Please leave feedback as to when you'd like to have a draft. Those who are unable to attend will need to update their ranking list so that their selections are autodrafted. Draft order will be determined randomnly prior to Draft.

I work Saturdays, but I'm on vacation the week of Oct 23rd, so I could do Saturday the 28th if needed.

Jeesh. You're not kidding. Their interface sucks. I think I will use Yahoo's first to get my ore-draft order together and then mimic it on UFC (NBA fantasy league).

I agree 100% Slippy. Mo has enough to do already. He's already given us the date and time, it should be up to use to be there or not.

P.S. You're still going to give me a call an hour before the draft to wake me up, right Mo? By the way, have you pre-ranked my players for me yet? I like to have that done (for me) well in advance so I'm totally prepared. ;)

Actually, I was thinking about drafting Big Ben (Wallce) with my first pick and releasing him right after the draft in protest.

With my second pick, I was planning on drafting Big Ben (Roethlisberger) and making him my starting C for the entire year. I won't even sub for him on days off.

That should teach Ben to mess with us Pistons fans!

Draft FAQ

Q. How do I select a player?
A. There are two ways to select a player:
1. Select the player you want to draft using the Find Player option. You can search by position and by team. Highlight that player and click on the red "Pick" button.
2. Use the Drafting Queue. This allows the owner to place several players in a list to choose from on the left. Just use the Find Player option and click on "Add to queue". There is no limit to the amount of players you can place in your draft queue. If the player or defense is selected by another owner before it's your turn to pick, he will be automatically removed from your drafting queue. If your time runs out, the 1st player listed in your queue will be selected. To select a player to draft, highlight the player in the draft queue and click on the red "Pick" button.
Q. What is "auto-pick?"
A. The auto-pick feature allows you to put your team on "auto-pilot." When auto-pick is selected and your turn comes to draft, the computer will immediately select a player for you. The computer will first look to see if you have any players placed in your draft queue. If you do, the first player listed will be selected. If no players appear in the queue, the computer will look at the pre-draft rankings of players you submitted before the draft, if any.
If you did not pre-rank players, you will be given a set of default rankings based on last season's point totals.
Q. How do I turn on/off auto-pick?
A. To turn off auto-pick or turn on auto-pick, just checkmark the box marked "Auto" that is next to the red "Pick" button. If you turn on auto-pick during your turn, it may not immediately pick for you this turn. If auto-pick is left on though, the next time it becomes your turn auto-pick will be active.
Q. Why can I only see 200 players at each position listed at a time?
A. Lists of available players and all players are very long, so the limits are to shorten the time required to list the players. When viewing a particular team or position, the limits are lifted so that all players that fit the category are shown. However, the WR and RB lists are very long, so we suggest you limit your searches to the top 200 available or search by both position and team.
Q. I can't find a player in the list I want to draft, what do I do?
A. Only players listed are available to draft. However, be aware that all players are ranked by 2003 stats by default, so rookies and those players who did not play last year, will be listed at the bottom unless you have modified their single-list rankings.
Q. I'm having problems with the draft applet, what do I do?
A. If you're having problems with the Java Live Draft applet, you can use the HTML version. You can also try closing down your browsers, and re-loading the Java applet.
Q. Why doesn't my team appear at the top of the screen?
A. The live draft applet will only display 12 teams at one time. The team currently picking appears at the far left. As picks are made, the team that picked moves off the board and all other teams slide to the left. If your team does not initially appear at the top of the page, it will appear as soon as enough picks are made to put you within the next 12 picks.
Q. Why do teams keep moving at the top of the draft page?
A. The team currently picking appears at the far left. As picks are made, the team that picked moves off the board and all other teams slide to the left. Q. What are the 3 letters that appear on each basketball on the draft page?
A. That is the team abbreviation for each team name in your league.

J/k. James is yesterday's news. Give me Maxiell any day.

Seriously, the truth is that I'm considering a high-risk roster (which means I've basically lost already). And that's all I have to say about that.

ps. where is the chat on NBA.com?

ps. where is the chat on NBA.com?

It is initiated once the draft begins and it is terribly slow so be forwarned.

Speaking of which...

Couple of notes before the draft:

I did a draft yesterday and the interface is horribly slow and not very intuitive as compared to Yahoo. Expect some time to adjust to the interface, it doesn't appear to be too user-friendly
Get there ahead of time and make sure that you have the latest Java runtime installed just in case you run into any problems. Firefox works well as an alternate browser.
You might want to have another window up to compare player stats as it is hard to maneuver through the java menus. Be prepared in advance. There is an option to put players in a queue which is good to have in case you run into technical difficulties
If you fail to make a pick two times in a row your status will change to auto-pick. This can be turned on or off on the main draft screen. If you suspect you are having a problem, let me know and I'll correct it for you quickly.
The main draft page constantly refreshes during the draft. This can be annoying for some. You can stop this by pressing the pause button at the top right corner of the main draft page.
If you want to see a big view of who everyone has picked during the draft. Go to the league page and click on the League Rosters tabTo be honest, I'm not very impressed with NBA.com's live draft utility but if we walk in expecting that it will be less than glorious we are more likely to enjoy the experience.

Take care and I look forward to seeing all of you tonight.

Happy Drafting!

Question for those of you who have been in more than one fantasy league of the same sport in the same season.

When you draft, do you try to go with a different strategy for your other teams or at least draft different players (in case of injury, etc)?

I'm not sure what philosophy to use. What has worked for you guys? As it is, I plan to draft pretty much the same for both of my teams. Is this wise or foolhardy?

I'm assuming under the same rules too.

In an online draft your plan should be affected by the other managers picks, thus making every draft at least slightly different by definition. Draft selection order should play a part in your strategy as well. So I guess what I am trying to say is going in with the same general plan is good, just be prepared to alter it based on opportunity.

I agree. Draft position and what the other managers are doing around you really affects how your team is going to be set up. If you have the #1 pick then your strategy would be different than than the team that has the #12 pick. If there is a run on Point Guards early in the draft then you would have to get one earlier than planned or end up with 3rd tier PG's on your roster as starters.

Last season, I was in two different leagues where I missed the draft on one and the other was automated. In each case I had to use the hand the hand that was dealt to me and manipulated the squad through free agency the rest of the year.

I think consumated one trade in the advance league last year dumping Starbury, but at this point cannot recall who i got for him if that player survived the season before I dumped him.

jammertime

I use the info gained from the first draft (where players are taken) as a guide for my 2nd draft.

I try to avoid drafting too many of the same player in both leagues because of the injury factor.

As far as strategy, I let the draft dictate that. I do my prep work so I have an idea of what I want to do, but that can change really quickly during the draft.

I LOVE doing live drafts! Its a lot of fun. Especially when you know the other players, so you can do some trash talking during the draft.
