So, are the Flames any good? Can an NHL expert give me an NBA comparison. The Wings are the Pistons and the Flames are the ___________?

roscoe36
04-11-2007, 07:10 PM
I'm not an expert but I consider myself knowledgeable.

Wings = Pistons is good. People expected the Wings to have a big dropoff this year, and they came back to win their conference.

The NHL playoffs are unlike other major sports. Each round, regardless of seeding is a dog fight. Calgary may be the 8th seed, but any team in the playoffs is capable of winning a first round and even a second round series.

Calgary was a scrappy team but they changed coaches, and while they can get on a roll and be an offensive juggernaut, they don't possess the same element of fear and physicality they had in the past.

Calgary has superb goaltending, but unlike Detroit and contrary to league trends, they do not have an excellent tandem. If their goalie doesn't come up big, they really don't have a #2 to go with.

Detroit on the other hand has two former championship goaltenders. In fact, Dominik Hasek is one of the 2 best big game goalies in the NHL (the other being New Jersey's Martin Brodeur). Chris Osgood is not great but he is totally serviceable and capable of starting on most of the non-playoff teams.

I would say Calgary is like Cleveland if we're making an NBA/NHL comparison. Not aesthetically, but we all recognize that the Cavaliers are a threat to the Pistons in a 7 game series, and so to are the Flames to the Wings.

Detroit must take care of home ice and play uptempo. They also can't get rattled if the Flames try to muscle them up.

Hope that helps.

Traditionally, the Wings struggle in the first round. If they make it out of there they thrive.

The opposing goaltender is usually the problem. Kiprusoff, of Calgary can be outstanding. Lucky for us we have Hasek.

Calgary has some really good guys like Iginlia and Huselius as well as others. They could be trouble.

Fantasy hockey taught me a lot :) I think I'm going to recruit Tay heavily for next year. He seems to be a closet fan.

But Flames = Cavs. I can remember that. Thanks.

I would actually say Flames = Bulls. Wings struggled against them, especially on the road. The Flames are the best home team in the NHL. They have some big defensmen that ran Wings forwards out of the rink a few years back. It is going to be a tough series. Many do not believe that Wings have what it takes to get by Calgary. As far as I heard, Wings' biggest forward (Bertuzzi) is out for the 1st game with a concussion. However, one of Calgary's better defensmen is day-to-day and may not play. I am not going to make any predictions, just wait and see.

Nemo

Best comparison is the Flames = Bulls. They'll play excellent defense and if the Wings cannot get shots past their goalie, they'll flame out against the Flames. I fully expect the Flames to win all their home games. We win the series if we take care of business at home..............Expect a 7 game series, or we lose..........................

roscoe36

I don't see Calgary as the Bulls for one reason. The Bulls have an element of danger about them. They are a threatening team.

The Flames are not threatening in a scary sense. They are less physical, less opportunistic than when we last faced them in the playoffs.

That may be, but Wings still struggled with Calgary past few years and tend to play tentatively when being pressured and or behind.

The Calgary Flames had a season with 96 points. This is more than 3 of the Eastern Conference Qualifiers. If they beat the Wings, this is not an upset like everyone thinks.............Beware of that eighth seed. I think the Wings are more snakebit facing #8 seeds than the Flames are Octopus bit......................................

The Flames are not threatening in a scary sense. They are less physical, less opportunistic than when we last faced them in the playoffs.

I agree that this is not the same Flames team we saw a few years ago. They seem slower and less intense, less grit.

I'm not saying I expect a sweep or anything, but if the Flames are a better team than they showed in Game 1, that team better show up for game 2.

Also, the Flames have the best home record in the league, and they also have the worst road record of any playoff team. Also, the Saddledome is a crazy place at playoff time.

This Wings team has struggled a bit this season, but I think they have found their identity. They have a lot of young, hungry players. They're reloaded, and they're ready. They played more physical, and more intensely.

GO WINGS!

Now let's see if we can steal one on the road. :)

mikhail1973
04-15-2007, 03:58 PM
Steal one? I dunno, they shouldn't give Calgary any life on their home rink. Can't let them have any confidence they can do any damage in this series. Just continue doing what they are doing, hitting, shooting the puck, and playing great defense. I know this series is not over, but if Wings keep going the same way they should prevail. Great win today.:cheerleader:

Good win today, now grab game 3 on Tuesday in Calgary to make it a commanding lead. No let downs this year.

Three home teams lost yesterday, so HCA is not really that much of an advantage in the NHL. Wings need to grab those 2 road games in Canada to sweep and get the momentum going to limit da dominators net time in games played.

It's Detroit's strategy to create as many shot opportunities and jump on rebounds because Kipper will make the first save 95% of the time.

Wings gotta be the most inaccurate shooting team EVER!.

Are you kidding me?
I have to agree with what both Darth and Roscoe said above. That should have been a 7-1 game, but because of Kipper's incredible play, he kept that game within range for his team. The Wings know that they have to continue to shoot with the same intensity and frequency for the rest of the series or the Flames will have a chance to tie this at home. They took advantage and capitalized today with the Flames sloppy, stupid mistakes in the first....gotta love PP's!! The 2nd was a bit scary, but we finalized it in the 3rd thanks to our youguns coming up big for us!!! 19, is he???? omg!!! And my favorite, Pavel (my cats namesake, fyi) came through for us AGAIN!!

I am very proud of the Wings. I'm very excited to see the games in Calgary where they will face a desperate team that is excellent on home ice.

Geez, I don't think it is possible for Lang to play any sloppier or his line to play any slower.

It's just good fortune the Flames didn't score in the first period.

We gotta lay some hits on them and make some plays. If we can score first, it might break their back.

mikhail1973
04-18-2007, 01:13 AM
I hope I am wrong, but I think Wings just lost huge momentum. They had the lead early in the third and all they had to do was stay out of penalty box. This would have effectively ended the game and most likely the series. Instead they pick up 3 penalties in a row and the rest is history. Now time to regroup and try to get that road win in the next game.

04-18-2007, 12:01 PM
I'm officially concerned. I didn't like our energy to start, and Kiprusoff is damn near unbeatable on home ice.

I heard some radio jocks calling out Lidstrom this morning. He wasn't good against the Oil last year, and he didn't look great against the Flames last night.

Yzerman was on CBC during the 2nd intermission and said that Nik knows when to make a play and when to keep it simple. That giveaway pass to Zetterberg's backhand was a bad play. He should have just got it out of the zone. It's on Zetts too for not getting it, but Nik initiated the play.

I'm getting really sick of Lang. He's got a crucial faceoff at the end of the game and he loses it. His body language out there STINKS.

mikhail1973
04-18-2007, 06:25 PM
Seems like everyone is being on Lang - the fans and the media. I wonder what's up with that guy. He was so good in last year's playoffs and this being his contract year. I would've thought he'd play with more fire. Sometimes an injury can do something like that, but he's played poorly for a while now.

roscoe36
04-20-2007, 12:30 AM
It's not Dom. It's everyone playing with their head down, showing the signs of defeat.

There are only a handful of guys who played well. Bertuzzi, Draper, Fippula, Cleary. The defense keeps letting us down. A miscue by Chelios cost us, and Lidstrom is now getting beat consistently (and badly).

Btw, does Lilja know what area code the net is in? I swear every one of his shots is off by 10 feet.

LA Dre
04-20-2007, 12:31 AM
I didn't see the winning goal in the second period, but the Flames second goal scored/shot by Conroy from the left in the first period was the killer in my opinion as Hasek just got caught flat footed there.

I guess I haven't watched that many hockey games lately, but I never seen a team drop to the ice as many times as the Flames did on that last Wings power play to sacrifice their bodies to block a shot at the goal. Talk about protecting a lead and your home ice!!!

Looks like this one is going seven!!

Wings win 5-1.

Game got really thuggish at the end. Flames totally lost their composure.

I hope they play like that in Calgary and march to the penalty box.

Btw, I love Canada but the CBC (national TV) is so unbelievably biased. Their entire production is geared towards showing everything the Wings do that could be illegal. At one point, they were calling interference where there was no contact...

When the Calgary backup goaltender took a dead puck two handed slash on Johan Franzen and dropped him to the ice (it looked like a wicked slash), the announcers said, "It didn't look that bad...". Heck, you're not supposed to wield the stick like a weapon, that guy should be banned from the playoffs.

TaShawn
04-21-2007, 06:24 PM
I have to sort of agree that there looked to be a little acting on that hit to the chest. When he stayed down, I figured he got hit in the face, but the replay showed it was only to body. Still, that was uncalled for.

What was that goalie doing in there anyway? It was obvious he was looking for a cheap shot right when he started. He wasn't in long enough to get angry.

TaS, you gotta understand that wielding the stick like a weapon, two handed hacks are usually massive suspensions.

He swung hard, and if Franzen wasn't wearing pads, that would have hurt like heck.

I'm not saying he shouldn't be suspended... but when I saw he wasn't hit in the face, I didn't really worry about it.

Unless it cracked a rib, I'm not sure why he was down for so long though. Once you get hit by surprise and go to the ice, you may as well just act it up a little. It's what they do in soccer... except for the ice part.

Totally missed the game. I showed my girl the slice job by Calgary's backup goalie and she really gasped. Then I told her the repercussions of bringing your goalie and getting him kicked out.
1. I said if the starter comes back up, its like leading Orlando by 20 with 4 min to go and they cut it to 3. The starters have shut it down AND one can come back in and get hurt. well in Hockey, if the goalie comes back in and gets hurt...WOW.

The pressure would have been on the Wings take care of business at the Joe if they had lost this one after out shooting the Flames 3-1 for this series. Finally they get to the second round. Go Wings.

Good game by the Wings. Proving once again that a great goalie can steal you a game or two in the series, but the better team usually wins. Kipper was outstanding, but even he can't work miracles. If you give up almost 60 shots, something is bound to go in. Now get some rest, boys, and onto round 2.

If Dallas wins tonight in Vancouver, the Wings will face the Stars.
If Vancouver wins Game 7 at home, it'll be San Jose traveling to Detroit for Game 1.

So who do we want? I think the Sharks have the more exciting team. Nabokov is a pretty good goalie and they have guys like Thornton, Marleau and young Michalek and Carle on their team. Might be a very tough matchup.

I don't know much about Dallas. Seems like their defense is good. Any thoughts?

Ok, looks like I should have finished the article. Yep, we fared much better against Dallas this year. The Sharks blew us out on two occassions.

That wrist flick over the net with Hasek lying on the ice was pretty lucky.

So was the goalpost Cleary hit with a minute or so to go in the third period. In the game it happens like that, you also need luck to win games. But sometimes you have to make your own luck.

Kip was making his own luck. 50 saves! I would even argue that he was so much in the zone that he knew that shot was going to his the post and didn't want to waste his energy defending it.

Kip was my fantasy goalie. It was weird rooting for him all year and wanting him to miss everything in the playoffs.

Kip was the ONLY reason you won the fantasy hockey. He stole it from me!!

At least he's gone now. Now, if YOU would only leave. :pound:

He could've stolen the series from the Wings as well. I think many people are happy to be rid of him this year. Nabokov/Turco - here we come.

LOL. Bite me Wood shop!

You had the best goalie (Brodeur) by far and paid less for him. I think Nabokov helped me as much as Kipper in the end. Brodeur had me sweating so much that I wasn't able to pull my goalies as early as I wanted to and it almost cost me dearly.

I can't wait to resume our battles. Baseball and basketball are mere distractions now, lol.

I'll bet Brodeur will be the number two pick next year (after Crosby), but I'll pass on him cause I hate the Devils. I've got another goalie in my mind.

We want the Stars. Let Anaheim and San Jose beat the snot out of each other. Besides, that one hour of time difference could be the difference between my living and dying through these playoffs.

Don't know if this was posted yet...

NHL.com - News (http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=300325)

Calgary Flames goaltender Jamie McLennan has been suspended five games, Calgary coach Jim Playfair has been fined $25,000 and the Flames’ organization has been fined $100,000 for a variety of actions late in Game Five of the team’s Western Conference Quarter-final series against the Detroit Red Wings.

I am really mixed on who I'd want Wings to play. But it is all for selfish reasons. I know that Wings would have somewhat of an "easier" time with Stars. Stars are smaller, and not as physical. Historically Wings do well against Stars and they own Turco. And, obviously, Dallas is closer. We struggled with San Jose who plays much more physical style than Dallas. And the flights would be longer. However, if Wings play Sharks all of the games would be on local TV, so I get to see them.

Interesting article by Al Strachan on suspensions in NHL.
Here's the link to the full article FOX Sports - NHL - Time for NHL to rethink suspensions (http://msn.foxsports.com/nhl/story/6730140)

Here is the exerpt from it:

Hockey is a rough sport. It always has been and it should stay that way. To take out the gratuitous violence without taking out the inherent heavy hitting is not as easy as it sounds. But the way the game is going, the league has no choice but to try.
They may deny it, but there are players out there who are definitely trying to injure their opponents.
The presence of a puck is not a factor in their game. And they don't waste time injuring plumbers like themselves. They go after the stars.
Stiffer suspensions might work. But the evidence is against it.
Perhaps it's time to try a radical idea. If Brad May takes out the Wild's best defenseman with a move that was clearly a flagrant transgression of the rules, then don't sit out Brad May. Sit out Chris Pronger or Scott Niedermayer. The Wild lost a top-flight D-man. Now, so did the Ducks.
Suddenly, these coaches and general managers who publicly decry the head-hunting but secretly applaud it might change their minds.
Granted, it would take a lot of wisdom from the NHL's judicial department and so, as has been suggested before, perhaps the process should be turned over to a committee.
But this much is clear. Injuries as a result of intentional violence are increasing, and the suspensions aren't doing anything to change that fact. It's time for a radical mind-shift before there's a really serious incident — one that ends up with more than an injured player to worry about.

Bring on the San Jose. This is going to be very physical tight series. Very interesting. Wings still have everything they need to push ahead. I know they struggled with SJ throughout the year, but these are playoffs and everything is starting from scratch.

Sure, that's what I said about the Dallas Mavericks and Golden State before their series. Gulp.:nailbiting:
