OK guys

I set up this tournament. I picked special settings so that we have all basketball questions with special emphasis on the Pistons and Shock.

However, being computer challenged, I am not sure I set it up right for basketball, so those basketball questions should start tomorrow. If not, I'll have Slippy help me out. Todays questions are general questions. I think we all will get different questions for the most part .

Hint: the quiz is timed so you get more points the faster you go.

You play every day, but can only play once a day. It keeps track of your scores and has a hall of fame too I think.

I've played these types of things before but never hosted one. Please be patient. You can join the tourney any time, but remember to play every day as it keeps track of your cumulative as well as daily scores. You get more points for each person that plays that is ahead of you.

It can be a lot of fun. But again, I gotta work out some bugs being new to this so the first couple days may be like a trial.

Here is the link. Again, basketball questions hopefully here tomorrow. I didn't want to change it today because I already played and it would throw it off.

Roscoe, hope you like it. If not feel free to kill the thread. No worries. :)

Yea! Good job!

OK, so tomorrow you can click on standings and all that. Also, it looks like I've got it set right for Pistons questions starting tomorrow. I think it kicks over at midnight or something.

I may change later in the week to general NBA questions or something if I see we are getting repeats or just to keep it mixed up.

In my first post, I meant to say you get more points the more people play. So Coyne Jeremy got 12 points as the leader, but his points will go up if more people play and fall below him.

The object of the game is

1. Don't let Slippy win.
2. Have fun.

I think you get cyber "awards" for the first three places at the end of the month and go into the hall of fame or something.

Keep on playing.:)

Oh Brother. A dismal first performance for me. That's okay. I'm not good at games, but I love them. Hey I got the Cornbread one somewhere out of the basketball immersion of the last three years! Is it just straight scoring? Any partial credit for not guessing and leaving the question alone? What about the relation of time to correct answere. Is it worth it to try to google real quick and get the answer? LOL.

Oh My God, I'm strategizing to optimize my chances at a win. By God Darth you've been a bad influence over me in the past year. No question about it. LMAO.

There are a total of 1000 points on ten questions. Each question is worth 100 points each. Every second you take subtracts 1 point.

Example: It takes 18 seconds for you to answer question one correctly...you get a score of 86 on that question.

so if you get 8 right total on the quiz that day, it's 8 x 100 =800. But it took you 90 seconds to answer them all. so 800-90 = a score of of 710.

In other words, you gotta balance accuracy with speed.

Hope that helps.

It's usually too time consuming to search for answers (and not nearly as fun).

I'll put in some movie questions and other stuff if eveyone wants. I just thought I'd start predominently with basketball. I'm still not sure why we didn't get all Pistons questions today. Let me know what you guys want and over time I'll get it in.

the questions aren't the same? thats not fair.

They do that to help prevent cheating. Like some of these things get pretty competitive. But eventually most questions work their way around and they are all supposedly relatively of the same difficulty.

There are thousands and thousands of questions. No way he can do that. lol.

I think I figured out how to do custom categories. I put Star Wars for next Tuesday. I'll put in the Pistons AFTER Tuesday on Thursday or something. I think you can't have two customs listed at once so you have to change them.

So do you guys want the same questions or change them for everyone? The consistency is nice, but it's really easy to cheat (ask someone or register under a different name and play twice).

Also, there is a bias toward Americans, so I'll be putting in questions that are exclusively Canadian and Australian here & there.

There is a way to cheat the system. I knew somebody in the past who did it. He explained it to me, but I didn't fully understand what he was saying. I really didn't have much respect for him "beating the system".

I only got one question on the Dark tower series. It's actually seven books long and I read the entire series. I think it took him around 30 years to complete it. I read it over the course of about 13 years. Three were written when I first started it.

It's kind of horror/fantasy/western all mixed into one.

I think it all depends on the category. I know some people blew out the history questions while others (like me) really struggled. I did well in literature while others found it challenging.

If you guys want, I can move to all "medium/average" difficulty questions in all of the categories.

Don't forget next week I'll put in some categories for Canada and/or Australia. Most of us will struggle on those, but it will help the people who hurt by most of the questions in the other categories which have an American bias.I'm trying to level the playing field to keep it interesting and competitive for everyone.

I appreciate the feedback!!!! Please keep it coming. :)

I only got three right. I admit, I know almost nothing about Canada; however, 3 of my questions were about characters that Keanu Reeves played in movies. I didn't even know that guy was Canadian. If they woulda asked me questions about Bob and Doug McKenzie and the Great White North, I may have been able to get six right.

damn, there was a lot of american-related questions today.

American-related? I got a question on the fennel. Never even heard the word in my life:
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a species (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Species) in the genus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genus) Foeniculum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foeniculum) (treated as the sole species in the genus by most botanists (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Botanist)), native to the Mediterranean region (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mediterranean_region) and southwestern Asia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asia), from Morocco (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morocco) and Portugal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portugal) east to Pakistan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pakistan), and north to southern France (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/France) and Bulgaria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulgaria). It is a member of the family (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_%28biology%29) Apiaceae (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apiaceae), formerly the Umbelliferae.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fennel#_note-flora)[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fennel#_note-grin)
It is a highly aromatic perennial (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perennial_plant) herb (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herb), erect, glaucous green, and grows to 2.5 m tall, with hollow stems. The leaves (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leaf) grow up to 40 cm long; they are finely dissected, with the ultimate segments filiform, about 0.5 mm wide. The flowers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flower) are produced in terminal compound umbels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umbel) 5–15 cm wide, each umbel section with 20–50 tiny yellow flowers on short pedicels. The fruit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fruit) is a dry seed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seed) from 4–10 mm long, half as wide or less, and grooved.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fennel#_note-blamey)
Fennel is used as a food plant by the larvae (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larva) of some Lepidoptera (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lepidoptera) species including the Mouse Moth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mouse_Moth) and the Anise Swallowtail (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anise_Swallowtail).

I don't write the questions. They are written by people just like ourselves.

I've asked you guys for feedback all along. Let me know what categories you like and don't like. I'm always happy to make adjustments, but I don't know unless you tell me specifically what you want.

It's supposed to be for fun.

I don't think it's supposed to be any real or accurate measure of a person's intelligence. Heck, Slippy and Linwood even do well now & then.:pound:

There are movie questions coming up too. I'm pretty sure I'll do poorly on those. If people like, I can stick to mixed trivia and subjects like literature and Geography and avoid the Star Wars junk. I was just trying to add flavor so on any gven day any given person can win.

In the end, in all likelihood, the jack of all trades will come out on top. Just have fun. :)

There are certain set categories, like mixed, General, Animals, literature, Geography, etc.

Then there are special ones I have to set up like Star Wars, Pistons, NBA, Stamp collecting, Cats, etc. Just about anything can be found here. I'm guessing there re hundreds, or more likely thousands.

Somehow, I think we all got the same questions today on Star Wars. I thought I had it set to mix them up. I'll check it in a few minutes when it resets for today.

I have set my goal. I am going for the Books and Worm Package. Short-term, that is.

Long term...it's gotta be the Personal Aircraft Carrier. A true luxury item.

The Insane Horse of Doom is a real value at only 333 points. That'd be pretty hard to pass up. How many people can say they own an Insane Horse of Doom?

Crap! I cheated by accident. I played under my 12 year olds name ("Lucky") by mistake (because she never logged out) and got them all right in 94 seconds. So I just played again, cussing, every question was different and I still got them all right with a better score. Sorry. She's mad she didn't get to play but liked the score. LOL.

Hey, tomorrow we will all get the same questions since it is a special category and I can't set the "cheat" controls so we need to be :sssh: on the answers until everyone's taken it.

Also, I'm about out of new default categories so we'll be getting the same topics (but different questions) again.

You guys are funny. I know what you don't like, but I don't know what you do like...and no, I'm not going to assume that everything you do like is whatever is not on the already existing list of things you don't like. :dizzy2:

Personally, I hate Geography and movies but I put them in there thinking some people would like those a lot.

Other people do monthly or weekly categories. Would people prefer that? Or should I ask, would you not like that?

I'd like to get as many people participating as possible. It's something to do, at least during the off season. I know some people are having fun beating me:darthvader::deathstar1:, but I think your efforts would be much better spent trying to knock off guys like D4E:lecturer: with the most overall points, Prof:lecturer: with the highest point ave., and a couple others (DBA, Coyne, and Nemo) who are generally kicking our tails consistently. I like Trivia, but my talent lies in managing fantasy sports teams.

Next month we begin fresh. The standings start all over although I believe the top ten go into the Hall of Fame, and D4E will get credit (a cyber trophy?) for winning it all.

So hopefully new people will play starting August 1st.

I think I've seen a trend that more people play when I use sports cats. Let me know if we want to go that way.
