Our Live Draft is scheduled for Thursday, August 30th at 9:00pm EDT. The NFL season starts the following Thursday, September 6th.
I'd like as many people to be able to attend the draft as possible. Rather than making a big poll with 100 different times on it, I figured I'd start out with a nice simple one to see if any change to the time is needed.
Please cast your vote.

Jammer,
I'd like to attend but as things stand right now I have to work that night. I have the following Friday through Monday (7th through 10th)off. Prior to that week, I will have Monday & Tuesday off, Plus be home in plenty of time to draft on those weekends.
Do we want to do it a bit sooner? Sometimes things come up at the last minute, and we wont be able to get a live one going if that happens. Of course...do it too early and injuries can kill you.
I'd really like to do a live draft, but you know if its not in the cards...no biggie...I missed the baseball one and I'm still kicking all your %%%%%es anyhow.:pound:

So far it's a tie between can't make it but want to draft and I'm not even in the league but I really like poll! haha
Tater, don't worry about not making the draft, I've already pre-drafted for you. I've selected all of the Detroit Lions back-ups as your top picks. The good news is that the majority of them will probably be starting by week 6. The bad news is that they'll still be playing for the Lions.
Seriously though, I really didn't put too much thought into the draft time because I figured that there would be a good chance that it would be changing anyway. I figured that 1 week before the season was the absolute latest that I'd want to draft though. However I also didn't want to draft too soon due to the injury factor that you had mentioned. Usually the starters get the most minutes in week 3, so that would be the game that injuries might be a factor for teams' starters.

Well, if I get the Lions backups you draft for me...that means I get Drew Stanton. :):) Oh wait, TFD will take all the Qb's. I'm screwed.
Ok, well, once other people respond, hopefully we can come up with a different time I can make.
I didn't vote because i'm not sure if i can make any date/time that's set out. the reason being is i am leaving my home in london and heading over to you guys in the states for some travel. so hopefully i'll be able to find an internet cafe at whatever time is planned.
otherwise i'll be mailing in my auto-picks. the only way i could guarantee being at the draft is if it was before i leave (before 20th august). but i don't expect any allowances to be made for me. if you make a date, i'll do my best to be there.

ok its getting closer to draft time, and i've got yet another sport to try and learn while trying to somehow be a fantasy guru. you'll be getting some questions from me again, so if anyone can answer i'd be most grateful.
first up:
what is the 'fan pts' column in the stats? is that just like a rating for the player? is it yahoo or expert determined or is it somehow related to what the fans think?
cheers guys.

Fan points is fantasy points. It's funny that you asked Webz. I was going to explain this last night, but I was too tired.
Football is harsher than the other fantasy sports we've played because you don't get partial credit for winning categories. For example, in baseball, you can go 7-4-1 (winning 7 cats, losing 4, and getting a tie in the last).
But in football everything is added up. You win or lose that week.
For example, let's say your pass receiver catches a pass for 18 yards and runs 4 more into the endzone and scores on that play.
He would get (depending on our scoring system Jammer set up) about 6 points for the score, about .5 for catching the ball, and 2.3 for the 18+5 yards he gained.
So that play nets 6+2.2+ .5 =8.7 fan points.
I think every yard gained is .1
Fumbles are -1
Interceptions or fumble recoveries by your defense are 1 or 2 points.
Typically, in leagues I've played in, you'll get about 100 points average at the end of the day, although scores of 50 or 170 are possible on really bad or good days for a player.
So, if you & I played week one and you got 123.7 points and I got 115.8 points to end the week, you are 1-0 and I am 0-1. Even though I beat everyone elses score that week, I am still screwed. It's harsh.
Does that help?

I split the $9.95 season cost of the Live StatTracker with my son. Over the course of an entire season it costs about 2 cents per day. That reminds me, I have to go collect today's 2 pennies from my kid...

Man, you're lucky to have someone to split the cost with. I'm hoping to secure part-time employment to help me offset the one time fee. It's quite a financial burden on my family.

Thanks for the info Tater mate.
Got another one.
PAT Made for kickers?
PAT is point after touchdown. The kicker gets an easy kick (Almost never missed) which is one point in real football and usually one point in fantasy.
You lose points if your kicker misses a field goal or extra point.
Side note...if a team goes for a two point conversion (run or pass which is harder and relatively rare) you'll get credit for it if your player (any position) was involved.
Unlike hockey, where, say, a goalie scores or gets an assist and you get no credit, if your kicker throws a touchdown pass you will get credit (I think), But that is EXTREMELY rare, although I think the Patriots kicker did it fairly recently.
roscoe36
07-17-2007, 05:36 PM
It's just like the two point kick after a try but the degree of difficulty is almost nil because it is from point blank range, even though both sides lineup and the defense tries to block or harass the kicker.
Ok so I'm also wondering about the positions. Why do we have 6 bench slots when there are only 9 scoring slots?
Teams only play once a week right? So if everyone only has 1 game, when will these bench guys ever get a run?
And who should you usually stock there?
PS - I've seen probably half a dozen games in my life so I sort of understand how the game goes, just not tactics, positions or fantasy-wise. haha.
PPS - I just found a website which should help me. NFL Play Football: Football Basics (http://playfootball-vweb1.playfootball.com/footballfacts/basics.html)

INJURIES! In football they happen all the time. You'll wish after one month that you had more bench spots, lol.
Plus there is a bye week for each team...I was going to explain that too. Good questions.
If you draft a quarterback and a backup quarterback make sure they don't have the same bye week off. If they do, get a different back up. So look at team schedules when making your list. :)
Darth Tater
07-17-2007, 05:45 PM
Who should you stock...well, personally I have one or two backup qb's, like 5 running backs total, and maybe 7 or 8 wide receivers.
Drafting: most people take one if not two running backs with their first two picks (nobody will fault you for grabbing Peyton Manning,QB, though). Running backs become more valuable as the season progresses due to injuries and they get the ball more than anyone.

Anyone who hasn't played fantasy football before should really look at a mock draft from any year. Don't bother much looking at individual players, but look at the positions. You'll see stuff like you shouldn't draft a kicker or defense too early no matter how good they are. Conversely, generally think running backs in the first two rounds.

webz, football is so much different than rugby because it so unbelievably violent. The pads protect and contribute to that.
I believe the average career of a pro NFL player is under 4 years. A lot of guys don't make it, and many are physically destroyed in their later years.
I still enjoy rugby quite a bit though. Especially when the Springboks or All Blacks are kicking the Wallabies' butts!

We have filled the 12 league spots and currently have 3 people on the waiting list. If a spot becomes open before or during the season, we'll fill the vacancy in order from the list.
I really don't want to exclude anyone, but I find that once you start getting past 12 teams the talent pool gets really thin. Between injuries and bye weeks, it's hard to field a full lineup each week.

More questions for whoever is willing to answer. I'm looking at defenses now. Trying to figure out what some of these are.
Only ones I'm really stuck on are:
TD - In what relation to TD's is this?
Safe Tackles - ?
Turnovers (Intercepts and Fumbles) - I'm guessing these are total FORCED
I know what pts allowed, sacks and blk kicks are.
Cheers.
I just voted on the poll too. I can make any draft date and time as long as it is before the 27th of August. After that, probably not at all. Any chance we can swing it a few days earlier Jammer?

If the defense intercepts or recovers a fumble and scores on that play.

Safety...when the defense tackles an opponent behind the opponents line of scrimmage. two points for your defense (plus in real life the defensive team receives the ball on a kickoff)

Just to clarify, a safety is when an opponent is tackled in their own END ZONE. If the QB is tackled behind the line of scrimmage but not in the end zone, that is called a sack.

OK, since there are several people that would like to attend the draft but can't, let's see if we can find a date and time that works for everyone.
**Note: The original draft date/time will stand unless we can find one that can accommodate more people.**

The players are automatically pre-ranked. I've had pretty good fortune in the past letting the computer do the picking.
If you want to adjust the pre-rankings, say you favor one player over another (or several others) you can push him higher on your draft list, and likewise push down guys you think are overrated.

Woody might actually do pretty well if he doesn't make his own picks. Are you sure you can't make the draft, Woody?

REMINDER:
Our Live Draft is THIS TUESDAY, August 21st at 9:30pm EDT.
It is advisable to arrive at least 10 minutes before the start of the draft to ensure that you can log in and are comfortable with the settings, layout, etc. as our draft starts right on time.
It is also advisable to test your system to ensure that you are able to participate in the live draft. You can do this from our league's Yahoo home page. Click on (test your system) just under League Notes.
If you plan to do so, please ensure that you pre-rank your players up to 45 minutes before the start of our draft.
(Note: players are already pre-ranked by Yahoo, so you don't have to rank them if you don't want to. You can use the default rankings.)
Hope to see you all Tuesday night!

Bill:
Your concerns are well taken.
In hockey, I participated and picked a bunch of old-timers (Broduer, Iginla, Selanne, Brind'Amour, Lidstrom) and it turned out well. (Second place to a heavily sweating Tater.)
In baseball, I participated and picked a bunch of old-timers (Pudge, Delgado, Rolen, Griffey, Bonds, Lidge) and my team sucked.
In football, I would probably pick a bunch of old-timers ( Otto Graham, Leon Hart, Joe Schmidt, Lem Barney, and Doak Walker). They would all be injured or dead by the beginning of the season.
I think I'll let the computer do the work. That way some computer geek or stat sprocket will find guys I never heard of. That will give me a big headstart on Tater.
