View Full Version : Ford: Millen wasn't -- and isn't -- in jeopardy

Detroit Lions president Matt Millen, as it turns out, wasn't in any danger of losing his job last year and it doesn't appear he'll be in any jeopardy this season either.
Team owner William Clay Ford granted his first interview in two years on Thursday, the opening day of the Lions' training camp. Ford said that despite the team's 3-13 record he saw improvement and a brighter future and didn't consider making any changes.
Ford made it clear that the angry cries from upset fans haven't fallen on deaf ears, but Ford said he believes in Millen.
"I think the fact that he's such a competitor and he wants to win as much as any of us do,'' he said. "I think when he came in, he had the same spirit, don't get me wrong, but I think there was a learning curve in there about being GM and the decisions he had to make. I don't think he anticipated those and that's taken awhile. I think now, he fits in very nicely.''
Ford agreed with the possibility that his personal fondness for Millen might be clouding his judgment in professional terms.
"It's possible. But I think if you like somebody and you believe in the same things that they believe in, I don't know what other yardstick to put against it,'' he said.
Now, this guy doesn't look crazy, but he's behaving like a lunatic. What other yardstick do you need when your team is 24-72 over several seasons and is a joke around the league.

Well, he likes Millen...and apparently that's the most important thing. I think it's great that they are pals.

That actually reminds me of the Owner-Coach connection. All I have to say that "He's a good person".

Can't we all just get along?

Just because Ford likes Millen and he thinks that the Marinelli and Millen like each other does not mean winning will result from this mutual admiration society. Somebody needs to show Ford the trophy's and banners over at the Palace, the Joe and even at Comerica that the Pistons, Shock, Wings and Tigers have amassed over the past 10 years.
I am willing to bet this being the 50th anniversary of the last Lions championship, no one can even find that trophy from 1957. Wake up Mr. Ford and sell the team to somebody or group that cares about winning and not just about keeping the management team in happy relationships. :)

Comm'on Dre, you know Millen lets Ford sniff and hold his 3 rings. That's all the passification Ford needs.
Ford may be wearing one of those rings, around the house.

Unlike most fans, I'm completely satisfied with WCFs viewpoint. We finally have an explaination for why this miserable excuse for a professioinal sports organization is where it is. WINNING NEVER MATTERED. I'm cool with that. There are plenty of other sporting diversions. Out.

That's exactly the point. I don't know why fans keep coming to the games. Winning will only be important when the $$$ stop trickling in. When the Tigers were bad the stadium was empty. But the Ford field is packed every time and people come to see the garbage that Ford keeps throwing out there year after year.

The last game I saw live was 4 years ago. I would go to 3 or so games each year.
First I stopped spending money, then I stopped making myself sick watching on TV. Now, I listen on the radio while I do chores or work on Sundays.
Defense mechanism.

See, I told you that it wasn't Millen's fault for this mess.

How many games did you see when you weren't living?

Assuming two rascals such as you and I can sneak past St. Peter, I'll let you know up in the big show. :)

Americans won't tolerate a loser. So why do I/we?
Ford was not allowed near the Ford Motor Company because he is incompetent. His brother, Hank the Deuce kept him away from the family business. He bought the Detroit Lions in the early 60s to give him something to do. As somebody who grew up in a large mansion, he is very lonely for friendship. His goal has always been to buy at least one friend to work for the Detroit Lions. I'm sure Millen knew this going in. Both him and Wayne Fontes are the biggest friends that William Clay Ford has had in the last 40 years. It's easy to say that you care about winning, but that's all Ford has produced in his 50 years of ownership.
