SI.com - WNBA - Charlotte's WNBA franchise is forced to fold - Wednesday January 3, 2007 5:29PM (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/basketball/wnba/01/03/sting.fold.ap/index.html?eref=si_nba)
The WNBA's Charlotte Sting folded Wednesday, three weeks after the Bobcats gave up control of the team.
The WNBA was unsuccessful in finding a buyer for the Sting, one of the original eight franchises.
I think this has more to do with Charlotte being an over-rated sports market than a failure of the WNBA. Recent reports suggest that franchises can be purchased for less than $10 million, making them one of the cheapest buys in the sports team market, and a golden opportunity for any multi-millionaire to get onto the ground floor of ownership with a cheap vanity purchase.
