I know you Hoopheads are more casual on football, but this is a great deal for the Lions. Foster was a starter OT for Denver but wasn't able to work in that blocking scheme well.
Tatum Bell is an excellent back that can catch the ball out of the backfield and will be a terrific standin for KJ. Then when KJ comes back a great duo.
We now have 3 5th picks this year.

Good analysis. I agree with you and I like the deal. Plus Bly was a big PITA anyhow.

This might be the best move Matt Millen has made. Good thing it only took 7 years.

Are you sure Matt isn't tied up and gaged in a closet at the Lions training facility?:pound:

I've heard rumours from "insiders" (I think I read it on MLive or ProSportsDaily) that it's possible that neither Bell or Foster will ever play a game for the Lions, that Millen will turn around and trade them both for picks.
I don't know about that. OT and RB are 2 positions of need for us. Plus, Denver was offering one of the 2 of them plus a 3rd rounder, but Millen chose to take both and a 5th rounder (we gave them a 6th rounder). If Millen wanted picks so badly, why wouldn't he have taken the 3rd round pick in the first place?
I can't see a team giving up more than a 3rd rounder for Bell and much less than that for Foster.

Terry Porter and Joe Horn (both wide receivers) were cut from their respective teams.
Do you think the Lions should go after either of them?

I think Kevin Curtis is the #1 choice because he has excellent deep speed and because he's worked under Martz before so he knows the system.
Curtis visited Minnisota today and is in Detroit tomorrow. Martz is worried that Minny will try and sign him tonight.
If the Lions aren't able to land him, anything is possible. I hear Charles Rogers is available...

I forgot about Curtis. Yeah, he would be a really nice fit.

What the rumor is: Giants want to trade their 3rd pick for T Bell. Foster is going nowhere. Horn is too old . Porter????? Nah.

There's also the rumor (http://rams.aolsportsblog.com/2007/02/22/lions-cardinals-talking-joe-thomas-trade/) that has the Lions trading their 1st pick to the Cardinals for the 5th pick in the draft, and their 2nd & 3rd round pick... this would likely take them out of the Thomas range (O-lineman from Wisconsin).

I don't watch any college ball, so I don't see any of these guys play, but if Thomas is as good as everyone is saying he is, I'd like to see us stay where we are and draft him.
Of course, I also would have rather seen us take Denver's 3rd round pick over Foster.

I love getting extra picks. But dangit we need to way-up-grade our Oline.
