pulled out a shocking and convincing rout! :gun1:Oh well, life is a bezeach.
This week we will see how the Tater coach does with his team outnumbered by a Canadien team that recently emerged from obscurity and now looks like a team to be reckoned with. A month ago it looked like the Taters tough stretch (playing Woody, Super, Jammer and Bezeach in consecutive weeks) would end with Bezeach. But now, I see we have to go at least one more week before the schedule lets up a bit.
Any applicants interested in the coaching position should apply here. A vacancy may open soon. My list of potential applicants seems to be extremely limited at the moment. I can't figure out why. As GM, I really complain complain about 2nd place. However it isn't good enough for our owner, Darth Steinbrenner.
Oh yeah, and Woody...I hope you saw that I was so close on your tail that my front bumper was almost in your back seat. I hope you enjoyed your short week in 2nd place. You didn't really think I was going to let you keep it did you? Thanks for keeping it warm for me. :stirthepot:

Is Arnie Kandor available??
TATER:
My two best centers are injured, costing me the FW catagory.
Meanwhile, my goalies win three, with one shutout, 1.4 GAA, .950 % and I lose all FOUR catagories because Roloson pitches back-to-back shutouts.
That's the second time I've hit a really hot team.
I see the sun went down on the beach boy. AND YOU'RE NEXT!!
When I get a full deck (of players, that is), I'll be right back on your bumper.

I think your guys actually are playing very well if you compare your numbers to most of the league. My guys just had a really good night and are hot right now. That could end at any time.
I'm expecting you to make up some ground tonight and it won't take much to catch me. I think it's going to be a battle the whole week.

Crosby is the real thing and if he stays healthy he should be the face of the league for a looooong time. I was going to pick him with my first choice in the draft, and thought he would fall to me at #3. But you nabbed him at #2 so I "settled" for Kiprusoff, which has worked out very well.
I got home after the games ended last night. First, I checked the NHL scores, hoping for a low score in the Pittsburgh game. (How is it that every other day for the whole week it seems like I have one or two guys facing four of your Penguins?). I can't hold them off much longer especially the way Crosby is playing.
Anyhow, I saw the score was 8-4 Pittsburgh. :bigeyes:Well, I kinda figured it would be bad given Philly's weak defense...but not this bad. So I check Roscoes scores. Yikes! Crosby has a goal and 5 assists.:pout:
I check my scores. Whew! Can you say "WHEW". Gonchar got 2 goals and 3 assists, including a SHA, a ppg, and a ppa.:whoo:
I hope my goalies play well tonight because the goalies will probably be the difference in the end.

Man, I hate it when a guy on your bench has a big game!
Sullivan has been out with an injury, so I had him on the bench because I wasn't sure when he'd be back.
So he decided to score 3 goals (1 PP) and be +2 with 5 minutes left in the 3rd to further rub it in.
The guy I inserted to take his place? 0 0 0 0 0 -1

Great matchup, Roscoe. It's still anyone's game. Both teams played their best, I think. Goaltending and offense are still up for grabs although you have the lead heading into the all important stretch drive.
I would have to say FW is yours for sure and PPG is probably mine. Other than those it won't take much to turn around any given category.

I'm embarassed to say that I haven't watched an entire broadcast in some time. It's usually the Senators or Maple Leafs, one franchise I am ambivalent to, and the other I loathe. We would make an evening of it when I lived on the left coast and it was the 'Nucks, Flames or Oil.
I imagine Don is still doing what he does. Wearing ugly suits, being politically incorrect and yelling at his co-host.

I got lucky. There are two x-factors in every NHL season (it seems like).
1 unknown goalie gets amazingly hot.
1 or 2 forwards you never heard of get hot.
I got Chris Mason when Tomas Vokoun went down, and Mason has to be the unknown goalie of the year.

I only know the guys over 35. My team has Brind'Amour, Selanne, Lidstrom, and Broduer. I've got to learn the names of all these youg guys. I'm at a definite disadvantage against you under 35 types. I should be getting at least 5 strokes a side, and that's just in golf. In hockey, it should be much more. You'all are taking advantage of me!!

Now, if the sandwich-man can only do his job, we'll all be better off.
By the way, is there a town in Ontario called Sandwich?? Maybe the micro is hiding under some rock there.
I've got Spuds, and Duds coming up soon. Well, its time to clean up the kitchen and the closets, and throw out the trash and old sandwiches.

The City of Windsor .com (http://www.cityofwindsor.com/cityhistory.php)
Early Windsor began in 1701 when an European named Sieur De Lamonthe Cadillac brought about 100 civilians and military members to settle in Fort Pontchartrain on the Detroit side of the river (North side of the now Detroit River). During 1748 - 1760 the settlement of Sandwich Township- mainly French agriculture, tobacco and refined sugar- developed on the Windsor side of the Detroit River. French civil law and settlement continued until 1791. By 1797 the Sandwich township settlement of both French and English established the city of Windsor.I grew up in West Windsor, on Sandwich Street no less.

Looks like Sandwich Street is only about 1 mile (as the crow flies) from the best Sandwich shop in he world: Eph McNally's.
I have a friend from NYC that insisted we go there everytime he came to Detroit. Said you can't get a sandwich that good in any New York deli.

While I was getting my degree in Chemical Engineering from U of M (that bowl-losing team), I worked one summer at a chemical plant in River Rouge - near the Ford plant. I didn't realize I was so near to your historic birthplace, or Eph McNally's (if it even existed back in 1956 when I was there).
My goalies pitched three shutouts against Bezeach. Now I'm fighting a bunch of rodents. This league is really wierd.

:(Are you talking about our trade? I hope not. I still think it was a good one. Both those guys you got are producing.
I'm pleased as punch with St. Louis. Lecavalier and then St. Louis have quickly become my favorite two hockey players. I think I would draft both even over Crosby, even though it makes no sense from a talent perspective.
But if you ARE talking about our league...forget it. Trade or not the trophy has my name written all over it. You may as well pin my banner up there right now in case you get too busy down the line.
Seriously though, your team and Woodrows are awfully tough. Bezeach and Jammer have excellent squads also. There are a three other good teams that are suffering from a bit of neglect (my fault for pushing them to join), but they still have time to make a playoff push with a touch of nurturing. The last two teams are not pushovers and are always dangerous.
Great league. Nice job Superstarov. Not bad at all for a U of M guy.:nerd2: I've even come to appreciate the special settings you chose. It will be interesting to see who comes out on top. Those first round byes could be crucial with teams so closely matched.

I am a born and bred American (NO canadian blood). Kalamazoo is my home, and U of M is my school. I saw my first Red Wings game at Olympia in the 1950s (which is well before either of you saw the light of day).
This is my first (and only) fantasy league. I'm learning fast - like having three goalies and one less defenseman. I'm taking notes and next year I'll actually know what I'm doing during the draft. So you'll better win this year because next year I'll be much better, which should put me well out of your league.

I am concerned that Red Line, and Super, and Slippy will be out to get me. Can I count on your protection???
Woody,
Playoffs in our league:
Top 6 teams make the Championship bracket. (The lowest 4 fight it out in the consolation bracket).
Top 2 get byes. Teams 3 through 6 play the first round while the top two (with byes) sit out and await the winners of 3-6. Winners of those two first round games play the byes (or bi's if roscoe & slippy are in the top two slots). Then the winner of those semi final games play for the ship the following week. Which is a waste of time cause ya'll can just crown me now.:king::winner_first_h4h:

Great match Woodrow. The Kipper came through for me at the zero hour. Looks like you are going to give up your spot to the club sandwich after all.:loser:
Roscoe, don't think we haven't noticed you've won 7 of your last 8...by blowout scores for the most part. I see it all started after a loss to Slippy. If that isn't a wake up call I don't know what is! Looks like right now you are the team to beat, but I'm sure you know I won't give up frst place without a fight.:starwars:
Next week there are only three days in which games will be played. There could be some strange results in the standings. :cold:

What a game last night from the Penguins. My prize rookie (Malkin) had 5 assists!
I picked up Recchi. Low risk move. He'll either start another streak up or I will drop him.

Recchi is a very good pickup, IMO. I only dropped him (after picking him up from your scrap pile) because I wanted somebody else more. I may regret that later but I couldn't resist.Thing is, I always battle within myself whether it's worthwhile to pick up an extra offensive guy in lieu of a defenseman. I hate sitting guys when there is an open spot for the lower scoring defenseman. Any idea how the numbers work out?
It's good to see Phaneuf is working out so well for you. You picked the right defenseman off my squad. I had 4 good ones, but then I realized Salei and then Kuba went stone cold. It killed me to release my Tampa guy, but I had to. I mean...9 games without a point.
Irony on Phaneuf. I remember drafting and having no clue what I was doing. (Only 3 guys plus my two goalies remain from my original draft). Anyhow, I remember you commenting when I drafted Phaneuf. You said something about being surprised I drafted him so high since he had lots of potential but had not fulfilled it yet. I said "oh oh". But as it turns out he is really blossoming and I was able to trade him and Tanguay for a great player off your squad that has quickly become a favorite of mine as well as a valuable asset to my team. Good trade for both of us, I think.
Seriously, I do NOT want to run into your team in the playoffs until the last round...if ever. I compared my numbers this week to yours and I realize that as well as I played you would have blown me out. What the hell are you feeding your guys? I think Canadians must have an insider advising them. :gossip:

I don't want to tip off my strategies too much.
I have a method for choosing free agents. But you need to have something you are good at, and I like to think my real strength is between the pipes.
I don't think you need to carry 4 defensemen unless you are concerned with improving your +/-. A lot of the top performing forwards are actually minus players because their numbers come on the power play.
The most valuable non-goalie players are + forwards, + defensemen, and penalty killers

Do you mean "+" as in plus/minus totals?
How does the fact that they kill penalties come into the equation? Do they play more minutes or something?
roscoe36
01-21-2007, 01:50 PM
Yes, +/-.
Penalty killers get you SHA and SHG. We all know those are the hardest categories to come by. Most weeks you can win those cats just by scoring one point.
There are a small # of elite players who also kill penalties. Usually coaches use defensive specialists for that role. A typical penalty kill unit is one forward, one center and 2 defensemen. A two-way center is a big advantage. Guys like Sidney Crosby never get asked to kill them. Guys like David Legwand and Henrik Zetterberg (ironically two of my best + forwards) do.

I've been taken to school.
I never heard of most of the guys you are talking about. I did drop from 5 to 4 defensemen a while back. I should probably go to three. Kaberle has done nothing (good or bad) for a long time. Iginla is hurt which reduces my scoring a lot. DiPietro is playing poorly, and, as a result of all of this, I'm playing with less than a full deck.
I wish there was some way to know who the top defensemen are on each team, and who plays on the penalty kill, so I could pick up some of the guys Roscoe knows about. Not being a Canadian is tough.
Live and learn. But it's hard to breathe under water!!:help2::help2::help2:

Woody, go to the Team Page on Yahoo (Wings, Leafs what have you) and click on Depth Chart. They will list who the top defensemen are as well as the top forwards.
If Iginla is IR, change his status to IR and add another player.
When looking at your roster on Yahoo, click EXTRA. This will show you how guys are performing over the last month, week and on the season. You can see who is trending negatively.
Being Canadian only helps me about 5%. I spend more time on this league than I do on the other 3 (combined) that I am in.

I don't think that Iginla has been classified as IR, so I can't put him on it.
I've looked at the team pages and it helps. But it doesn't say who plays on the power plays, and who plays when short-handed. That would be very good info to have.
But I'll keep looking!!

I don't mind losing, I just didn't want to finish poorly. I need to win at least one playoff game.
Woody, because lineups are relatively fluid in hockey, you can safely assume that the top defensemen play both ways (on a good team at least).
The best way to check is to see who has put up #s short handed and on the power play. Click ADD PLAYERS, switch the search to D for defensemen, and then load it up. You'll see who is available and has got ShortHandedAssists. Defensemen typically don't score short handed because they are deep in the defensive zone during power plays and would likely only get points by passing up to a forward breaking out on a turnover.
There is no bigger testament to my lack of competitiveness than the fact I will help my opponents.
Woody
01-21-2007, 04:16 PM
I've been trying that all along. Guess I just haven't figured out how to use all the info that's there.

Goaltending is tricky. I got lucky and Hasek has played well. You always want goalies from winning programs. Heck, you just want players from winning programs period.
I work the stats a lot. I do a lot of sorting. I like to see who had a good week, and I try to get opportunistic when a player goes down. Try to grab the guy who will move up in the lineup.
You're doing super good for your first fantasy season Woody. It's taken me 3 years to finally have a shot at winning one of these things.

They don't. In hockey, momentum going into the playoffs is everything. That is why the teams who just squeak into the 7th and 8th spots in each conference usually go deep. They have been playing playoff hockey leading in to the playoffs.
Last year, the 8th place Oilers went all the way to the Finals.

If I'm correct, only forum members have access to reading the fantasy threads. But even if that isn't the case, I am wondering who in the world is reading a fantasy hockey thread?

IF I am fortunate tonight, my goalie will play tonight AND play decent, win the game and I can take over the "wins" column for goalies. I can also possibly take "faceoffs won" and MAYBE "assists". That would make it 4-5, which at this point, I'll take!
Do you always score 158 goals by Thursday night or should I feel honored?:humble:
I must be crazy thinking I can beat you Cannuckians at hockey! :pound:

My big guns, Jagr and Hossa are still without a goal. As is Koivu, Vermette and Naslund.

His goalies are keeping him afloat. Shutouts galore. Hard to beat a guy who gets 4 points automatically from his goalies. Sheeeeech!!

Woody is in my playoff bracket right now. He's playing Slippy's BedBugs, so he'll probably rise in the standings this week.
Don't cry about Canada! It was only a matter of time until the back bacon found it's way to the top of the league.

Better than mine.

Yeah, Woody is good. But I have something even better.
I'm good plus I have...
LUCK!
What peaches and tomato Linguini? You lost me.
I'd like to order my hockey championship banner in a gold color, please.
Damn, seriously, that breakfast picture made me salivate. When I cook lunch I am making bacon (not that Canadian ham crap), sunny side up eggs, and toast!:hungry:

Probably.
Don't forget that Slippy was one of two teams to beat you in the last 11 weeks.
He was also one of two to beat me in the last 7 weeks.
Yes, I realize we both destroyed him in our other meeting with him.
He looks like an easy mark on the schedule, but if he ever figures out where the league page is he could be dangerous.
Then again, he tends to lose against scrubs like Woodrow.

The sun does occasionally shine in Canada. Enjoy it while you can.
Its way too early to worry about brackets. Just hope you haven't fallen all the way to seventh by then. Don't worry, the sun will set on you just as it has on the Beach Bum.
I snuck by Super, but his goalies killed me.
My head-to-head stats show that I'm GOOD. The cream will rise to the top. You guys are all living on borowed time.

You sure talk lots of shizzle for a guy up by a measly
two points. Don't you have anything better to do, like make an ice sculpture or something? You can't hold first place any better than you can hold your urine. How do I put this delicately? Uhmmm
I got it...your team SUX!!!

Woody, your goatending is formidable. I respect the playoff pedigree of your squad but Tater keeps trying to sidle up next to us and participate in a conversation between Titans of the Rink.
The only rink he is going to be playing on is the kiddie ice in the parking lot. Rinky Dink hockey just like his goaltending and goal scoring abilities.

I've also noted that you both are swapping guys in and out like Flip Saunders. You're using guys from the end of the bench who are actually fans seated nearby. Do you really know who the He** is on your roster??

Woody, there is an assumption that because I am Canadian, my fantasy hockey skills are infinitely superior to those of my competitors.
This is totally untrue. Look at Jammertime. He's Canadian and struggling like a baby seal covered in Exxon Valdez (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exxon_Valdez_oil_spill) oil.
The truth of the matter is, I relentless work the newswire hunting for the talent that escapes all but the sharpest of general managers. My scouts are in every arena compiling statistical data that the microwaves use to determine who is hot, and who is not.
Many of Potatoe's moves are window dressing as he tries to create the impression of activity, when in fact, he just likes seeing his team name pop up on the league transactions page.
After all, you don't have to be Canadian to know that modelling your team after a franchise in Tampa Bay, Florida will only lead to extra zamboni time patching up the melting ice.

YouTube - SIDNEY CROSBY top 10 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Egt-nwZ6Ym8)
In case you don't get it, the #1 highlight, he actually "palms" the puck on his stick and wraps it into the goal.

Items in your rear view mirror are closer than they appear.
You are one goalie injury away from missing the playoffs.
If he gets banged up, you are toast.
I don't know if God can hear anyone as far away as Idaho (or is it Tampa Bay), so you better be praying very loudly.

For your information, I'm pacing myself. I learned from the master, Flip Saunders, that the regular season is meaningless as long as you make the playoffs.
