View Full Version : Life in hell - GREAT article on Lions

It was eight years ago when Barry Sanders walked away from the Lions, despite closing in on the all-time rushing record. Perhaps the best player of his generation and one of the most exciting ever was so disillusioned with his own team that he just decided to walk away. Barry did not want to be traded as many suspected at the time; no, he wanted nothing to do with football. The Lions had killed his spirit and love of the game the same way they have killed the spirit of their fans. Why do we keep coming back for more? Shouldn't we all just be like Barry and walk away from all this misery? If only it were that easy.
Millen is perhaps the worst GM in sports. He walked out of the broadcast booth into the team's front office with no experience running anything other than his own mouth. Millen couldn't bust a grape with a sledgehammer. He obviously cannot pick a coach, having already hired and fired two of his old San Francisco cronies: Marty Mornhinweg and Steve Mariucci. Nor does Millen seem to know how to draft players, as evidenced by his selections of busts Joey Harrington, Charles Rogers and Mike Williams.

Todd Boyd, the writer of that article, is one of my idols. He is a professor at USC and has written a lot of books about the NBA where he shows the intersection of hip hop and "keeping it real" the way Sheed and Iverson do in their actions on the court and the way they deal with the media.
Boyd's an interesting guy. Great article, too. He echoes how a lot of Lions fans feel. You're disgusted but it's still YOUR team.
I would think that all fans would not expect anything until the Lions actually start winning some games. It's unbelieveable how some feel the team will be ok this season. Gotta prove it to me first.................

I've abandoned expectations for this team long time ago. I'm the same - show me or shut the h-ll up.

Good article. Back in the glory days of the Lions...I mean way back in the Bobby Layne days..you hear older folks talk about the excitement of watching Bobby take the Lions to another comeback victory. My Mom even talks about those days.
Now my "Golden Era" of the Lions was the legendary "Big Buck" Wayne Fontes years. Old Wayne would get all excited and give the fellas hugs...and then when things went bad he'd get that hangdog look on his face.

It's sick sick sick sick sick to think that Fontes was the most successful Lions coach in most of our lifetimes.

There's one guy who can't be put into the "owner's coach" category... you know, with the lawsuit and all.
He recorded seasons of ---------5-11, 5-11, 6-10, and 7-9 with Barry Sanders at running back...........
His other 4 seasons were 12-4, 10-6, 10-6, and 9-7......with Barry Sanders at running back...........
This seems very inconsistent to have such a wide spread of seasonal success with the same core of players. Overall, during his 8 full seasons. He was 64-64. Consistently, inconsistent. Just like the Lions.

8 seasons....64-64....what a great run Coach Fontes had with the Lions! The Run and Shoot! Great concept...didn't do much for time of possession or helping Barry run but it sure was exciting. That's all I want. Something at least mildly exciting.

As long as we can summarize our entire game plan with a catchy phrase, I'll be happy.
Stop, drop, and roll. Something like that.

Don't forget Wayno won a playoff game.
Will the Millen Group win one? If so, when?

Which do you think will happen first? Lions win the Super Bowl or an Al Quada member is elected President of the United States?

That's a tough one.

Al Quada will at least become a breakfast cereal before the Lions win the Super Bowl...........Both with and without raisins........

I'm thinking this is the year they turn it around. So...when I was in Vegas for SL, I put $20 on the Lions to win the NFC. Remember who did this when the the end of the year rolls around. (40 to 1 odds):pound:

Lets look at the positives. Lions used to be a dark horse before. Nobody every knew which game they were going to win and which game they were going to lose. At least Millen brought clarity to the situation.
