Previously, three things could happen on such a play: the offensive player could be called for a charging foul, the defensive player could be called for a blocking foul, or the referee could allow play to continue.
This season, the latter option more often will be called as a defensive foul if the referee believes the defender "flopped," that is, fell without legitimate contact.

I think it will take some getting used to, but its ultimatly a good thing for the game.
Its crazy the way some of these guys go to the ground at the mere thought of contact.
I can't see guys guarding Shaq getting called for too many dives though. When he hits you, its for real.

Is it just me or is this the anti-superstar call? Or are those ghost calls that will persist, flop or not?
It's going to take a brave referee to call this on some of the game's biggest faces.
I still say that the best flops I ever saw were Worm in the 1990 ECF. You never saw a guy launch himself backwards like that before (to my recollection).

yeah, I seem to remember him overperforming "the flop" a tad earlier in his career and not getting the calls. Hard to believe that John Stockton had the ability to commit a charge with enough force to push him out of bounds into the cheap seats. :)

Yeah, I doubt we will see it called very frequently.

I think that the flop is one of the worst parts about basketball. A lot of people who don't like the NBA will mention it.
In order to fix it, I think that you have to allow the defender to have more contact with the offensive player. If you can't flop against Shaq, you better be able to put some weight against him without the refs calling a foul on you. Players flop because it is the only way that they are going to get the benefit of the call. If they don't fall on their back, the foul will be called on them.
And they better have a ref's meeting about Shaq's patented elbow to the defender's face swim move. That is ugly.

I think I hate superstar calls more than anything else.

Worm COULD jump...either vertical or horizontal! The way he used to go skidding many feet on his arse always made it look like he was hit by a truck. In fact...I have to rate him as far better than Ginobli.
