I saw this yesterday. Apparently he is going to wear the $15 kicks himself to promote them.
I'm constantly confused about Stephon. I can't figure out if he is a jerk or misunderstood.

Probably a little of both. He grew up in Coney Island, NY, and had three (or four) older brothers who were all promising basketball talents. When they didn't make it to even good college programs, the onus was put squarely on his shoulders. He began feeling the pressure at 14 years old. His father was the main culprit in applying the pressure, too.
I just got done reading a great book called "The Last Shot," by Darcy Frey. It's got some Marbury stuff in it. Frey was a journalist who spent a year with four Coney Island kids, all on the basketball team in high school. Marbury was a freshman at the time. Every time Frey asked to interview Marbury's father, the father kept asking, "How much money you gonna give me for the interview?"
Marbury's probably never had the right guidance. Someone's always wanted something from this guy.

Apparently he missed the line in his contract where he's required to help the league and their business associates soak the fans for every last penny. What's next? Floor seats for $20? Jerseys for $12.95?

It's the same type of discussion aurorakmw and I had about jerseys. Is it authentic if it's sold for less than the insane NBA sticker price? Is the authenticity of the clothing tied to how much is paid to wear it?

Shaq had a shoe he was selling at payless shoes for $19.99 a couple of years ago. Nike and the rest of those companies mark the shoes up 1500%. It only cost them about $5 bucks to make them in there sweatshops where they pay the workers nothing. The rest is all profit after you take out the endorsement fees they pay out and the marketing costs. That's why I never pay regular price for some new kicks. I wait until they go on clearance. Why pay $125 for some shoes when you can wait and get it for $60 or less a couple of months later.

I never did have anything against Stephon other than him being an opposing player. And now, I have respect for him.
That is really stepping up to the plate. I wonder if anyone else will come up with something to compare.
Maybe th4e Pistons should invite him aboard just so that he can get a ring. Then maybe both he and Dyce can get one before the window closes.
I know, the money would not work out, anyway.

Sounds like I found my new shoes! I had a pair of the payless Shaq shoes. Not too bad for $20. You definitely see diminishing returns the more $$$ you pay for sneakers.
Hopefully Steph's shoes will be popular. I don't think the big fella's shoes were that popular... probably because they aren't expensive. You don't hear cool rap songs about how much money you save getting two pair at Payless!

While browsing at the Mall the other day, I was glancing at a "Kicks" Basketball magazine with KG, Billups, T-Mac, Tim Duncan and Gilbert Arenas on the cover.
The cover said "Y`all ain`t ready for this". I said damn, are they a team preparing to play somebody???
An intriguing thought at first until I realized, T-Mac`s back would go out by the second quarter, C-Bill would do nothing but fire up 3`s, KG would make himself dissappear in the 4th quarter, and Mr Arenas would get mad and take his ball home. Duncan would go for 25/10.
Well, the story featuring the five of them was about shoe deals they all have for this upcoming year. Funny thing though, I don`t remember the prices of these kicks being mentioned, nor of Stephs $14.98 kicks!
Looks like Marbury will be like Patti Labelle on this one, "On his Own..........

I saw Marbury's sneakers at store called Steve and Barrys University Sportsware here at an outlet mall here in Ontario,California. Everything in the store was $6.98 with the exception these shoes.....By the way they had a full section dedicated to Marbury's goods with jerseys, sweats, etc. The shoes didn't appear to be the greatest quality and my 15 year old who thinks I'm rich--:( thinks that shoes under $60 aren't worth purchasing:frusty:

I've been wondering about that. It will be interesting to see if Marbury follows through and actually wears them on the court. He said he decided to get behind the sneakers because Isiah the mentor inspired him to do something meaningful with his fame, but it remains to be seen how Isiah the coach will feel about his point guard using possibly substandard equipment with a game on the line.
Getting sued for sexual assault is also meaningful. Maybe Starbury misinterpreted?

They seem to be to light to wear up and down the court for a full game without falling a part. If he does wear them, I suspect he would have to have at least 2-3 pairs to wear a game. The sweat suits don't look that half bad. Please see his website for his vision and products.

Your son represents the younger generation well. Not only will they not buy them because they are under a certain price, those who do will be ridiculed for sporting them.
Sort of like the "payless sneaker", only everyone will know!!!!!!!!

The first one I went to was in Ann Arbor back in 2004. Seems like that store only had Michigan Wolverins stuff with prices ranging from $6 to $50.
The store that I went to this past weekend, EVERTHING was $6.98 with the exception of the Marbury stuff that topped off at $14.98. They had sweats and tshirts from all of the major schools as well as other non-descripted pants, tops, and jackets for $6.98. Of course it was crowded with kids looking for affordable school clothes.
The S & B website Welcome to SteveandBarry's (http://www.steveandbarrys.com/website/index.html)
doesn't indicate they do mail order, but I am sure it is next on their docket and maybe you can order something there.
I can buy something for you and ship it, but I am sure based on low price you would want to see/feel the goods before you purchased them.

Thanks Dre.
I've been to a Steve and Barry's when I was in in E.Lansing a couple years ago. They had stuff for lots of college and Pro teams.
Their stuff was all advertised at $20 bucks or less. It wasn't the greatest, but you couldn't beat the price.
I'm really rooting for this Starbury line to take off. It may be a longshot, but I admire him for at least trying to make a difference. If anyone can get a kid to see things differently in todays world, it's a pro athlete who has been there.
I'm now a Starbury fan and I'm even going to stop rooting against the Knicks. lol.

Although are some questions about the quality as compared to Air Jordans, it sounds like it's amazing for the price.

They are made in China. I believe most of the other brands are as well.
I'm guessing they didn't cut $100 in costs out of the production to get the price so low, so I wouldn't assume their conditions are any different than the Nike plants. I also wouldn't assume the conditions are particularly good.
So, it probably costs about $1.20 to make the shoes and they sell them for $15 instead of $150. Their lack of marketing budget has to be a big advantage... and theoretically, they could sell more of these than if they entered at a price point that competes with established brands.

03-30-2007, 06:02 PM
The major brands price gouge based on the marketing of their endorsers, but is the discrepancy comparing product pricing to manufacturing costs really that huge to cover the endorsements?
If the product is quality comparable & Marbury's endorsement is successful, his manufacturer would bring the major companies to their knees and force them to buy them out.

It's just like soda (we don't call it "pop" here).
Pepsi or Coke costs 2 or 3 times what Faygo or Shasta run you.
It's all about the advertising & what not. I highly doubt the sugar in a can of Pepsi is superior to that in a can of Faygo.

Count me in as one who now has a much higher respect for Marbury. And I thought that was clever his "I would rather own than be owned" comment. I think I will steal that line and use it every once in awhile when I am debating over on the Big Ten forum why OSU is better than UM. Actually, we are quite cordial over there, but one of my friends and I get into it occasionally because he says UM owns OSU because they have the lead overall like 50 games to 35 (or whatever). My rebuttal is you can own the farm for 90 years, but if you sold it to me last year, I now own the farm. Right now, OSU owns the Big Ten. :gun1: :pound: :pound: :pound: . Surprisingly, I get along with all the guys over there. They don't take it personal. When you are in a place for a few years and go through many battles, a healthy respect develops. They understand the Buckeye is just having a little fun.

After watching Ben Wallace the other night...I decided to head to Steve and Barry's and buy a couple of pairs of Starbury's. Bought one for my son (little Bills) and another for myself.
They seem like decent shoes...nice variety of colors too. I could have bought 3 pairs of shoes and had change left over for the price of that stupid Ben Wallace inflatable defender thing I bought last year.
I am mildly concerned that these may turn out to be manufactured in some third world country sweatshop by six year olds.
If that is true...I'm only going to wear them, like once a week, as a protest.
As far as the sneakers being made in a third world country. I can't control what a government allows workers to be paid. However, it disgusts me to hear that for Nike, a guy like Michael Jordan who makes 20 mil for his shoe contract, will make more than the 3,000 workers COMBINED, at the factory that makes his shoes. I say the players who have deals like that should TOUR those facilities. Bring a Brinks truck with you so you can do the right thing.
As far as Buckeye#1 is concerned, I read a lot of his posts at different forums and he really doesn't get under my skin. That's hard to believe since he loves his Buckeyes. Actually, a lot of the UM fans that I run across are hard to bear sometimes.............

The problem is that Steve & Barry's doesn't have an online or international sales channel. This is why the ebay vendors are able to thrive.
If the vendor doesn't provide for a demand, someone will create a supply.
It's correctable, but perhaps not desireable given the low markup @ Steve & Barry's retail sales level.
I'm ok with this because it's still undermining the big boys of the sneaker business, aka the people who have ruined high school and AAU basketball. :)
