Cleveland will pay his salary this season

St. Francis - On National Basketball Association draft night, while everyone was waiting for the Milwaukee Bucks to pluck Andrew Bogut with the No. 1 overall pick, Bucks general manager Larry Harris made a largely unnoticed move.

Harris sent a second-round draft choice to the Cleveland Cavaliers for shooting guard Jiri Welsch, a 25-year-old native of the Czech Republic. What made the deal even better from the Bucks' perspective is that the Cavaliers, wanting to free up salary cap space, agreed to pay Welsch's entire $2.2 million salary for the 2005-'06 season.

Wow. I didn't realize they were paying his entire salary! That's crazy. I've never heard of a team in any sport trading a guy and then picking up the entire tab. :confused:

I'd rather have Welsch than Eric Snow... especially at his salary.

Apparently the Cavs felt they needed an outside shooter like Damon Jones more than Weslch's floor game.
