Two voters had Popovich 3rd, and there was one 3rd place vote each for Karl, Flip, and Zeke. Someone voted Riley 2nd, for reasons that are hard to fathom.

I think they got it right. :thumb:

Good job by Sam & the Raptors.

I saw a behind the scenes look at the Raptors on NBAtv in the preseason and I wasn't too impressed with Mitchell.

Like a lot of coaches, he just said everything twice.

"Good hustle Chris. Good hustle Chris."

"Keep moving your feet. Keep moving your feet."

The practice seemed too laid back and unorganized. I guess I would put him in the player's coach bucket.

(Sorry for the negativity... I'm just still in shock that Flip didn't get the award.)

Also, the coach of the year can't get knocked out in the first round, can he? When was the last time that happened? I'm really asking, because I haven't looked into it.

Hubie Brown won it with the Grizzlies in '04, but lost in the first round to the Spurs. I didn't quite remember this, but Doc Rivers won it in 2000 without Orlando even making the playoffs.

His players respond to him. They've reached heights few expected them to attain.

Who is a better candidate. Much of what a coach does goes on behind the scenes, so the practice you saw probably was not indicative of what he really does including managing players egos, making adjustments during games, etc.

New Jersey has a good squad. There is no shame in losing to them in round one.

Apparently that is a good coaching move...saying everything twice. I like it.

I would have voted Skiles up higher myself...Take that headband off, Ben...Take that headband off, Ben...

It's sort of like the MVP vote. The criterii are so vague that people end up voting for guys who haven't gotten the respect they deserve and so on...

That's why it's not called the "Best Coach Award."

All I know is that I would pay Avery Johnson more $ to coach the Pistons than Sam Mitchell.

So if the Pistons would've lost to NJ (it is still theoretically possible) it won't be a big deal since they are a good squad? :pound:

Hey man, I honestly don't mean this to be an ass.

I was just curious why, specifically, you felt Saunders should have won.

Its a joke man!

It was interesting at the start of the year reading about Sam on realgm. If I remember, it was pretty negative. getting to where they are at is damn impressive to me.

Because he drove away our #2 draft pick, took the best team to the playoffs last year and totally screwed the pooch by overplaying the starters, got out-coached by an egotistical used-car salesman, Gordon Gecko wannabe in Miami, and ultimately caused Ben Wallace to leave for Chicago because he was hell bent on making Ben play zone defense and disrespecting him as a man...

and yet still managed to keep his job this year. That's what I call coaching!

Low, he must have made that statement as a sarcastic remark :)

I think if the Knicks hadn't tanked in April, Zeke would have finished ahead of both the dolphin and his nemesis George Karl:stirthepot:

The Raptors continue to get disrespect from the fans (including here).

How many division titles have the Raptors won?

How many new players did they have this year?

Who coached the hottest team in the East since January?

Sam Mitchell

It's a no-brainer folks. And believe me, you wouldn't mind Sam too much as a Pistons coach. Unlike Avery, he doesn't sound like a whiny child, and he will tell you what is on his mind (sometimes to his detriment).

On the topic of the Raptors not getting respect...

They are on NBAtv tonight? The winner of a division doesn't get televised Nationally?

On the other hand, they did lose on their home floor to the Nets. Maybe they should move the Raps to OK City.

In his defense, he did allow his 7' Euro star to play the perimeter... which I know a lot of coaches would not have put up with.

NBA TV shows a few first round games every year, as I recall. It usually ends up where almost each first round series has one game on NBA TV. I don't think it extends into the second round.

They are televised nationally. NBATV in Canada is called Raptors NBATV. They own the station. :)

If this happens, there will be nowhere on the internet you can hide from me! :gun1:

After he reamed him out publicly and demanded that Bargnani play defense and rebound. The kind of treatment LB was reviled for.

The way I understand it, Colangelo was pressuring Mitchell to play Bargnani and he wasn't doing it. So they reached a compromise and said that if Barg plays better defense, he will "earn" playing time. Shortly thereafter... like the next week, he was playing better defense and magically started getting playing time.

Did he wake Bargnani up with his tough love? Or did it just give him a respectable out for his earlier decision to NOT play him. Was Bargnani's defense instilled? Or did it just natually develop as he got more time on the floor and grew comfortable?

We'll never know with LB, cause our GM is hands off when it comes to coaches.

I can't say I agree with this one. The Raps got a complete roster overhaul in the offseason, and that, in addition to the maturation of Bosh, probably has more to do with Toronto making the playoffs than any of Mitchell's borderline act.

Utah, Phoenix, and GS improved because they were healthy this season; nothing's changed in Dallas or San Antonio; and to me no coach has done anything really spectacular except...

Jeff Van Gundy.

I agree.

I wonder how many coaches could have done what he did in the western conference, minus his two stars for a long stretch of the season.

I'd say there were no standouts this year. Van Gundy would be one of my candidates, but people probably look at him having McGrady and Yao, so they wouldn't give him full credit even though they missed quite a bit of time and he had to operate without his two main assets. Toronto was a good story, so the league probably felt like they deserved something for that.

WOW! BULLCRAP! BS! MAJOR BS! Sam Mitchell does not deserve the coach of the year. Hes a crappy coach who just ended up recieving a talented roster.Hes not that good of a coach. I though that Avery Johnson deserved it more after rebounding from that disgraceful final 4 games in the finals

Wait a minute here. Who has more talented roster Johnson or Mitchell? Comon, lets use some common sense. If Johnson wouldn't have won 60 games this year with Dirk and Co., it would have been a failure.

We'll see what Colangelo thinks when they get down to negotiations. If Colangelo thinks he overrated, then an easy out will be to let some other team offer more money and act like it's a $ thing.
