Well, draft night was not without its surpises. Technical difficulties made the early rounds look like a keystone cops episode. The most stunning pick was DLEV "Dumars" 59's selection of the mercurial Shaun Livingston. I swear I heard "the Sleeper has awakened!" but that could have just been a serendipitous Dune sneaking through the thin walls of my apartment. Said Dumars on his pick: "When youre drafting as high as we were, you want to look for a player that has Destroyers DNA." Destroyers DNA is right. Talk about laying the blueprint for the destruction of your chances to field a contending team. Technical difficulties? A supremely optimistic cousin? The group rolled on.

My first pick at #9 was a total homer of a pick named Chris Paul. He'll do pretty good if he doesn't break down mid season. Honestly, I had Nash first but Paul's games come on local TV. Basement....here we come! oh Dlev's got that room reserved. Maybe the garage then.

Best value picks: Caron Butler falling to me at the position he did. His numbers were underwhelming while the wizards experimented with him as a 6th man but he more than made up for that when the staff came to their senses. His starter numbers come closer to Jamison. Stephon Marbury was a guy I couldn't pass despite needing a C like a man afflicted with scurvy. Its Isiahs buttcheek on the chopping block and it begins and ends with Marbury. I reading uptempo. Will Starbury return to 20/8 form?

Worst value picks: David West. I was looking to shore up my bigs and get some decent rebounding into the mix. I had West on my sheet a round higher so he's a guy I wanted but it may turn out to be one of the worst moves I made. Marvin Williams. I don't know what this guy will do for my team. An interesting value opportunity but maybe I should have looked to a specialist to shore up 3ptrs or blks.

Make or break pick: Josh Smith apparently. I'm not on the JSmoove bandwagon but where he was...mid 3rd round, it was worth the risk. Now payoff buster!

Outlook: I drafted the prototypical Donut team despite designs to fill my C early. Roscoe did the Sheed Shuffle with his #1 pick and go allen and then went back and got Yao despite saying he wanted Bosh. Tricky guy that one. I think my 1st six are solid but my last six...its all upside and potential. I picked up 2 rookies. I think I'll struggle for a good part of the season.

anyone else want to write about thier results? I'm interested in hearing your take on your teams.

Linwood basically drafted every guy I wanted, so I'll be cheering him on this season.

No, I didn't get a Dream Team, but my outlook isn't as severe as Micro's. I would say I have a good little team, complete with loads of "upside." Members of the Upside Elite include: Rudy Gay, Sheldon Williams, and DAAAAAAARRRRRKKKKKOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Drafting Shaquille in a post-championship year goes against every draft philosophy I like to abide by. But the way things were going, I thought it worth a shot.

Taking Kobe in with the eighth pick was somewhat unexpected. I tend to want a bigger player as my first pick, preferably E. Brand. That guy was awesome for me last year. I just missed on Brand. So I'll take Kobe. I mean hey, what other player can get you 81 points in a single game?

Drafting Vladimir Radmanovic was completely a technical accident. Maybe I should keep him for his three ball ability? Maybe. But if there's interest in him, I'll be listening.

I was probably a little too excited to take Barbosa with my last pick. No, Griff, you were justified. I mean, Nash is likely to get some sort of prolonged injury this year, right?

As the draft drew close, I found myself with a full plate. The day started with an extra day of work. Usually, I have Friday off, so I had planned to sit around all day and read the fantasy articles, compile my lists, and consult with the hallway coach. Instead, I had to work so I would only have an hour or so to prepare.

I spent the first part of that time walking the dog. I spent the second part walking Hallway Coach through "computer 101." Then I realized that none of my passwords or addresses were saved on my new computer, so I frantically plugged in and started up the old machine... :gaah:

Eventually, it all got sorted out and the draft began. Hallway Coach and I had decided weeks ago to take Brizzle, for obvious reasons.

Our next pick would come in the late second round. We knew Elton Brand would be gone, so we took a big gamble on Amare Stoudamire. If he goes down again, we are in trouble. If he is healthy and plays 70% as well as he did last time he was playing, we will do well. We took Ben Wallace with the next pick. We both feel that Ben is a proud man and will be EARNING that 15 mil. I expect Gramps Wallace to block shots and grab boards at a rate that will get him another DPOY. The FT% will suck of course, but we may get a steal or two out of him to make up for it.

The Pistons: Rip Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince.
I think Rip is undervalued. I had him on my fantasy team last year, and he kept my team in semi-contention. He gives you 20 points, has good %, and plays every game.
I think Tayshaun breaks out this year. I expect 18 points and 8 rebounds from him. And he will play every game.

I took E.T. at point, because I liked him last year, and I think he was best available. Bonzi Wells could be a numba 1 stunna over in Sactown.
Chandler for boards and blocks.

Three rookies: Roy, Morrison, and Bargnini. Because I am, and will always be, an optimist.

Once again, I picked players that I would like to have on a team, instead of well rounded stat guys. Hope I can make it work.

If this was a real team, they would dunk on your head and grab every board!

Dissapointments of the draft: No Brand, Artest, or Noccioni for the Allstars.

Darth Tater
10-21-2006, 01:32 PM
Slippy and I did a mock draft. I predicted Dlev would grab Darko in the first round but he surprised me even more and took Shaun Livingston. I thought it was a computer glitch, at first.

Linwood taking Ben Wallace was no surprise either. I figured Roscoe wouldn't get anywhere near Artest, but I see he is now looking to dismantle his team by attempting to trade for him for the second consecutive year. LOL.

My bonehead move was not planning beyond the 5th round. I picked up Bogut in round 6 to fill a spot, but later remembered he was injured. I like him though. I got all players I like so I'm happy. The system ticked me off because it was slow and also didn't list most players' ability to play more than one spot, so I wasn't sure on some.

I wanted a Piston this year. I planned on getting Prince a bit early, but Linwood beat me to it. Nazr was available when I needed a Center so I took him. Later, I saw Dice on the board so I grabbed him too. Now I have an extra Piston.

Griffin beat me to the punch twice. Once when I was going to draft R.Bell, he grabbed him. So I took Szerbiak, who I like if he stays healthy. He also nailed Darko a pick before I could (I believe thats when I grabbed Nazr).

My strategy was to go point guard heavy. Forget the defensive categories. I was thrilled I got Arenas at #6. That's where he was projected and I figured he should be there since everyone but me seems to hate him. Next I reached a bit for Bibby (since Billups was gone). Then I took one of my favorites Carmelo. Why oh why didn't the Stones draft him?

Then I got Okur whose game I love. I was thrilled I was able to get Andre Miller in the 5th round and considered reaching for him in the 3rd.

I should be strong in assists, threes, points, and steals.

I wanted Nocionni and was glad to get him. I got Gomes too.

Slippy convinced me to grab D. Williams. I think Deng was a value in the 13th round. (Hey, last year I got Kaman there). I wasn't going to get Deng but I needed a shooting guard.

When are the free agents available? We can't do anything for a couple of days, right?

Anyhow, I got the first four guys I wanted to build my squad around. All players I really like.

I figure the Taters should be competitive this year (in the middle of the pack), although it seems any fantasy team I've ever had, despite my efforts was either at the very top or a bottom dweller. I have yet to see mediocrity.

It's pretty much concensus that the NBA fantasy site sucks right? Have you guys tried looking for players? I can't figure out how to propose a trade yet...

There are so many guys who are dual position eligible that you can build an all-small or all-big team which may or may not be cool depending on how you look at it.

That's frikkin embarassing for the NBA. Yahoo last year was much better. Yahoo this year will blow you away. It is much, much slicker...

Oh, what the hell..

So draft time is approaching and I have a distinct plan in mind. My plan is to field a team that I will enjoy watching. So this year I was looking to bring the offense! Picking 5th I knew that I was pretty much guaranteed to pick a top tier player. Dirk was on my list at 5 and he was exactly who I landed. Feeling good at this point.

The next series of picks were shockers in my opinion. On my draft list, I predicted selecting Michael Redd with my second pick. Watching Chris Bosh go late, Shaun Livingston go first round, Chris Paul go really early..and Camby get selected early second round...I was amazed to see Allen Iverson land in my lap. I grabbed him with open arms as it fell into my gameplan of offensively charged and entertaining. It got better though. I got my draft board second round pick as my third round pick. Michael Redd baby! It becomes obvious to me now with Redd and Dirk on my team that I need to make a run at some three point shooters. I grab Peja with my 4th pic. A steal in my opinion as I believe his career will be rejuvenated in New Orleans. Just two years ago he was a top 5 fantasy stud.

I thought this might be the steal of the draft for me.

Nope, with my 5th pick I select Raymod Felton. Some draft boards had him as a bottom 2nd round pick. He was awesome last year at the end of the season.

At this point I'm wanting to grab Miller or TJ Ford off the charts as I'm thinking I could really put an exclamation point to my point guard combo. I decide I can't take the risk of not getting a big man so I take a deep breath as I see big men getting gobbled up and get my guy, Carlos Boozer. Gotta love his center/forward status and high field goal pct. I cross my fingers and with the 7th pick I get my guard, TJ Ford. I'm thinking to myself if Micro was not in Auto draft mode he would have surely beaten me too the punch. Whewwww!

Noticing that I still need rebounds, I marvel to see Troy Murphy still on the board. I've had my eye on him all preseason as I know he will benefit strongly from Don Nelson's style of play he is introducing to Golden St.

At this point I'm feeling pretty good about my rebounding situation so I decide to take the best player available, 3 point bomber Kyle Korver. He is one of the most underated players in fantasy b-ball. Don't look now but now I have Redd, Dirk, Peja and Korver on my team. Damn!!! That's lethal. No way I'm losing from the three point line this year.

Next I select Gooden and Curry. I'm feeling good about these selections as both players have been having a stellar preseason. Curry in particular has been playing some of his best ball in a long time under Thomas. ...and I grab them in the late rounds. Excellent.

I finish off with D. Stoudamire (another 3 point terror), Haywood (Starting center with solid FG%) and Kevin Martin out of Sactown (Anyone who followed him last year knows that he was an absolute beast last year with superior field goal pct and periodic scoring outburts).

Overall, I absolutely love my team. If given an opportuntity to improve things, I don't think I would do anything differently. Now, I just need to cross my fingers and hope for a healthy season. :)

You click on your team. Then after that above it, there are links to add players, trade, etc.

We should go to yahoo and have the commissioners just hand plug in all of our picks. Then we keep our teams, but get off the crappy nba site.

Let me just say that NBA.com blows. I shake my fists at David "Weasel" Stern. As much money as the NBA makes they could provide a superior fantasy product. The crap that we had to go through is down right insane. Trying to figuire who was still on the board and who was just taken and then the darn screen keep freezing up.

Well I did well the first 4 rounds or so but then the wheel's started falling of as the 2 players I had in the que ready to go went off the board and i scrambled to find a repalcement. That led to the 5th round blunder of taking an injured Pau Gasol. I totally forgot he went down with a knee injury this summer. Then after that blunder there was a run on Point Guards and I snatched Tony Parker. He was the only guy left. Then again in I believe in the 10 th round I made my third mistake I was salivating at the chance to land Raji Bell only to have him go off the board the pick before me. I mistakingly saw a Bell still on the list and grabed Charlie Bell instead. Bell is a fine player but I would not have taken him that high.

Well after all that I still think my team is a force to be reckoned with. I went Big and I went often.

Elton Brand 1st round
Ray Allen 2nd round
Tracey McGrady 3rd round
Boris Diaw 4th round
Paul Gasol 5th round
Corey Maggette
Tony Parker
Nenad Kristic
Jeff Foster
Udonis Hasslem
Raef LaFrentz
Maurice Williams

We should go to yahoo and have the commissioners just hand plug in all of our picks. Then we keep our teams, but get off the crappy nba site.
That's a lot of work for motown and I.

I'm just saying it's surprising that Stats.com sells this type of fantasy experience for $20 when its not as good as free at Yahoo.

We're going to stick it out and struggle with it. That was the original plan.

I admit it sucks. NBA.com was plan B to plan A which was the CBSSportsline fantasy b-ball offering. I dedicated an entire season to working out the kinks with CBS just to have to ditch them because they decided to get rid of the FREE version. So I had to scramble to come up with a replacement. ..and that is the bumbling piece of crap we've come to know as the NBA.com fantasyball page. lol. It's their first year and it shows!

On the plus side.....there are still alot of cool features that are available once the season starts and we get a little more comfortable. Let's laugh at the shortcomings, compile a lists of the problems to submit to NBA.com and try to have alot of fun along the way. :) Or at least as much fun as possible with the knowledge that I will wiping the floor with all of you this season. ;)

Yes it is alot of work. Went through that process last year after buying Fox Sports crap about a superior fantasy football experience. Half the time we could not log in to our teams. When we were able to trades and waiver wire moves had been undone or the teams were not the same as drafted. Also the live scoring was malfunctioning and locked us from adjusting our line ups 3 days before Sunday's Game day of week one. I emailed the support help desk and all they could do is say sorry bare with us we are having difficulties. I clicked on the blog and saw like 2500 postings from people having the same problems and they were not as nice as me about it. It was a pure headache. I ended going back to Yahoo and up loading everyones team in manually. It was like a 5 hour job. I would not wish that on anyone. I learned my lesson. Love the one your with. LOL!!! Yahoo for 4 LIFE.:)

Having the 11th and 14th picks in the draft I predicted that I might be able to land Bosh and Nash - which I did. I was a bit bummed having 2 picks so close together because I miss out on big chunks of the draft at a time.
ie. solid big man wave in the 40-50 range

It also left me little time to figure out who to select with my 2nd line of picks with only 3 picks between including an auto-drafting micro.

I ended up taking a few guys with upside. Looking purely at last years stats my team looks weak in some areas, but if my 'upside' picks such as Nelson, Granger and Claxton work out like I hope, I should be able to compete.

But all draft I just felt like I could never get the guy I wanted from the position I wanted, the way the picks fell for me were just out of sync. When I wanted a PG there were only quality bigs in that range, and when I wanted a big, there were only PG/SG's so to select the position I wanted would have meant I would have had to stretch for guys. In the end I just took the best available player more often than not.

Hopefully I will get the draft order I want in the 'big game' Advanced, but I'm still confident of competing well in Trial.

Motown's crew looks ominous, worthy of Rick Kamla himself. Also props to Tater and Slippy's squads.

Ok, I admit leaving someone in charge of my draft picks was a huge mistake. Shawn Livingston is nice, but it will be a few years perhaps before he is a 1st round pick!

However, don`t for a minute think that the Destroyers are finished before the seasons starts. I will go on record right now and say someone will want a Destroyer or two before the season ends and I will just smile!

A front line of Camby, Jermaine O Neal, and Ron Ron is not that bad (if the injury Gods are nice) not to mention Ariza and K-Mart might have something to prove this year.

Q-Richardson, Juan Dixon and Fat a.. Antoine Walker shooting 3`s is not too shabby. I also added Okafur, Stevie Franchise, and Manu Ginobili to the mix.

Brevin Knight should as usual be in the top 5 in the league in APG. So, you can laugh now, but prepare to be destroyed later.

Yeah Jammer, your squad looks fine to me. I got you in the first week and already I have matchup problems. Your guards and SF's do a bit of everything (Kidd, Carter, R.Davis, Iguodala).
Smush Parker is your worst rebounder at 3.3 and everyone else is over 4 RPG! Not to mention all your guards avg at least half a block!
Your TO's, FG% and FT% are all very impressive.
The only difference I see between our squads is I have a couple more guys who are set to raise their games this season, but if they don't I could be screwed. They will need to step up from week 1.

Dlev ,I wanted Brevin as a late round pickup and just as I had him in the que to pick, you grabbed him a couple of picks ahead of me. That pretty much was the way it played out all night. After I my first three pics of Wade, Duncan and Joe Johnson, someone always grabbed my next choice 1 to 3 picks ahead of me. :(

When I went after Kamen, Jammer grabbed him right before I, and I had to scramble to find another big man and the clock ran out on me and some how or another Villanueva was chosen. He must have been at the top of my que.

Even when I decided to target Tay for my small forward, some body grabbed him and I had to settle for what I hope will be a sleeper in Grant Hill.

The reverse order of the draft through a curve ball as you had to wait sometime 24 picks before you got to select again. I guess everybody had to go through that, but your back to back picks really helped you I think.

At one point my computer frozed in the 4th round but luckily I had my laptop open too. I am thinking of just turning the auto pick tonight in the advance league just to avoid the headache and frustration

You could always pre-rank your own list, or set more guys in the waiting queue. Say you want a PG for your next pick, just put 5 PG's in there and you are bound to get one of them.

I know I didn't use the queue as much as I should have and got timed out once, luckily my pre-draft list saved me and I got the guy I wanted anyway.

A couple of related announcements:

(1).I learned last night that the initial list of players who were not drafted and have cleared waivers are now available as free agents. So go adjust your rosters.

(2) They cleared waivers at midnight last night EST. I know this because it shows the time some waiver claims went through and I went there shortly after midnight last night (I'm on mountain time so it's earlier here).

This is nicer than yahoos method because Yahoo makes you wait until after midnight Pacific time to see if your waiver went through or to wait for a player to clear. (I'm not sure if Motown set this but I like...I like!!!)

This means any trades we make should also be cleared by midnight est. Of course, all waivers need to wait two full days after the initial day a person is placed there before being cleared.

Hope this wasn't too confusing.

Motown could have gotten the steal of the century with Smith. On an already dangerous team, he is going to be tough to keep down.

I ran into that too Webz. There IS a way to see the other teams position though. When you go into the screen where you are able to change your lineup there is a drop down list that allows you to change to other teams. When you do that, you will see a more detailed breakdown of the opposing squad. (this includes stats, position, avg., etc...)

I'm not seeing that. I go to my team, then click the drop down to view another team and it just shows that teams players with their weekly game schedule.

Hopefully its not just a commish thing.

Here's what I do:

From the League Home page I click on my team name
Then I click on the "View another team's lineup: " drop down menu and select the team I'm interested in
At this point the team members show their positons underneath their name (ie. PG, SG, G, GF, F, SF, PF, FC, C)
Then I click on the "2005-06" link in the "Schedule" section under the "View another team's lineup" drop down menu
Now I am able to see the players positions and all of their stats from the previous yearLet me know if this helps.

hmm, thats weird. those links are there when i view my own team, but as soon as i go to someone else's team they disappear. even if i select 2005-06 stats under my own team first, then click someone elses team it just reverts back to their lineup for the week.

Did more research for you on that position eligibility thingie...

NBA.com sucks in regards to evaluating other teams for trades. There is no easy way to see all the stats/info you need for an opposing team. The only way to do it is to track the names of the players you want to review. Go to Add free agents. Click on "Click Here to view all players" located to the right of the Player "Search by Last Name" box. Then enter the player you want to see in the "Search by Last Name" box. Not very intuitive but it accomplishes what you've asked for.

Read the rest of it. Its says:
Oct 29 Swift will miss the entire regular season after tearing the ACL in his right knee. This preseason, Swift played in seven games. His numbers weren't staggering -- 3.0 points and 4.6 rebounds -- but he outplayed fellow young center Johan Petro and won the starting job.
Advice: Swift was injured early in Wednesday night's exhibition game against Sacramento. He left the arena on crutches and underwent an MRI exam on Thursday. Additional testing by team physicians Friday morning confirmed the injury. The Sonics lost Swift only 1:17 into the game against Sacramento when he went out of bounds awkwardly in front of Seattle's bench. He was taken immediately to the locker room and did not return.

And so it begins.

I read those same reports. I decided to dig deeper and looked at his preseason performances. Based on those preseason game stats I decided to pass on Amare. He is obviously not comfortable on the court and has no lift to get boards. Those games told the tale. Poor shooting, no rebounds and limited mins. I think one game he only scored like 1 point in like 20mins of playing time. NOT GOOD!!!

Hey Mo, it looks like I won the "Trial League" after all. Just got an email saying that I have 13 wins....two more than second place.
:dancingparty::king::nerner::dance:

:first::first::first::party2:

Congrats to me. I am glorious.

LMAO!

Yeah, looks like NBA.com still doesn't have a way to delete/remove leagues. Pretty sad. Pretty sad.

Come on fellas/ladies

Aldridge was out there for the taking for at least 3 days before I picked him up. I might win this league by 30 games. :pound:

I thought about picking him up but I decided to pass. Seems like they are going to be shuffling the line up quite a bit in Jailblazer land.

I've watched him a couple nights now. He will definitely be seeing big playing time. The rest of the centers (Maglorie, Billa and whoever else they got) look like a steamy pile.

I've put some guys on the trading block. Not because I want to get rid of them, but because I have too many players from the same teams.
I have 2 guys each from Phoenix, Toronto, Seattle, Indiana, and Orlando.
My schedule is screwed this week as there are 2 nights where all 5 teams are playing and too many guys are wasted on the bench due to no free slots.
So anyone feel free to make me a reasonable offer on my guys from the teams above.

I just received an e-mail for nbafanstasy@stats.com that my team there is tied for first place with Auroras Insurgents. So in the words David (Matthew Broderick) in WarGames '"the computer is still playing the game"

Of course in the new Open league I just went through a week with 4 injured players, so Webz if you want to take a chance on one of my injured players in hopes that thay will be ready to play in 10 days, I might consider taking one of your Supersonic players off your hands.

hmm, getting a few offers for my sonics guys. not really looking to trade them as much as the other teams on my list.

dre, i've already got enough injury concerns. i'm not ready to tank the season just yet. :gettinghanged:

Double whammy this week!

I get to smash Winless in two different leagues this week.

Can it get any better than this? :)

You might just smash the Open League team. They are not as sound as the Advanced League team.

I love this Dre! Especially because I am having less than optimum results in all of my Leagues where I am playing instead of the computer. :pound:

Perhaps the abandoned NBA.com game should be considered the real "Trial League", determining whether computers are really better over time because of consistency and eliminating human error. If I do better with the runaway computer than in my other 3 leagues, well that would be quite an indictment of my fantasy basketball skills!

Oh yeah, I love that War Games movie. I've seen it at least ten times.

Joshua (the computer) to David, the teenager: Let's Play a Game.
David: Ok. What should we play?
Joshua:
A. Checkers
B. Chess
C. Global Thermonuclear War
David: Let's play Global Thermonuclear War.

Kim, I am doing better there too than my other two teams where there is "human intervention" on my part. (bad GM)

I know I had set line-ups 4 weeks in advance, but yet the system was so inconsistent, it was actually changing the lineups itself and throwing guys to the bench.. no wonder we abandoned it.

So if Joshua wants to continue to play the game and decide who sit and plays the game then I will let him and suffer or enjoy the consequences:typing:

Rudy Gay and Mike James are on the block. I'm looking to do a 2 fer 1, and I'm not asking for a lot.

I need a multi-position player, preferably a G/F. Not looking for a star, perhaps a 6th man or a solid starter playing as the third scoring option.

I'll consider an injured star if you want to get out from under that as well. But the injury can't be for more than 3 weeks.

Anyone interested in JRich or SJax?

Mike James is a freakin joke. Damn autodraft.

I'm interested in JRich. If "really beat up" is Canadian for win-oneor-two catagories-so-as-not-to-get-embarrassed' (not sure how many s's and r's to use there, so I'll just double up) then I agree with you.

That hat ain't going to save you this week, my friend.

For JRich, I'm looking for a PG or F/C with some pedigree.

Do you want to trade JRich for Pau Gasol? I was just reading he should be back in 2 weeks ahead of schedule from his foot injury.

That's an interesting deal. I already have Warrick however and a dinged up David West eating a roster spot.

Does Pau have dual eligibility?

I hate that there is no IR in basketball. It's stupid.

You might need to sweeten that pot. I can throw in a throw away...

Oh man, that's what Bob and Doug McKenzie were talkin' about!

We'll, the only PG with pedigree I have is Sam Casell. I like that guy though. For F and C, I have Ben Wallace and Tyson Chandler. I'll have to light my Aurbach Cigar and think about this one.

Make sure your offer includes a box of those cigars. Ben is having a good night tonight, but neither of those guys is a top 50 talent.

I'm going to check back on this tomorrow. I need some sleep.

So it looks like we're even in our season series. Now what do you have to say for yourself?
