The Nuggets come to town on the back end of a back to back. The up and down AI/Carmella experiment has not lived up to expectations, however, they can be a dangerous tandem.

The Nuggets avg 105 PPG, but give up 103 PPG. The Pistons slow footed (at times) defense must be up to task in this one.

AI and Carmella will be a tough cover for the Pistons tonight. Last night AI actually looked like a PG at times; with 18 points and 12 assists. He was looking to pass first and didn`t take a bad shot all night.

Nene was very active also, he had 21 points and nine rebounds. Carmella had 27 points, as they defeated the Cav`s.

If this team could find it in their hearts to play defense they would be very good. This is one of the games I predicted the Pistons would lose at the beginning of the month.

We can'T expect Tay and Billups and Hamilton to play a lot when the game becomes one-sided. We don't want them to be injured in garbage time. Still, I think we will blow them out. DEEE-TROIT BASKETBALL!!!

Man, what a play! I grabbed my wife out of bed and made her check out the replays. She was even mildly impressed (more likely humouring me, but I'm ok with that).

We did get smoked on the offensive glass though, but a win is a win and this was a damn exciting one!

I was all prepared to come into the forum tonight and just rag on what a terrible game plan Saunders had going. He played the starters ragged tonight, and someone is going to pick up an unnecessary injury. Sheed just showed why he's worth every penny he earns making that incredible shot to put the game into overtime. That redeems him but really this was a game the Pistons should have turned into a blow-out. It does seem a disturbing pattern that non star players get career games against the Pistons. Nene' looked like a first round Hall of Famer tonight against the Pistons.

So the stats aren't kind to Delfino tonight but he hardly got in the game long enough for a cup of coffee and no boards or points which is very unusual for him lately. Flip Murray was a turnover machine tonight but he made a fantastic steal and finish that made up for most of those earlier bonehead plays. Chauncey is still not 100% and is he on a mission to really pull that groin?

didn't lee report last night that Hunter was sick with the flu while he was out?? well if that was the case did he return and knock out rip, Cwebb and almost Flip?? He darn near lost this game for us on the court in the second qtr. he came in with the Pistons up 15 and when he sat there were up only 3. Not only that but when he was out there Flip, jr had 4 turn overs. Message to FLIP sr...never put Hunter and junior out there at the same time.

Oh well how bout the SHEEED!!!!:sssh: 2000 fans were in the parking lot trying to get back in the palace. Joe dumars had already has his you better shape up Flip speech prepared :)

Really quick microcapTM...

Pistons got up big, got down, then miraculously made it to OT. Where they almost lost, but pulled it out playing with more desire and composure than Da Nuggetz.

Despite being handicapped by having to play with known narcotics felon Lindsey "Death Snort" Hunter, Flip Murray played some great defense on Allan Iverson and scored some timely baskets.

Tayshaun fell on his hip, but because he is so light in the pants, it was like a feather falling from a 10 storey brownstone to the street below.

Sheed sucked all game, barely yelled at the refs and had a crappy low energy attitude. But he made some timely plays late, including the game tying shot off glass, and was significantly more energized in the OT period.

Chauncey was good. Bad and good. But a lot more good than bad. And that's a good thing. Not a bad thing.

http://img133.imageshack.us/img133/3187/ziggymb9.jpgFlip Saunders was pretty lousy with the rotations, he absolutely refuses to go deep to his bench. Why he continues to play Death Snort Hunter is beyond me. Maybe LH has pictures of Joe Dumars at a David Bowie concert during the Ziggy Stardust era.

Dice had another great game, and this time it was not wasted. But remember the #1 rule that all disciples of micro observe. Dice only loses when he plays good against the elite. Any team that has Reggie Evans playing a role SUCKS, so this one does not count against my theory.

CWebb and Rip both missed this game with the flu. Rumour has it that they are rummaging through purses at the Palace's Captain's Quarters Lounge (http://www.palacenet.com/files/captainsquarters.pdf) coat check, searching for the elusive miracle drug. Let's hope whatever they found won't cause a reaction with mangos.

Delfino didn't do a lot, but I am totally digging his armband look. He looks way tougher and experienced. In the immortal words of Brittney Spears, "if you look good, you feel good".

Oh yeah, JMax played great except when he let NayNay run all over him in the paint. Max hasn't figured out where the circle is. But the big fella is really starting to come on. I think he's answered his critics as he's easily as good as Darko right now, with about a fraction of the minutes.

That's it until the next time I am wired on Diet Pepsi and fear of failure.

Peace and love my friends.

Sheed knocked more people over with that 55 foot triple than you can imagine. I know I was rolling on the floor in disbelief. My heart was racing so for the next ten minutes it scared me. What a finish to a game. In OT, when we were down a bit, its like, so what, we got an eternity to come back. And we did. Sheed hit yet another triple to tie the score late and we prevailed over Denver at the Palace for about the 12th or 13th straight time.

A second and half to go, and Denver is up three with the ball on their end. They just need to inbound the ball. Tay slaps the inbound pass to Sheed and Sheed nails a 55 foot three to tie the game. Totally improbable. Still can't believe it happened.

The Pistons started out well, with Jason Maxiell playing particulary well. But Rip and Webber were out with the flu. CB had tweaked that groin to end the game last night. JMAX got into foul trouble. Then so did Sheed. Hunter has the flu and has had it for quite some time now. Flip started despite the flu. We were basically a mash unit out there. The starters got us a 15 point lead, which we held well into the 2nd quarter. But then Flip put in two flu ridden guards in at the same time, Murray and Hunter, and what a disaster. We could not do a thing right. Goodbye lead, and it continued into the 3rd quarter. We were 10 down. A 25 point swing.

But we won. Billups kept making shots all game long, both inside and out. Dyess had it going very well from the outside save three straight misses toward the end of the 2nd quarter. Tay kept scoring on fast breaks and what not. (He had a terrible fall on an alley oop try, but got up after a while and shook it off. His tail is going to hurt in the morning.)

Murray made some shots, had that nice steal and dunk, but man he sure ain't a point guard. Between him and Hunter, that was some seriously ugly basketball being played. And we have a healthy, young, promising point guard down in the D-League who could have been playing. What a shame. And yet we won.

Delfino kept contesting for rebounds, but never got one. He made no shots. Only took two or three. Not much of a game from him. Some decent D though.

Sheed did a lot of damage inside in the 4th and OT, plus the two timely triples. Most of the game 'til then he was in foul trouble and about invisible when he was in the game.

Billups ended up with about 35 points. Lots of clutch free throws made too. Sheed made those two clutch free throws to put us up three in the last seconds. Huge shots.

Davis gave us some good defense in the first half, but for some reason did not play in the 2nd half. Weird there.

Mohammed got into the game just a bit, can't remember anything he did.

JMAX made one of his fade shots. Man does he sky for that shot. Thats his signature shot, the one Saunders won't let him shoot. Says it takes him away from the basket so he can't rebound the shot. Heck, Dyess gets to take the same shot. Free JMAX. Let him shoot, one of the best aspects of his game.

JMAX, when in, played seriously good D. There is no way anyone can say he can't play small forward as he is plenty quick enough for it.

Unbelieveable game. Crazy. What a win. GO PISTONS!!!!!PS, I truly believe we will win it all this year. However, I do not believe in taking chances. We need more depth. If Wade gets beyound 80% healthy, we can't beat Miami as we currently are. (But I believe Wade will not make that good of a comeback.) We need to get better to ensure a set of rings, and we can. Blalock and Amir both could have been huge in this game.

Nuggets coach George Karl knew his team had been beaten by a fluke.
"You could give him a hundred and he wouldn't make one, but he made one," he said. "I personally would have liked the ball to be thrown more toward the rim or the corner, but you can't criticize a lucky shot. That was a lucky shot."

Karl doesn't know Sheed. He could make 5 in 100.

It's almost the end of the regular season and Flip and his assistants has yet to recognize that the bench does not play well as a unit. CB, Sheed and Tay sits, the lead of 15 down to 3. Flip Jr may be a starter for the game but he is still part of the bench. Bench guys like Flip Jr, Delf and JMax has to play with the starters, period. It has been proven over and over again in the past few games.

You're awesome Warthog! The only thing that put a damper on my watching the replays of the shot (I didn't get to see it live) was after about the 20th time, realizing that the house was friggin' empty when he made that shot, and yet somehow packed during overtime. I noticed a few fans walking up the stairs, turned around with the "deer in the headlights look" as the camera was panning around after Sheed made his miracle shot. I am totally disappointed as a Pistons fan. But hey, awesome win.

wartcap:

the day started off interestingly, as my buddy decided to stay late at work and give his ticket to my other buddy, who enjoys going to events and things but doesn't follow the pistons all that much. whenever we sell tickets or don't go together, something happens at the game that makes us wish we were there. well we were certainly treated to that tonight.

first of all, the best deal at the palace is at buffalo wild wings. for $8 you get 10 boneless wings and 3 sauces in a nice carrying bin. add a pop for $3.50 and you've just fed yourself for a modest price - plus you often get more than 10 pieces (little extras thrown in). we got in our seats right in time for the national anthem. for those of you who don't know, right after the dramatic music the fire goes up and you hear a very loud BANG, and it's always fun to watch people get the poop scared out of them who don't know it's coming. my buddy about peed his pants haha. by the way, AI got so many cheers from the crowd that my buddy asked if opposing teams always had so many fans in our section. they were all pistons fans, they just happen to love AI.

the crowd was pretty full and loud to start the game, and the pistons fed off that with superior ball movement and scoring their first 10 points in the paint, playing solid defense and cruising to an early lead. it was about this time that a gorgeous red/blonde-haired chick came up the steps, and she had some work done to her chest area and it was completely fantastic. she came up and down the steps a few more times and i missed whatever was happening on the court at the time.

...hold on, still thinking about that one...

okay. so anyway, i know some of you have been touting flip murray on D, and yeah he got some nice steals in this game, but he single-handedly caused us to lose our lead in the 2nd quarter. he had a string of possessions where he didn't secure a pass, turned it over on a pass, lost a pass out of bounds, and got it stolen while trying to drive the lane. on the other end, he had no idea how to fight through screens and left J.R. Smith wide-open for consecutive baskets. after 2 straight dunks by denver and flip's god-awful play, the crowd booed quite loudly. hey, at least they were into the game!

maxiell had a spectacular first quarter when he was actually on the floor. he caused a lot of shots to be changed and got a sick block on anthony. he had a little bit of trouble with nene but wasn't covering him all that much. he definitely didn't let anthony out-muscle him and was a good player to stick on him defensively. tayshaun's fall was very scary, and all i could think was 'that alley-oop was SO not necessary with our huge lead' and 'how long could tay be out for?? the playoffs aren't far away!!' and i got nervous thinking our run at the title was finished.

it was frustrating watching that lead slip away. my buddy was more interested in the atmosphere than the game itself - he had trouble following plays and knowing when something good happened, etc. he had a lot of questions about the pistons that here we might take for granted, but it was cool that he was interested and asking. when the 3rd quarter was starting he was like 'where is everyone?' and i mentioned they hadn't gotten back from having their drinks yet, and later on he asked if they considered it a sellout and then wondered why when i said yes. :)

4th quarter, about 4-5 minutes left and us down by 5, he turned and asked if we were going to win, and i confidently said yes. i also mentioned that playoff games are 100x better and more fun, but little did i know what was going to happen down the stretch...

this was the one of the only games that felt like a playoff game. they even had the 'shooting the rock' finals between 2 contestants who had beaten everyone else throughout the year, the winner getting a trip to fly with the pistons to toronto on round ball one. you had to shoot a layup on each side of the basket, short jumper, free throw, and 3-pointer. highest score wins. both the red and blue players started off strong and tied at 4-4, so there was sudden death. first to make a free-throw wins. first sudden death, they both make their first shot, thinking they had won, then looking back at each other and realizing they had to go again. second sudden death, they both miss the first shot, red makes the second, but blue had just gotten the ball in the air and makes it too!! another sudden death!! blue had a little help because red had to chase his own ball, and blue got it passed back to him from a ball boy. at this point the crowd really gets invested into the outcome, and finally blue (i think) wins in the 3rd sudden death on his first shot. clutch.

down the stretch...well first what happened was rasheed played TERRIBLE, LAZY defense. i know he hit that shot and huge 3 in overtime, but before that it was the matador defense, compounded by AI consistently blowing by flip and then dishing baseline for an easy score. as chauncey missed a free throw late and then didn't get a bailout call, i thought we were finished. at least the crowd was on its feet for the last minute and cheering loudly for the last 3-4, making my voice hoarse like it was the playoffs. but i started thinking about our terrible home record, how i couldn't believe we lost, how we let the lead slip away, and i looked at that girl again walking up the steps to leave. ahhh how i love summer and jacket-less ladies. before the last play i thought to myself, our only chance is a steal and heave down the court, and imagined tay doing it. keep in mind that as they were inbounding the ball, fans were pouring out of the stands (and you can see it on the video that i'm in). the pass is inbounded and i see the ball tip and sheed grab it, and i can't explain it but i think everyone in the arena knew it was going in. it was really weird - everyone was holding their breath and it seemed like the ball was in the air for an hour, waiting to see if it had any prayer of going in. as soon as it dropped everyone went NUTS, i started jumping up and down like a little girl and belting out a high-pitched laugh/scream/wooooo that would've been pretty embarassing in a normal everyday situation. :) the whole overtime people didn't even go back to their seats, they all just stayed in the aisles/exits, standing up and watching us pull out the victory. we immediately called my friend to poke fun that he gave up his ticket, sat and enjoyed the moment, and left.

so in short, flip had a horrible 2nd quarter stretch (if his flu was really bad then i'll give him a pass for tonight, but i'm seeing him slip back into some bad tendencies and bet he'll play himself out of the playoff rotation), sheed had a horrible 4th quarter stretch, but we still beat a hot denver team without c-webb and rip. by the way, it was a bad idea to have 5 bench guys together in the 2nd quarter as well. it was okay for a bit, but eventually it caught up to us.

Flip Jr may be a starter for the game but he is still part of the bench. Bench guys like Flip Jr, Delf and JMax has to play with the starters, period. It has been proven over and over again in the past few games.

Pretty harsh judgement considering neither Hunter nor Murray is a point guard. And both had the flu on top of that. There is nothing wrong with using five bench players at the same time Just has to be the right ones. I bet a unit of Blalock who is a real point guard, Delflino, Amir Johnson, Jason Maxiell, and Dale Davis would do wonders as a unit. Dyess would be playing more with the starting unit, and taking some of Dale's minutes with the subs too.

Wart, I borrowed that great cap for the other board. Mostly for your take on Flip's defense. I try to preach about that over there and I don't get many to listen.

Blalock Blalock Blalock.

Career highs:Blalock/ Flip Murray
Points: 5/31
Rebs: 2/8
Ast: 4/12
Stl: 2/6

Blalock-
Roland Rating is -6.9 (horrific)
Net on court off court is -10.7 (worst on the team by a mile)
Production is -5.4 (worst on team, except for Dupree's GT)

But he does average 7 points in the D-League!!! Wow.

Maybe he has potential or something, but it sure doesn't show up in any stat. If he's a great defender, it is more than cancelled out by his inability to score (see +/- stats).

Hey, Tater and Dre...thats when you went to a Tiger game and they didnt have TV's in the hotdog stands area or in the bathroom. You just hope someone brought theie radio and had it on WJR....:pound:

A few years ago I went to a half dozen games at the Palace. They used to have a cheap deal... ticket and bus ride back and forth from Detroit for $12.

I took my little AM radio, and up in the cheap (and I do mean cheap) seats, we would listen to the WDFN play calls. Up there, sometimes it's hard to see a reach in foul!

On the way back, we would listen to the postgame show on the AM radio on the back of the bus.

Ahhh... now I'm getting homesick!

Stats can by very misleading, espesially in very short minutes like Blalock has played so far. Look a little closer. You throw out one bad game, and Blalock is otherwise even for the season in plus minus. Note, that one bad game was a bad game statistically for him, in the plus minus column, not a bad game for him personally. I know Murray has done better of late, but him at point overall has meant bad play by the team. Ditto for Hunter. The fact is, that the best we did this season so far for a backup point is the games Blalock played. (Although again, Flip Murray has had some good results as of the past couple of weeks, even though his defense has been lacking again the past 2 games.)
