I just wanted to post a quick comment about the Raps vs Hawks game tonight, but for the life of me, couldn't find a relevant thread to put it in!
So I just started this one (Mods: If there is somewhere better to put this post, please feel free to move it).
Anyway, this was a very good game to watch. Both teams look very solid. Johnson and Smith for ATL look unstoppable and T.O. has some really solid depth.
Both of these teams could challenge for playoff spots this season.

I caught the end of the game too Jammer.
Atlanta is amazingly good. They seem so confident right now. I think they, not the Cavs could be the power in the East over the next 3 seasons....
And thanks for starting a thread. It's one of a million things we never got around to this summer!

They seem so confident right now.
I thought that myself watching the game. They had a swagger about them.
Another thing I was thinking while watching the game was that although T.O. doesn't really have a "Starting 5" per se, they have a bunch of guys who can just come in and contribute with very little drop off from the "starters". They actually kind of remind me of the Alternatorz. Led by a fiesty, high energy PG in Calderon playing the role of Jon Barry.
Both thoughts had me longing for the good old days of a couple of seasons ago!

I'm a Fred Jones fan. I think that Raptors second unit of Jones, Calderon, Graham etc is very decent. Probably as good if not better than Hunter, Murray, and Delfino.

Andrew Bynum is off to a nice start this season for the Lakers.
(Ok, that was weak. I really just wanted to post this crazy video that I just found, but its from last year, so I had to make it 2006-2007 related for this thread :sssh:.)
Check out this video! I've watched it 10 times now.
I had never seen this before. Its from last season. Shaq vs. Bynum. First Shaq gets his, then Bynum gets him back and then they get into it and KOBE BRYANT of all people comes to play peacemaker.

Yeah he did. But I love Bynum's reaction. The kid gets up, runs down the court, calls for the ball, gives Shaq a Shake-n-Bake slam then hops back down the court like a kid on Christmas, stares Shaq down and then bounces into him like he's in a mosh pit.
Priceless! :pound:

Very true. The average kid would have been severely deflated. Good for Bynum. Makes me wish he was on my team now.

Reminds you of the 2004-05 Suns and 2005-06 Pistons...great starts ...unsatisfied finishes in the end.
Jazz have at least 6 come from behind wins where they were down double digit points. When you start to believe you are going to win, then the home games become automatic wins. Just think the Pistons were that close to beating thenm a couple of weeks ago if not for a bad start and a few questionable calls in the end.
Barring injury, the Jazz can probably get 55+wins.

Well, just one night after the bizarre occurrence of Ben Wallace grabbing zero rebounds in 20 minutes, we get Stephon Marbury playing 19 minutes and taking ZERO SHOTS--not a single attempt, either from the field or from the line! Now that's not something we're likely to see again. I'm pretty confident in guessing that he's never played a single game in his entire life without scoring any points, and here he went further by not even attempting a single shot.
Bulls-Knicks tonight was a very weird game, from what little I saw of it. The Bulls were killing them most of the way through, as the Knicks turned it over 26 (!) times, but they somehow mounted a big comeback and had a possession where they were only down 5 in the last two minutes, at which point...they turned it over. Bulls went on to win 106-95, snapping their 6-game losing streak and wrapping up their grueling 7-game road trip. 8 of their next 9 games are at home, so we'll have a better idea of whether they can right the ship or not after they finish that long home stand.

Not sure what happened. The Sonics don't really play D, and Earl is no exception.
Maybe the right system or coach could restore him to his former glory. If his former glory is defense, I'm not sure Flip would be the coach to do that.

"Meanwhile, the Sonics are contemplating trading Watson, who earlier this season said it might be better if he plays elsewhere because he is not suited to play 15 or 20 minutes a night on an inconsistent basis.
Watson is shooting a career-low 29.7 percent from the field and 24.4 percent from 3-point range, and he has been highly critical of Hill."
Or not.

The Heat got an annoying victory tonight at the buzzer in Memphis. They overcame two cold-blooded 3s by Chucky Atkins in the last two minutes, as Posey hit an insanely lucky turnaround 3 off an inbounds with 1.8 seconds left for a 1-point win. Similar to the Pistons game the other night, Wade had a couple of chances to hit a go-ahead shot in the last minute, but he couldn't connect on them.
Actually, the Heat did deserve some luck right at the end, since they were (very unusually, as we all know) completely screwed by two HORRIBLE calls in the last 30 seconds. Udonis was called for a block on what was very clearly a charge, and then Dorrell Wright was called for a preposterously ticky-tack foul on the perimeter. We all would have been screaming bloody murder if either of those calls had gone against the Pistons in the final seconds of a close game.

I went to a Sonics game tonight. I sat really close to the court and got a good look at the action. Ray Allen is injured, so Earl Watson recieved extended minutes. I take back everything I said about Earl. He plays extremely aggressive defense, sometimes a litte too much, but I would much rather see too much effort than not enough. He shot the ball well, found the open man, and is very fast. He makes some bad decisions here and there, but I don't think it's so bad that a little time and coaching effort couldn't correct it.

Just a heads-up for Laker watchers: they've had a really nice season so far, at 14-6, but 15 of their first 20 games have been at home, and at least one of those road games was "at" the Clippers. And now they have 8 of their next 10 on the road, including a 6-game trip to the midwest and east coast.

Mikki Moore just had a two handed putback slam. All kinds of high fiving, and finger twisting arm waving and players jumping into each other jumping.
Pretty funny to watch. He's put on some weight from when he was a Piston.
Fascinating game between Phoenix and Golden State last night. Suns jumped out on them in the first and just ran away - dunks, threes, blocks, steals, the whole package. First a 16-2 run, then a 14-8, then an 11-2 - amazing.
Then Nellie pulled the Wars back into a zone and Phoenix was completely stymied. GS goes 30-7, then 28-13, then 7-0 to take the lead in the third. 65-13 overall.
The Suns eventually came back, and barely edged out a win, but if you don't think that the zone is here to stay, you're just not paying attention.

Right now, Phil is the coach of the year (at least in California). Yeah they have played most of their games at Staples, but even when they appear to be heading for a loss, they have come back to either win or take the game in OT before losuing and made the fans here in LA all but forget about the underachieving Clippers.
Their role/bench players come through when needed. Luke Walton, Brian Cook, Jordan Farmar, Sasha V, kwame Brown a young Andrew Bynum & Mo Evans? Other than the latter, I don't think Flip would give any of these guys more than 5 mins if they were sitting on the Piston Bench... Flips plays them and Kobe trusts these guys, where in the past two seasons he didn't.
They were down to the Rockets Friday night by 17 only to come back and win on D-OT, and tonight again down 17 to the Wizards before eventually falling in OT.
It will be tough for the Lakers to keep up this momentum on the six game road trip without Lamar Odom, but who knows as the Bulls and the Magic are the only two teams they will play with a record above .500.
They have depth playing 11-12 players a night, but their defense is their liability

Didn't see these games, but two of the craziest second halves I can ever remember hearing about took place tonight:
-- Lakers were playing at Minnesota, and at halftime, the Lakers were up 2. Wolves outscored them 30-18 in the 3rd to take a 10 pt lead into the 4th. But then the Lakers outscored them 34-7 in the 4th to win by 27 points!
And that was positively normal compared to...
-- Utah was playing at Atlanta, and the Hawks were up 1 at halftime. Then Atlanta blew the Jazz away in the 3rd, 39-19, to extend their lead to 21 going into the 4th...only to see the Jazz outscore them 40-13 in the 4th quarter and win by 6!

Slight typo above; Lakers won by 17, not 27.
Watching the highlights from the Knicks' double-OT win over Charlotte, I saw something I don't think I'd ever seen before: a team actually managed to get a tip-in at the buzzer with 0.1 seconds on the clock. You can't catch and shoot with less than 0.3 sec on the clock, or it gets waved off automatically. With the game tied at 109 and the Knicks inbounding from midcourt, they lobbed it to David Lee in the lane, and he reached back and batted it in at the buzzer for the win.

Gilbert went for fifty-four, but Caron was the one who got to the bucket several times in a row to pull them ahead for good in OT. Wiz were able to put it away when Gilbert hit a three off the glass in the last minute!

You do have to admit that they've got a lot of firepower. Gilbert, Antawn, and Caron is a pretty fearsome three-headed-monster that can light it up against a lot of teams out there. A couple of other interesting results from last night: Bobcats beat Utah in Charlotte, and though they're only 7-18 now, the Bobcats seem to have a knack for beating division-leading/contending opponents. They've beaten Cleveland, San Antonio, the Pistons, New Jersey, Orlando, and now Utah...that's six out of their seven wins total! It's like a super-extreme version of the Pistons playing well in big games, but taking nights off and losing against scrubs.
Houston had lost 17 straight at San Antonio going into last night; their last win at SA was when they still had Hakeem, Clyde, and Barkley! But the Rockets dominated in San Antonio last night, 97-78.

Some random Standings stuff...
The Pistons' Central Division is the only division in the league where all teams are .500 or better. NY, NJ and Boston are all 1 game back.
The Atlantic is the worst division with no teams over .500. The Raptors are the "class" of the division with an unimpressive 12-16 record.
Miami is currently in 9th place in the conference. Sitting in 3rd place in their division. Man, I'd LOVE to see them miss the playoffs, but there's a lot of ball left to play.

Saw that game too and it appeared that Gordon's 41 points were enough to pull out this game for Da Bulls. Obviously they saw the Pistons-Suns tapes and held Nash in check scoring wise. He did dish out 13 assists, but only two 3 point attempts and 11 pts compared to the 35 he put up vs Flip jr & co. Still when he was in there, the Suns played more undercontrol and he put them in position to win the game. Wonder if CB took MVP notes?? Unfortunately he is not fast as Nash or can see the court like him.
By the way, the Bulls announcers were praying that Big Ben would make at least one of his FT's as he was at the line in the last minute and he missed both. Bulls had a 16 point lead at one time, but they have an excuse>>their starting point guard Heinrich was out too.. :)

Saw this article today, Mike Monroe, SA E-N, and thought it was interesting that there is a place out there where a player can go to get physical, spiritual and mental health when he is having problems. The article spoke specifically about Francis and Penny Hardaway. Excerpt:
How does a former NBA All-Star know his career is in its last gasp? He presents himself to former Spurs coach John Lucas to help him rehabilitate body, mind and spirit.
Knicks guard Steve Francis is the latest to report to Lucas at Houston's West Side Tennis Club, where he will begin this week trying to get his legs stronger, his shot on track and his spirit renewed.
It is his spirit that most needs mending now, every bit as much as his knees.
"You know I always can do that," Lucas said, punctuating the assertion with his raspy laugh.
"I think Stevie was actually beginning to play better," Lucas added. "A lot of this physical rehab should have been taken care of in the summer. Now we're paying the consequences, but we've got to get it taken care of."
Francis has been a bad fit in New York since the Magic traded him last February for talented young guard Trevor Ariza and Penny Hardaway's expiring contract, a deal that ranks somewhere near the top of the long list of horrid trades Knicks general manager Isiah Thomas has made.
Francis has missed 12 games this season but has played a bigger role recently after post-brawl suspensions left the Knicks short of players. Mostly, this season has been a wipe-out for the former All-Star. That the Knicks would allow him to leave the team during a road trip to work out with Lucas, instead of with the team's trainers and coaches, speaks volumes. It could be a pre-cursor to buying Francis out of his contract, though the Knicks already bought out Jalen Rose's contract a little more than a month ago.
"That's the million dollar question," Lucas said. "Are they going to buy him out? They've got so much money and problems up there, you just have to wait and see. But, hey, if they bought out Larry Brown like that, they'll buy out anybody."
Lucas has worked wonders with athletes battling demons worse than aching knees and flagging spirits. He has helped many overcome substance-abuse problems, while simultaneously getting their games in shape.
I'm glad there is someone out there that has the ability to help a guy who is struggling. It seems Lucas is the last resort, the guys have just stopped listening to their team leaders. Maybe it is a matter of trust.

"I'm just tired of the pain and the medication," said Riley, who said there is no timetable for when he would like to return.
But he insisted he plans to be back with the defending champions.
"I'm going to be displaced for a while, but not disconnected at all," Riley said.
And top assistant Ron Rothstein will fill his spot on an interim basis.

Dallas is playing like a well oiled machine. If you look at that team the last few years they have made a steady improvement towards that ship.
They finally made it to the Finals last year, in Avery Johnson`s first full year, I believe. Now in his second year they are rolling.
The Mav`s aren`t afraid of the Spurs anymore, their hometown nemisis, which has given them a ton of confidence.
At the present time, if they come out of the West, nobody in the East can prevent them from capturing their first title.
Watched the Heat / Suns game this morning. Chris Quinn got twelve minutes, about two thirds in garbage time after Jason Williams got tossed. He was picked up by the Heat as an undrafted free agent after four years at Notre Dame. Point guard.
Nice looking kid. Takes the ball hard to the hoop, decent defender, but seemed to have (as much as a few minutes will tell you) a nice feel for the game. Threw some nice passes, included a couple to set up a pass to set up a shot, a pass to get a better passing angle into the post.
He could play some serious minutes at the point for Miami in a year or two.

Did you notice this? He crossed his arms behind his back and then bent over forward. He did that before the shot went up, and he didn't flinch after the ball went through. Was he praying? Stretching? Playing charades? No. 1 on my list of questions for this morning." Looks to me like he was getting in position to be launched from an invisible cannon.
Pretty funny. Watch Daniels in the baseline corner at the beginning of the video. Personally, I think he is the biggest devotee of the Church of Hibachi (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16460000/), Agent Zero style.

The Mavs had an easy time with Magic too, although there was a slight let down at end the of the third quarter.
Which means that the # 1 & 2 teams in the league, which happen to reside in the wild-wild western conference ran both of the #1 and #4 teams of the eastern conference right out of their own Arenas (Gilbert). :) So much for parity.
The east has a long way to catch up and our Pistons have to take advantage of other teams short comings. In other words lets hope that the return of CB and the insertion of Cwebb gives the Pistons the opportunity tomorrow to run the Bobcats out their arena tomorrow as payback to the prior two loses to this team.

The hype on this game was ubelievable, I heard some people say this could be The Nba Finals matchup!!!
Let`s face it, they do play the type of ball Stern is pushing for and it is fun to watch, however, IMO neither will win a championship this year.
Second round of playoffs is the furthest the Wiz will get, and they better have HC advantage (occupy one of the four top seeds) to make it there, or it`s out in the first round. You heard it here first.

What you see from the Wiz during the regular season is what you are going to get from them in the postseason, if not worse.
For the Wiz to advance past round one they better secure a top seed, or else see ya, in the first round. They can`t win on the road!

Funny story Bob told: Earlier this year, the team had a breakfast meeting at the hotel on the road. Chris Wilcox showed up in a robe, so Hill fined him -- just for being ridiculous. At a team meeting yesterday, Sene shows up in baggy shorts, a button-up shirt buttoned all the way to the neck, a gold chain and flip flops. Wilcox turns to Hill and says, "If I got fined for the robe, he should get fined for that outfit." Hill made Sene stand up in front of the team but did not fine him. Embarrassment may have been punishment enough.
I asked Bob if the D league is a guard-oriented league. He said he asked Sene if they had any plays for him. Sene told him they had one play for him, ran it the first game he played and did not run it again the rest of the time he played there. I guess that means it's a guard-oriented league.

I just hope he is not the factor that gets the Heat going. I mean they missed out on trying to sign Webber and Rose and finally found someone to beef up their bench. I know we will have to sacrifice PT for one of our yunguns, but even if Joe cannot find the backup pg. he still has to find some vet that can shore up the bench even when Hunter is out there with them:),
I heard a couple of weeks ago the Suns offered Jalen another buy out but he preferred to stay there and see if he can get that ring even without playing and contributing. I attended the Knicks-Lakers game last night to see if the lakers couLd over come their road woes and win one at home and to see if Zekes knicks are for real.
Well just as some of us suspected a few weeks ago, the Lakers are Fakers. All of those early wins were based on them outscoring teams at home who had not got their team's chemistry together yet.
Even though the game was close and the Knicks won on an alley-oop to Curry in the last seven seconds, they were able to penetrate the Laker interior defense at will. Starbury, Francis, and Crawford drove right by Smush and the reserves to take over the game in the second half. Richarson took care of the perimeter with uncontested shots. The game was only close because the Knicks missed 9 FT's and the lakers hit 11 three pointers. (they shot 27 of them as that is normally their biggest weapon when kobe is sitting.)
The lakers defense is non-existent and talk radio is allover them today blaming everyone from Phil just now trying to talk defense at midseason, to Lamar Odom not being ready to blaming the 4 game losing streak due to the loss of all-pros Luke walton and Kwame Brown to injury.:)
Meanwhile zeke's boys are a scrappy over achieving bunch who have already matched last year's LB team in wins and are only 3 games out of the final playoff spot. (Watchout Indy and orlando).
Meanwhile Big ben was paid $60 million to turn the Bulls around and they are only 5 games ahead of last years schedule. His numbers are 6.2 ppg, 10.3 rpg and 2 blocks. Well the guy he replaced, Tyson Chandler who pulled down 23 boards last night is putting up better numbers than Ben at 8ppg, 12.1 rpg and 1.8 blocks.
I know it's all relative but if the Bulls don't make it to the second round, some in Chitown will be quick to look at Chandlers numbers if they are better than Bens at year end and the Hornets manage to grab the 8th spot and take the Mavs to at least 5 games before succumbing:)

Moore had 19 points on 9-for-14 shooting in the Nets' 101-92 win over the Knicks on Sunday. "I've been struggling with my jump shot over the last couple of games," Moore said. "But yesterday, I got in 3,000 jump shots, 1,500 before practice and then 1,500 after. The shot felt good tonight and the guys got me the ball in the right areas.3,000 jump shots in one day. Now that is a commitment to getting better.

A point guard?
At least I think that's a big part of their problem, though I'm not sure LBJ is the leader they need him to be either.
Could also just be that any team with Larry Hughes and Damon Jones together is going to struggle.

popcornmachine has a similar stat that adds points to hv, which is (rebounds + assists + steals + blocks - turnovers)/minutes. They call it efficiency I think.

Any insult that begins with "why don't you just go back to..." typically gets the speaker in trouble.
But one does have to wonder why she was out of the kitchen... :stirthepot::MusicBigGrin:

Some off color or gender or politically incorrect comments get some people fired or they are asked to resign.
Maxwell's apology should have included some community service like cleaning her kitchen.:)

The Heat can move to within 1 1/2 games of the Wiz with a win this evening. At the moment the Heat are holding on to the 6th seed, the Wiz the #3 seed.
As I said earlier, is there any doubt the Heat will win that division? With or without Wade..........
BTW, the game is on NBA TV at 6:00 PM tonight.
Heard him a couple of times now and Mark Jackson is a pretty good broadcaster. I hope ABC sticks with him for a while.

I flipped over to the end of the Wizards' OT loss at home to the Raptors tonight during the Pistons-Nets game, but OMG, I had no idea how badly the Wizards choked to let it get into OT in the first place. I just saw the highlights on ESPN. This description is from the Washington Post's game re-cap:
After leading for most of the fourth quarter, the Wizards appeared to have the game wrapped up. After Arenas (34 points on 9-of-29 shooting) made two free throws to give the Wizards a three-point lead with 3.8 seconds remaining, the Raptors were forced to inbound the ball from underneath their own basket because they were out of timeouts.
Anthony Parker's long pass lofted harmlessly in the air, was deflected and grabbed near the three-point line at the Washington end by forward Michael Ruffin.
Ruffin landed with the ball but then attempted to throw it high into the air toward the other end of the court. Instead, the ball slipped out of Ruffin's right hand and landed directly in the hands of Toronto guard Morris Peterson, who had not played the entire game.
With Caron Butler running at him, Peterson half-shot, half-heaved the ball toward the rim, releasing it just before the buzzer sounded. To the amazement of Ruffin, the Wizards, the sellout crowd and Peterson himself, the shot went in from 31 feet.
"My natural reaction was to just throw the ball in the air and let time run out but I didn't get a good throw on it and there was a little more time than I thought," Ruffin said. "When I threw it, it kind of slipped off my palm. I didn't get a good grip on it."
It was a completely ridiculous play, and actually almost as unlikely as the steal-and-heave Sheed miracle against the Nuggets.

Yeah in that situation Ruffin was supposed to hold on to it and get fouled or check the clock first and if he just had to throw it, toss it high enough in the air so that the clock will run out before it falls.. If the Wiz don't rebound they will reaaly look back at this loss and that play if it affects their seeding.

Thanks for this great site about West playoffs. I am rooting for GSW for 8th, would love to see them play AND BEAT Mavs. Don Nelson has so much vengeance in his heart for Dallas and always beats them. Wow, what a finale, Spurs v. Barb, I think the Warriors can beat the Mavs too in the a first round matchup...They have already done it 2-3 times this season. That would really be an upset of major proportions. That of course would make it easier for your Spurs to get to the big dance.:)
Also would like to see the Clippers grab the 7th spot and see the Kobes sitting out this post season, but I know that won't happen.
I am totally primed for a warriors-mavs matchup. I hate to see sweeps in the 1st round and could be a big test for the mavs. a suns-lakers rematch would also be an entertaining 1st round matchup. spurs-nuggets is also enticing, as is a rockets-jazz clash.
thats my hope for the 1st round in the west.
in the east i want a bulls-heat matchup in the 1st round. other than that i don't care who else plays each other.

I just want to point out the sickening box score of Dwight Howard today...
35 points on 14-15 shooting... or should I say dunking.
7-10 from the free throw line
11 rebounds
5 assists
3 steals
My question is, has anyone ever scored more points while missing 0 or 1 shots?
Wilt would probably be the first place I would look, but it would be a hard one to research.
Edit: here is the best I could find.

Los Angeles Clippers' forward Elton Brand had his surgically repaired left Achilles tendon re-examined today by Dr. Craig Morgan at Christiana Care’s Wilmington Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware.
