Yeah Linwood, are you the commish? If so, you will need to be more helpful. Ask Jammer for some pointers. ie. how to get yourself the number 1 pick in the draft and get away with it.

I won't be joining novice though.

linwood
10-01-2007, 09:41 PM
The league will be at Yahoo. I'll give you the number and password if you send me a PM. I think there is room for 8 teams.

Format will be head to head. If you played in the Novice League last year, it should be the same. I may change the number of trades and moves allowed, but that is still up for debate.

If we can get everyone online, I would like to do a live draft. Right now, the draft is set for Sunday, October 28th, at 3:00pm EST. We can move it, or discuss options depending om peoples schedules.

I think this league should be for the amateur or the incompetent. I fall in the latter category. If you have a little banner under your name that says "fantasy champ", this isn't the league for you. If you played last year and finished in the bottom 4... welcome back. :)

If it's anything like the last few years, this should be lots of fun if you show up to play.

The winner this year will receive a basketball related prize provided by... me. Probably a book, bobblehead, or some other Pistons Basketball related item.

I really encourage you guys who have not played before or who have not had a lot of success in fantasy leagues in the past to sign up for Linwood's league. Don't be afraid to learn. This is the perfect time and it's not difficult in the least.

Also, I'm not certain how many other leagues the forum will be having this year, so competition could be tough to get in them.

Linwood, if a franchise becomes available or you add expansion teams I would like to play. I did place 3rd last year by micromanaging my roster on an hourly basis!:) Plus Slippy was on a cross country trip and unable to make critical roster changes. All I'm trying to say is I'm no pro, but I really want to play fantasy basketball on pf.com. I passed up pf.com baseball and football this year so as not to dilute my competitive focus! Also, I like the idea of 8-10 teams only, so as not to dilute the top 140 pool of talent. I spent way too much time analyzing statistics on guys that didn't play that much. Anyway, just let me know. If not, I'll play on yahoo public league but I'd rather play on pf.com. And if there is an advanced league, I'm not ready for prime time yet. Thanks.

P.S. Linwood, I just wrote out my list of must-see-probably-the-last-season-in-Seattle Sonics games. After this season, we'll have to drive to Portland to see the Pistons. What a drag. Anyway, I'll pm you. Maybe we can get the best available $15 seats on some of them.

Its been 2 years, give the Advanced a shot?

I am considering restricting the Novice League to those who have never played, or those who finished in the bottom half of Novice League last year. (Or both years, for that matter)

If you are a great fantasy player, go hang with the Pros in the Advanced League. It will start soon, I'm sure.

I'm also considering limiting the number of moves you can make with your roster. I'm not sure the number, but I'm thinking about 20. This would give you 1 player a week to cover multiple injuries. This would be more like a real basketball team. You only see the Anthony Goldwires and Ronald Duprees of the league when a team is suffering from injury.

This number wouldn't include trades. I think the trades are the best part of the game, and really increase the interaction of the owners. Unlimited trades. And the trade deadline may be moved back as well.

Let me know if you have any opinions on these options, and like the real commisioner, I will pretend to give them due consideration.

Hmmm. Well Linwood I could see why you might want to do that. At least the part of limiting the league to less experienced or less successful Novice experience.

It seems that we may need an Intermediate League in that case. Or else play in Advanced or a non pf.com League.

I'm not crazy about limiting the moves. I think half the fun of fantasy is trolling for that guy who can give you the stats you need to round out that week. Thank you J.R. Smith for the treys. Thank you Brevin Knight for the assists coming back from injury. Thank you...yes I'm going to say it...Kwame Brown for the offensive rebounds and the shooting percentage at a critical juncture. LOL.

You're the commish. Just let me know whether I'm in or out. The Advanced League probables scare the hell out of me, but I could give it a whirl I guess. :):) I bought my new pack of eight colored highlighters and I've got butcher block paper on the walls and I'm starting my draft research this weekend.

8 highlighters? Butcherblock paper on the walls for charts and stats? Draft research 22 days before the draft? Girl, you belong in the advanced league!:pound:

As far as the number of moves you can make: I'm not sure how limited I want it to be, but I am going to set some limits. Your strategy of trolling the lists every hour is a winning one, but I believe it may be too advanced for the Novice League. Down here in the JV I think it's more about trash talking and horse trading as you learn how to play the game. That being said, if you are allowed 20 or 30 moves outside of trades, you could always save them up for the end of the season push, or use them to get out of the gates early. Or you could just hone your trading skills.

You seen those movies where they try to catch a serial killer and they have all that stuff on the walls...yeah, she's like that.

I wouldn't mind getting at least 1 bench spot. Gives you a little flexibilty and some cushion when a guy gets hurt...which for me means 4 slots...but I'll take one. or 3:sssh:

You see how you need 2 C's? I'm going to corner the market on C's grabbing 5 out of the top 15 making everyone else play Adonal Foyle and Brendan Haywood. BWHAHAHAHHA. ok maybe not

linwood
10-06-2007, 12:43 PM
I was thinking about 2 or 3 bench players that you could carry at all times, and then a limit of 20 or 30 moves from the free agent pool during the season. This would allow you to get that one 3 point shooter, but limit your ability to field a different team each week to beat the categories.

Any thoughts?

The only thing I would add is that I really wouldn't advise doing the co-owner thing. It's generally just not necessary and you'll want the autonomy. You may miss out on picking up a "hot" (not that kind, Kim) free agent because you needed to wait for your co-owners approval.

Fantasy sports are very easy to learn. Honest. If you need help, most people will always give you advice.

one word of advice if you haven't played before...the default list will probably draft better than you. Take it from me who picked Emeka Okafor in the first round (like 11th overall) or BBjay who nabbed Darko with the #2 overall pick...just weed out the injured guys.

again, if you have a question on ranking, you can pm Darth, jammer, motown, roscoe36 or me. roscoe and I are still in novice but if we wanted to stab you in the back to climb a notch in the standings, we'd play advanced:gun1:

I'm o.k. either way - just want to make sure the master sprocket statistical drafting roster is properly weighted. Multi-dimensional scaling can be touchy about those negative categories and I have to make sure I'm handling them properly.

I have a more complicated question coming up soon. I just can't figure out how to explain it. :)

You know Linwood I like your Red Auerbach draft strategy. It's good to go into these high stakes events relaxed, and to start relaxing days ahead of time.

linwood
10-20-2007, 04:53 PM
Just a reminder that draft time is less than 24 hours away now. If you haven't done it already, make sure that you pre-rank your players in case there are any problems in the live draft. The draft lotto happens 30 minutes before the draft begins, so you will have a few minutes to plan your strategy accordingly.

Week one matchups look like this:

Linwood vs. Mikhail
This will be my third year in the Novice League. Over the past two years, I've learned quite a bit about the ins and outs of fantasy basketball. For instance, drafting a guy who can deliver a good hard foul isn't as important as you might think.

What Mikhail lacks in experience, he makes up for in compulsive research. This offseason, BC kyiv compiled scouting reports and film on nearly every team in the league. This man is like a computer. Or maybe a librarian. Or possibly a truck driver. I'm not sure, I've never met him.

Winner: Linwood.

The Sausage King vs. Luke Slippywalker
This is a hard matchup for me to evaluate, since neither of these teams actually has any players. Based on Slippy's teams of the last couple of years, I expect him to draft Ray Allen, Grant Hill, Alan Houston, Pau Gasol, Dwyane Wade and any other ankle-surgery-havin, back spasming, broken-wheel-allstar available. Here's a hot tip for you Slippy: The much improved Delonte West put up some pretty impressive numbers at the end of the season last year. Since his arrival in Seattle, he has been on the injury list throughout the preseason with "nagging back pains".

I don't really remeber much about Abe's team from last year... except that they probably beat me.

Winner: Abe Froman and The Sausage Kings.

Roscoe36 vs. Aurora
This year Kim has vowed to actually make an effort in Fantasy League. With butcher paper and magic markers at hand, it will be all numbers this year. Just like Trick Daddy, Kim loves the kids, but I don't expect her to become distracted by some young NBA "hottie" that shoots a horrible FG%. Not this year. The Lights are in it to win it, and I expect this team to be near the top all season.

I predict that Roscoe36 has the best draft in the Novice League. Just like one of his heroes, Isaiah Thomas, Roscoe really has an eye for talent. Look for the Sandwich Microwaves to dominate at the beginning of the season, only to trade away most of their talent in an effort to reduce payroll. Hit me up when your ready to unload.

Winner: Draw. This should be a battle royale.

I'll give you the other two matchups as soon as I figure out who Jarvis Hayes crew and the Basketballers are.

I'm Jarvis Hayes crew and Basketballers is my 13-year old son. My son started playing fantasy sports this summer with baseball. He is playing football now, so this will be his third league. He beat Roscoe in baseball, but then again, who didn't? Actually, he finished 3rd out of 10 teams. My experience is about the same. My son has been doing lots of research, including participating in online mock drafts. I haven't done any research, but I'll be on my game for the draft tomorrow. :)

Draft in less than an hour. If you are doing the live draft, you should log into Yahoo and run the "test your system" option.

Good luck to everyone, but not as much luck as me.

How is it that these corrupt commissioners keep getting the first pick? First Jammer & now Linwood. In my league, I got the last pick. Dead last.

So either you guys better tell me how to set the cheat controls or I am reporting you to the Better Fantasy Bureau.

I had the number one pick last year too.

Honestly with the snake system, I think I would rather have the number 4 or 5 pick.

So Linwood...what did you decide ultimately? How many moves do we get? Did it come out to one per week or something? Is there a place on Yahoo site that I can find it? I can't find it. I have to start rationing myself early. LOL.

Wow, good thing Darth finally made the move to Advanced League, otherwise his 40 moves would be gone after week 3.

Linwood, do you think we should add an IR position to the roster in our league settings? The team size is pretty small, so it would be nice to have the IR slot if a guy goes down for any length of time.

I concur.

Do you mean open a 12th spot so you can pick up a free agent? I'd be good with that as long as the FA plays the same position as the guy on IR and is automatically waived when the guy returns. I think there should be other stipulations also: no trading the FA and no waiving him to pick up someone else...once you acquire him, he stays on the roster until the IR returns. Just my thots.

I'm not sure how Yahoo would manage something like this. If we did a IR with these stipulations, I think it would have to be on the honor system. Let's discuss it a little more and see what we come up with.

I forgot that the NBA no longer has an Injured List like other sports. I guess people will just have to decide if they want to keep injured players in their Bench spots.

I would suggest against it. Not worth the headache. IR doesn't exist in the NBA any more anyway. You are better off just adding a roster spot.

Mo...any suggestions on how to draft for it?

Slippy

we should leave things as they are. if we wanted to change things, it should have been done before the draft. the number of moves and roster spots were meticulously calculated by linwood to maximize fun. if you add a roster spot, you're going to see people use that as an extra rotation...nothing minimizes the effect of an injury

MotownPride

Not knowing your settings...

I would say that typically in smaller leagues I've added a roster spot for the following reasons.

1) Eliminates the effectivesness of stacking ones roster during the week with waiver acquistions by diluting the talent pool

2) Allows more cushion for holding injured players.

What I've done in the past is placed all of the players on waivers prior to the season's start and then added the roster position. This way waiver priority determines who gets dibbs on the free agent pool.

I normally roll with 4 bench spots, but in advanced I dropped it down to 3 because of the number of GMs involved.

Have fun. I'm sure it will be enjoyable regardless of what route you take.

Sorry I haven't really replied to this earlier. I've been considering the roster spots, and I am comfortable with adding another bench player or two. Since we only have 10 teams, I don't think it would waster things down too much, and it would offer a little more flexibility for setting your lineups during the week.

The season starts tomorrow, so if there is a consensus that we would like to carry another player or two, I can start that next Monday.

Ok wait, I know the season starts today, but Novice League Matchup Scoring doesn't start until Week Two? On our League home page it says:

Your league will begin with the games played starting Week 2.

Can you confirm Linwood that this is so? Also when it comes to adding a few bench players, how would we do that? Through the waiver wire? I'd be more in favor of adding another utility player so we could have 10 active. But I'd also welcome a bench player or two. It would help alot for those nights when somehow you end up with only four players out of nine playing. How would we draft for the extra players? First come first serve on the waiver wire on a given day or time?

I'm also fine with how it is. :) Seriously.

Arrrrgh! I forgot to change this to week one.

Looks like the first week is the preseason! :bs::nopompom:

I guess this is probably a good thing for Mikhael, but a bummer for the rest of us. I tried to change it, but it's too late.

As for the bench player, I guess if we decide to go that route, it will work with your waiver position. If there is league consensus, we will open up two more spots on the bench, and we can all grab our players in waiver order.

The scores for the first week of the season won't count, because I forgot to set it on time. This is bad for the league, because they have to wait a week before the games actually count. It's good for you, because the 9-0 loss you suffer at the hands of the Mad Ants won't go on your permanent record.

Welcome to Fantasy Trash Talk.

I noticed that we didn't start until Week 2, so I didn't bother with roster setting yet. It's too bad this week is off because I have several guys with injuries and suspensions. I guess Laim's Lane Enforcers will have to start the season at full strength.

Horrors!

Duncan goes for 24 and 13 with three assists and a block and shoots 67% from the field and it doesn't count??!!?? Alas, I guess it does mean I don't have to swallow the 57% shooting from the foul line.

I'm o.k. with the number of players we have.

I'm okay if we stay with the same roster size, too. Initially, I was thinking we needed to add an IR spot, but then I remembered that the NBA does have an IR list anymore. If we did add another Bench spot, we should do it in the next day or two.
