I was watchin the neighbor kids play ball in the driveway and the older kid showed the younger how to do an up and under move, nothing fancy just the move. It got me thinking what is the best shot/move in the game. These are examples of what I mean Timmy goin glass, Shaq’s power dunks, Nash and his floater, Ray Allen’s 3 ball. Or if you want to go a little old school Kareem’s sky hook, Jordan’s fade away, Rick Barry’s underhand free throw, or Iceman George Gervin’s finger roll. What do you guys think? Give an example or player that defines that shot/ move.

Kareem's Sky-hook. You simply cannot stop it.

Hakeem Olajuwon's Dream Shake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hakeem_Olajuwon#Dream_Shake). It's the closest thing to a dribble-less cross over I have ever seen.

A good fade away with altitude perfomed by an NBA player is practically unstoppable.

What a finesse move- I'm still doing it when I'm playing (of couse an extremely worse version, but it still works since I'm not playing against defenders like Zo) and you mentioning it makes me kind of sad that the decade of the leagues' big men in the post (Ewing, Olajuwon, Robinson, Mourning) is over.

Julius Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrving on a reverse layup!!!

Putting that reverse english on the ball off the glass is not as easy as it looks, especially when you are up in the air!!!!!!!

That's why I like Tay's little lefty hook. :) Unless his defender gets help inside, there's no stopping it.

If he could work on that shot from the right side also (yeah...that's a tall order), he'd leave his defenders scratchin their heads on what to do with him when he gets near the paint.

I disagree, that is the only inside move Tay has, and I have seen it blocked a couple of times because the defender knows whats coming.

Tay needs to come up with some other moves and mix in the baby hook.

Tay needs to come up with some other moves and mix in the baby hook. You're right. Tay has the agility to put the ball on the floor when nearing the paint more often than he does...IMO he needs to exploit that part of his talent a little more. Working to his right off-the-dribble and shooting inside would help out a lot.

I love the high shots. The high-glassers and great to watch, as are the shots when a shorter player goes up and arches one very high over a Yao Ming type.

When I still played, I loved arching the ball high so that it had the whole circle of the rim to go through, rather than ellipse such as when the lower shots were going to the rim. Besides, there is no room to block the shot when it is coming down.

In my opinon the best shot is the fade away. The shot almost can never be blocked and since it has been perfected by guy's like Jordan, D. Wade , Iverson and Kobe it is so exciting to see these guy's get the ball with the game on the line and know they are getting the ball and for the opponent to know that no matter how good of defense they play or how tall the defense player they put on them if they get the ball they are going to get that shot off and it is going to go swisssssh..........

Sweet!!!

I gotta say...Vinnie Johnson was the best I've ever seen at low trajectory shots...especially at the FT line. They went up low and flat and got sucked into the net by something that almost defies known physics.

The way he cocked the ball over his shoulder, it was like a catapult release detteam. Good call. I was thinking about VJ this morning when I caught up on this thread.

Also, his shooting percentage with that hook is not very good. He seems to miss it a lot.

My personal favorite is the black and white one-handed set shot.

Gervin's finger roll. Here's a cool little video of some of those shots. Check out the Dream Shake at 2:50.

Gervin's finger roll.

Oh yeah.

And that weird jumper of Jamaal Wilkes. And anytime Moses would just bounce it off the rim in order to get the board and the opportunity to take another shot.

And any multi-syllabic pronouncement by Mr Dawkins.

Presently I'm a big fan of Steve Nash's little scoop midway in the paint (is that called a floater?). I also like Ray Allen's perfect arc jumpshot. And I couldn't get enough of Devin Harris high off the glass shot from just under the basket in the playoffs.

It’s tough to be the midrange jumper because it can get you out of some much trouble and gives one that extra peek from the mountain top. Take that incredible dribbling exhibition by Isaiah and he got out of big trouble by hitting that mid-range jumper.

For me, it’s hard to beat quickness combined with hang-time. Even all those who are doing things behind backs and shifting hips are making room for decisions…while in the air. Jordan seemed always to have that extra push at the top and even when moving forward. The Dr. just seemed to hang as long as he wanted and those hands…like the normalcy of palming a tennis ball.
