View Full Version : Superstarov's Fantasy Hockey

I'm going to play fantasy hockey again this year. I'll play regardless of who I play with. But I'm wondering if any of the forum members would be interested in joining a private league.
I'll manage it.
Live Draft - Probably a Sunday night.
Points for goals, assists, GWG, PPP, SHG, and goalie stats.
No points for penalty minutes (this is just stupid)
Anyone interested if I get it going?

I just want to see what kind of respose it gets from everyone interested.
Thanks for the feedback.

It's like basketball. Which I guess I would call daily. I always do mine once a week, but it takes about 15 minutes or so.
The scoring is head to head for the week. So, like Jammertime vs Microwave Sandwiches for the week, like basketball too.

Ok. I'm in a baseball league and your lineup has to be set Monday. I actually like it because it's more hands off, but more than once this season I have been caught with my pants down, forgetting to make lineup changes Sunday night.
Since I am only playing Fantasy Hockey, everyday should be fine.

You are actually allowed to edit your line-ups until the puck drops on the game that the player is playing in.
But like I said, I usually just set my line-ups once a week. And check in once in a while to make sure no one is injured or suspended or whatnot.
Actually, if I have the time, it's not unusual for me to set my line-ups for a 2 weeks in advance, and just double check to and tinker with them here and there.

I think its a live draft Tater. This is right from our league overview page on Yahoo:
Your live online draft is set for Sun Oct 1 8:00pm EDT, which is 34 days 47 minutes from now (test your system (http://drafttester.fantasysports.yahoo.com/porttester/client/testdraft.html?id=nhl)). Please arrive at least 10 minutes early since your draft will start promptly at the assigned time. You can rank your players (http://hockey.fantasysports.yahoo.com/hockey/13050/3/prerank) up until 45 minutes before your draft.
The draft order will be randomly determined approximately 30 minutes before the draft begins.
Your league will not be permitted to conduct its draft if it contains an odd number of managers.
If you wish to leave this league, you can delete this team (http://hockey.fantasysports.yahoo.com/hockey/myleagues).

Yeah. But the last thing I want to do is put SLIPPY and LINWOOD on the spot because that just wouldn't be right to single SLIPPY and LINWOOD out for being slackers because SLIPPY and LINWOOD might be sensitive about being called slackers. I'm sure guys like SLIPPY and LINWOOD have more important things to do like feed their cats or do other stuff like that because if the other stuff wasn't important SLIPPY and LINWOOD would just go ahead and take the 1 minute and 42 seconds it takes to join and just join and then we wouldn't have to avoid using the names of SLIPPY and LINWOOD in order not to rush them and make them feel like slackers.
Micro, I hope you appreciate the kinder gentler version of Darth Tater. I really wanted to call out SLIPPY and LINWOOD, but instead decided to use tact. It's the new me. :decision:

I'm going to make a hard run at Sean Avery (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sean_Avery), he led the league in penalty minutes last season, and was almost 50 penalty minutes ahead of the second guy. Those type of numbers will really help your fantasy team!

Well, I personally will probably go for 4 defensemen, 3 goalies, and the rest forwards, trying to make sure that I have at least 3 guys who can play the C. That's in an ideal world. But it may not happen that way. If you get two goalies that are pretty sure to play a decent number of games, then you may be fine with just two.
Incidentally, I had my friend who is playing with us check out the Fantasy Hockey 101 Guide, and he told me I gave up too much of my "hard earned fantasy hockey strategies".:ohwell:

I have no idea what I'm doing. I'd be hard pressed to explain the difference between cross checks and crossovers, but I'll give it my best. I love playing fantasy sports in general, so I'm sure I'll pick this up. Too bad I can't draw a nice salary for sitting on the computer all day analyzing fantasy stats and strategies.

Here is all you have to do. They make it pretty simple for you.
Go to the main page of our league, where it has the team names listed.
Click on your team's name.
There is a big box that says when the draft is. In that box toward the bottom is "Pre-Draft Player Rankings" - Click on that.
Right above where it lists the players, it says "Edit My Rankings" - Click on that.
Then you can sort the rankings by different categories, and add them to "My Players" with the arrow keys.
This way, if your turn to draft is up, it will show you the highest ranked player in your rankings that is available to draft. (I think) - Just be sure when you are done ranking your players, to hit the "SAVE" button in the top right hand area.
Also, at any point you can click on "Players" at the top of the page. I like to do this in a new window, so I can check back and forth between the player stats and the rankings page.
But from the "Players" page, you can sort players by a ton of different statistical categories and positions. Then you can bounce back to the "Rankings" page, and apply the knowledge you've just gained.
I hope this helps you guys out.
If anyone has a problem, I'll have the PistonsForum open about a half hour before the draft starts. So if you have questions, send me a personal message, and I'll try to help get you navigated to the draft.

So make sure your lines are set before the puck-drop on the 4th.

Go to here,

click on MY TEAM (menu; league, my team, players etc...)
And set your lineup (your top 12 players based upon the positions required to be filled)

I recommend setting them for each day like basketball. But I think it is easier than basketball.
The way I do it is, set my line-up for the whole week, in one sitting. Just sit down, and go through the whole week, and set my line-ups for each day. It takes about 5 minutes.

OK, thanks, I wasn't sure if we could change it throughout the week. I wasn't clear when I asked my question.
Well, the draft was fun, but I am going to get hammered all year.
I drafted my team using the Yahoo rankings as a guideline since I know nothing about the NHL. However, these rankings are set up for success in leagues with the default settings, and not for the special settings we have in our league.
I.E. my strength is in goaltending which accounts for relatively little in our league and my firepower therefore leaves much to be desired.
Prediction: 10th of 10 teams. Last place here I come.

Well, you never know. And like I said before, keep an eye on the free agents. There are always about 20 or 30 guys who come out of nowhere to become decent players. It's not like basketball, where maybe each team has a guy who show up out of nowhere.
Usually each team has a guy or two who breaks into decent playing time, after a rough start to the season. Especially European players, because not only do they have anew culture to get used to, they have smaller ice sizes and different rules as well. So some of those young guys don't hit their stride until a few months into the season.
Don't lose hope.

roscoe36

BN = On the bench (not playing)
When a player is dropped, he has to clear waivers. It's usually a couple days.
When a player has been a free agent for a few days (or longer, ie. all season) you can add him instantly.
Don't sweat injuries folks. Not unless they will be long term. You can always leave injured guys on the bench.

Ask as many as you like. This is supposed to be fun and a learning experience.
How can I tell if my lineup is set weakly, or daily?
Weekly vs. daily is a league setting. Daily means you can tweak your lineup each day. Weekly means that you lock it in before Monday.
So in a daily league (which ours is) you can make a lineup change on Friday.
In a weekly league, the guys who played monday, play all week and you can't do anything about it.
Remember, we are daily. It's much more flexible.
If I just leave the same 12 guys listed can I go all year with the same team. :pound:
Yep. ;)
Woody

I still can't find where the weekly/daily button is.
Also, the guy I dropped (F. Kaberle) is out 4-6 months with a shoulder injury. I'm trying to replace him with T. Poti, who Tater dropped.
This is getting really complex.
roscoe36
10-02-2006, 05:43 PM
There is no button.
We play daily. Everyone is playing to the same rules. Forget Weekly, it's irrelevant to our league.
Your lineup will stay the same it was the previous day UNLESS you change it. So you can start the same 12 guys and never have to touch your lineup again all season. You do not need to set it daily. It will automatically use the last days lineup.

I checked the waiver period. It is two days. That means since I dropped him Sunday night, he will not be available Monday or Tuesday.
You can claim him on waivers now and hope nobody has a higher waiver priority. However, you will move to the bottom of the waiver list. (Maybe not an issue).
Or you can wait until Wednesday and if he clears waivers you can claim him as a free agent. So if you wait anyone can claim him (including me). But if you use your waiver pick on him, he will not become a free agent and only people with a higher waiver than you (not including me...the waiving GM) can get him.
OK, I know slippy is gonna say something about my explanation so I'll simplify it:
You can get him Wednesday, Dude.

Kronwall's not exactly a rookie Woody. The Wings are expecting BIG things out of him this season. It is actually his 3rd season. He is a top 4 D-man. He won the AHL's best defenseman during the lock-out. He was named MVP of the World Championships in 2005, when Sweden won the Gold. And also was a member of the Gold winning Swedish Olypmic team.
He's a punishing open ice hitter, and likes to jump into the offensinve flow too. A lot of people in the Wings organization are comparing him to Konstantinov... deceptive power for his size, and a knack for scoring. Plus Kronwall's got some really good speed.

One more thing I forgot to mention to you guys:
Let's say your goalie plays in a game, and gives up 4 goals in the 1st period. Then he gets pulled.
Like it or not, that means that for that game your goalie has a 12.00 Goals Against Average (GGA).
Get it? If he played a full game, in the same manner he was playing in the minutes he actually did play, how would it have come ended up? Hence, GGA, goals per game average.
Now, as far as I know, even playing one period does count toward your 3 games required by your goalie.
Sucks huh?

Yeah, under this system I should have gone for one stud goalie and one star player in the first two rounds rather than two stud goalies.
Oh well, that's 4 categories I should usually win. Now I just need to figure a way to get 3 of the 7 remaining ones on a consistent basis. I probably should wait to see what my relative strengths are before dealing.

Oh, about waivers, if you guys don't know.
The more often you pick guys up off of waivers...
If you try to sign a guy on waivers, and someone else does as well...
If you do it a lot, and they never do it, they'll get the guy.
The more often you do it counts against wether you can sign them or not.
If no one else wants the guy, you're fine, but if more than one person wants the same guy, the one with the least amount of waiver pick ups will get the player.

I've made more moves than the entire league combined. I always do that with my lower ranked players. Shopping for free agents is what I enjoy most about fantasy sports. Anyhow, I don't see anyone jumping at the players I've dumped.
Injuries are already piling up for me. Plus I realize that my team isn't going to do to well with all of these offensive categories, so I'm going to enjoy the fact that I have unlimited moves to tinker with my lineup. Otherwise, it's going to be a very very long season for Taters Skaters.

Yeah, I kind of feel bad for him actually. I really liked Jose. I'm surprised they left him in there for all 8 goals. He gave up 5 goals on 14 shots in the 3rd.
The "fans" booed former Hab Patrice Brisebois every time he touched the puck too. Kind of surprising since he had just donated $50,000 to a Montreal Children's Hospital yesterday.

Its certainly nice to be in a crowd like this. Micro never told me I would have to put up with all this stuff when I signed up at the last minute to save your league.
I'm not Canadian so I'm at a big disadvantage. I don't know any of the current players.
When I was in college (back in the 1950's), I knew most of the players. I keep looking for Red Kelly, Marcel Pronovost (sp?), and Abel-Lindsay-Howe, also Alex Delvecchio (sp?).
I'd like to get rid of Yashin and get Delvecchio. I need a good center. Is Sid Abel still available??
I can't pronounce anybody's name let alone spell it. I chose my team completely on Hype. I've got an all-hype team. If their name isn't in the papers a lot, I don't know them. I've got Sakic, Lidstrom, Yashin, Selanne, and then a bunch of guys I can't even spell.
I'll be looking for Supe in round 9, and by then Darth will have been mincemeat.
