Michigan won 27-7 against Vanderbilt. Hart was the main story rushing for 146 yards. Henne was 10-of-22 for 135 yards with two TDs. Mario Manningham and Ecker both had touchdowns.
Michigan state won 27-17 against Idaho. Stanton had a good game with 225 yards and a touchdown. Ringer had 16 carries for 70 yards with a touchdown.
Overall, both teams did pretty well (for the first game of the season)

I'll take the MSU win, but I don't think they played very well, unless Idaho is better than expected.
Looks like MSU can pretty much score at will, but the defense looked lousy to me. Lots of missed tackles.
I was fine with Smith going for the TD instead of the field goal, but I would have called a timeout.
MSU got ripped on that call where they said Trannon bobbled it. That almost turned the game around.
U of M winning...oh well. Can't have everything, I guess.

Idaho's lost lost 47 of 58 games since 2000. They have a good coach though, Dennis Erickson. He's won national championships at Miami and 40 games as an NFL coach. And Idaho may compete for the WAC championship this year.

Tyler's been a student of mine in a couple of classes. He's a terrific, intelligent, very caring young man. He's a Spanish major with a close to 4.0 gpa. A coupla summers ago he did an independent study with a colleague of mine where he just went into Detroit and started interviewing Latinos to try to get a sense of their lives, their needs, the role that culture plays in them. He came up with the idea on his own, sought out the professor to supervise his work and then carried it through. All of that would already make him stand out among the regular crowd of students, but that he's doing that amidst the year-round schedule that the football team has was pretty impressive to me.
Arriving about 10 minutes late for my class one morning in the Spring, he explained that it can be pretty hard to balance studies with the demands of the coaches. And he mentioned one assistant coach who used to give a speech in which he'd go: "remember, academics first [holding up two fingers] and athletics second [holding up one finger]."
interesting to get that perspective on the pressures of big time football.
anyway, i don't care too much about um football, but i'm real glad that he had a nice TD catch today. he's a good kid.

That's a great insider story. I can't say I'm surprised. I imagine a player would get some raised eyebrows if they asked a coach to leave practice early "to get to class."
A UConn basketball player came into my office the other day talking about how she needed "to take a class" in my department and asked me, "Are you the head of the department?" I laughed aloud because I'm just a PhD student at this point, but the student-athlete did not know what class she wanted to take and didn't seem to care. She just wanted her paperwork filled out so she could get back to the court and practice that hook shot. I always laugh when I hear the phrase "student-athlete." I'm sure many want to be students, but the NCAA and the coaching staffs won't let 'em.

yeah, some of tyler's stories were really eye-opening for me. i began to get the impression that big-time college athletics are really organized not for people like Tyler (i.e. with above average, even possibly Pro-level skills, who still want a good education and see professional sports as a kind of way station to what they really want to do with their lives after their pro careers are over -- in tyler's case teaching), but rather for those who naively "abuse" or at least exploit the system even as the system is abusing them in far more damaging ways.
i don't really have a good overview kind of perspective on the issue, and i don't think it's my place to go into more details, but listening to him i was very clearly struck by the fact that this kid was going to make good DESPITE the structures, people etc. that supposedly exist IN ORDER TO to help him to succeed in school and in sports.

Michigan looked good defensively, but that offense was inconsistent and they will have to play better than that to beat the Irish or any Big 10 team when conference play starts. There were a lot of drop passes-some to blame on the receivers and some to blame on Henne.
Carr and his offensive coordinator need to open the passing a little bit more as the only down the middle pass that I recall was the the TD to Ecker and I only recall seeing two more that were longer than 25 yards and one of those was ruled a no catch due to an error by the replay officials. thes short passes to Breaston and Hart are predicatable and the Irish defense will eat them up in a couple of weeks. 31 carries by "Mike "I never fumble" Hart seem a little much too.

Who were you talking to, me or DT? I cheer for UM and MSU. I didn't attend either school and grew up in Michigan. Like 'em both. I said I was worried about a big disappointment in South Bend because Lloyd Carr is Sub Par. He gets outcoached in big games. Tressell owns him. Well, your true colors and allegiences just came out.
I'm kinda glad U of M won. Now I don't have to listen to the whining and crying about why U of M lost. Always the same thing:
(1) The refs cheated us.
(2) The coaching sucked.
Seriously, the main thing I don't like about U of M is how they always claim how the MSU game matters nothing to them. That's a bold faced lie and we all know it. Just more of that arrogance act. When they lose they accuse MSU of cheating or claim they didn't try.
Anyhow,we all know if they played a real team like Oklahoma, Texas, Miami or USC in a bowl game or regular season game (I don't know how those teams are doing this year but you get my point) Michigan would get a butt kicking. They can mess with MSU but it's not like anyone other than OSU or U of M is any good at football in the Big Ten anyhow most years.
U of M is overrated every year. They will win a few games and maybe lose to OSU and for sure lose their bowl game. They are a top 20 team. Nothing more. Notre Dame is pretty good but it's not like Notre Dame was as good as their ranking.
LA Dre

Notre Dame did not look like a top 15 team today. Their secondary defense was suspect, the ground defense looked spotty and if not for a an interception, a conservative Prevent D staged by the coaching staff at the end of the half it could have been 34-0 at the half.
The only score they frightened Irish got in the second half was the result of three BS:bs: calls that helped them down the field and eventually into the endzone early in the 4th quarter.
Lets hope that MSU beats up the Irish nest week and puts an end to the Brady Quinn for Heisman hype:puke:

John L. must recruit speed as this Spartan team is fast. The MSU offense is so much more fun to watch than the plodding, conservative UM crap that Lloyd puts out every year.
I hope MSU can keep up its momentum this season. They have Ohio State in East Lansing this season and I'd love to see them win that one. Problem is the Spartans always seem to implode in the middle of the season. With Michigan on Oct. 7 and the Buckeyes the week after, that is tough scheduling for the Spartans. And they get so worked up for the Michigan game that I suspect a letdown against Ohio State might happen. That being said, I think the Sparties can definitely beat the Wolvies this season, but the Wolvies defense is much better this season. Stanton could be running for his life in Ann Arbor.
Would love to see MSU get worked up for more than just the Notre Dame and Michigan games every season.

MSU has to get fired up for the Michigan and Notre Dame games. Their season is usually pretty much over by the mid way point of the season. I mean, when is the last time they won the Big Ten?
But seriously, either Notre Dame was WAY over-ranked, or MSU was WAY under-ranked.
And U of M's offense may be predictable, and conservative, and run based, ball control, and all of that.. but when it is working, it is beautiful. And when it's not working, it doesn't kill them. On the other the hand, a big, high flying, run and chuck offense, creates, big exciting plays when it's working, and sloppy turnovers and exposes the weaknesses of your players when it's not.
Not to mention that no one brings up defense very often when they talk about MSU.

This isn't little league though. Not everyone gets a chance to play... you play the best players at each position.
That's like saying why doesn't coach Smith give Stanton a rest and play Clay Charles, Connor Dixon, Brian Hoyer, or John Van Dam?

Agreed with everything in your post, Dre. The fact that they still have their own freakin' national network TV deal, as well as being pretenders to any sort of real national championship contention for over a decade now, just goes to show that ND football (not just this year's team, but generally speaking, as a program) is--without exaggeration--the most overrated team in the history of sports.

But you gotta admit...there's something to 'the luck of the Irish'. First Carlson catches a pass tipped by his own guy for a 30 yard gain, then Lambert picked the ball off the MSU receivers back after it had bounced off a few people on what turned out to be the last play of the game.
Matt Trannon: I loved his TD toss to Ringer (Stanton 8 TD throws this year...Trannon has 2 so far). That was a BS unsportmanlike call on the ND sideline against him after the ND player and a coach pulled him from behind on the ND sideline when he wasn't doing anything wrong (fortunately the officials made a make-up call shorter after when they granted MSU's Ervin Williams a TD after his interception). Yeah...the weather sucked...but I'm surprised Trannon didn't get to touch the ball more than he did...for the second week in a row.
As a Spartan fan, I hope this loss isn't the season-ending fold-up game they had last year at OSU when they were dictating the game and then blew it at the end of the second quarter. JohnL has to learn that there are 60 minutes in a football game and crossover to the notion that when his team has a decent lead and are dictating the tempo, that is the time to put the nails in the coffin! PILE IT UP! Hoping not to lose, he puts the kids back on their heels thru his offensive play calling making them doubt themselves. If anyone should be pissed at JohnL, it should be the entire defensive unit after he put all of the pressure on them. Time to earn your salary JohnL...open up and make MSU the football powerhouse it once was. Poor Bubba having to watch that stupid beating after being honored...makes me sick!
On a sidenote to the broadcasting: I had to laugh at Musburger & his cohort fumbling to get ND's season-leading receiver Rhema McKnight's first name right in the first half. First they where calling him Randall and then Raymond LMAO!!!

Good post Detteam.
I agree with you on almost all of this. The whole thing sickened me but I saw it coming the entire game. I couldn't even talk about it until today it made me so ill. Such is the fate of a Sparty.
I too still like Smith , but I've got to pin this loss on him. Usually, I don't feel like that.
About the Irish luck. Yeah, they got a nice bounce on that last play, plus the deflected pass, but it should never have come to that. MSU blew it. It had very little to do with luck. MSU got breaks too.
I too figure it is going to be a season spoiler like the OSU game. Why not? It may as well be this game. It was inevitable.
OSU and U of M are going to steamroll this team. Que sera sera. :loser:

For all Weis knows it coulda been his quadruple-chin hittin him in the face.
That was a raw call on Trannon. I'd like to see the tape again. From what I recall, Trannon didn't hit anyone...he just reacted to being yanked from behind.
I'd like to see more made in the press of Weis' comment that Notre Dame 'would not lose to Michigan State again'...rather than a claimed %%%%%-slap that I don't recall seeing and apparently, video didn't see it either.

The Spartans became the first Big Ten team to lose to the Illini since 2004. Jason Reda's 39-yard field goal with 6 seconds remaining lifted Illinois to a 23-20 victory.
While the Wolverines got revenge against Minnesota winning 28-14. Henne had a nice game passing for 3 touchdowns.

State's just laying low and they're going to rise up and spank Michigan next weekend. Well, maybe not, but I don't see a blowout looming. Stanton knows this is his last chance to beat the Wolverines so I think he'll bring some focus to this one. John L. looked like a defeated man in the presser.
UM didn't look all that great to me against Minny. Offense played good the first half; defense didn't. Defense played good the second half; offense didn't. Ohio State is on a whole different level than UM, but I think UM will continue to improve.

The Sparties are going to have to dig deep to recover some self-respect after the last two games. I'll be honest...Stanton's arm was not in motion on the call that led to MSU's late TD...the defenders tackle made it look that way. On the bright side...Hoyer looked pretty good coming in cold. Stanton's got the legs...but Hoyer's got the arm.
As always...I'm looking for an epic battle for state bragging rights next Sat. It's kinda funny that State plays it's best games in the spoiler roll...and it's too bad that they can't get up for games that should be gimmies.

That was the biggest comeback in NCAA I-A History! They rallied from 35 points down in the third quarter, then Swenson kicked a game winning field goal. The Spartans snapped a four game losing streak.
Before this game, the biggest comeback was: 31 points -- when Maryland beat Miami 42-40 on Nov. 10, 1984 and when Ohio State defeated Minnesota 41-37 on Oct. 28, 1989

This game should re-open the eyes of a lot of pro scouts. I expect Stanton to have a pretty respectable pro career. Tough-as-nails, a great completion % regardless of all the dropped passes, will pull the ball in to get the 1st down on his own if no one's open, generally makes good decisions, and is a great team leader. He could have had an even better college career had John L not spent so many games playing not to lose.

The Wolverines won 17-3 over Northwestern. They gave them a scare, especially when we were thirty point favorites. Mike Hart ran for 95 yards and a touchdown. There offense wasn't clicking, but there defense made up for it. Everyone is still waiting for the No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup at Ohio State in mid November.
Michigan State looked downright awful, losing 46-21. Kellen Lewis threw five touchdown passes, including a school-record four to James Hardy, and ran for another score. Indiana scored 46 stright points after Michigan state had a 7-0 lead.

In defense of Michigan's sluggish offensive output today, the weather here was intensely crappy, they are starting their third-string tight end, and they're missing their number one big play option. there wasn't a whole lot to do besides grind it out on the ground and with short screens and that they did quite well.
watching OSU demolish Minnesota right now... man, they are potent! If both teams are undefeated when they meet, it'll be a great game, but UM defense had really better bring it.
