Ok, I'll get the ball rolling.

I just checked in on my team and saw that my goalie, Rick DiPietro was having a bad game having given up 4 goals by the half way point of the 2nd period in a 5-4 game against the Sabres.

I thought to myself, "Crap, this is going to negate the good game that Khabibulin put in last night." Then I thought, "I wonder how Bezeach's goalies are doing tonight?". So I decided to take a quick peek.

To my pleasant surprise, Bezeach's only goalie playing tonight just happens to be the guy on the other end of the rink from DiPietro, Ryan Miller, who has now given up 6 goals to Rick's 4.

So basically, I just wanted to thank Bezeach for drafting a crappier goalie than I did. :stirthepot:

Huh? What is this? The powder puff smack thread, or something? That smack was weaker than one of Hossa's slap shots. Oh. I'm sure your comment really stung Bezeach. Is that the best you can do? :pound:

Jammer, I should suspend you from the league for putting together such a crap team...but I like those easy automatic wins, so you can stay. I wonder what league Laimbeer's dogs are playing in this year. They beat Roscoe in baseball, but I think you can handle them.:cold:

I started talking smack last week when I got two power play goals from Cammalleri in London. Where have you guys been?

Nice that you finally got a thread going, Jammer!

With Brodeur, Hasek, and Roloson, my goal keepers should make me a contender all year.

See you'all in the finals!!!

:gun1::gun1::gun1:

P.S. I had DiPietrio last year. He was a dog all year. Good luck, Jammer

Hey Tater, is that you? Glad to see you were able to take your eyes off the waiver wire long enough to post in the thread that you should have created yourself a few weeks ago.

Better be careful though, don't stick around too long. Bill has pulled out to the early transaction lead on you. He's up 6-4. You're a bit off your normal pace. You feeling ok?

Anyway, I'll let you get back to your Stat Tracker. Nice talking with you again.

Woody. Your team looked awesome when you drafted them and they are coming out strong. Nice goalies you got there.

I hope you win it all this year so I can return the favor and complain all summer about how you cheated.:stirthepot: But I won't get that chance because I'll win it all...as always. :pound:

Oh, come on, guys. A lot of this is sheer luck. You have a few top people that are going to produce, and the rest is crap shoot. You don't know who is going to have what kind of season. A guy could get on a roll and and up with 35-40 goals. The same guy could go through a dry spell and end up with 20-25 goals. There are too many things that we can't control.

PF.com has a shed?

Where is it?

Why have I never heard about it before?

Why wasn't I invited?

Does it cost anything to join?

What if I bring some chips and dip, then can I come?

Is it like the Fight Club? No one talks about the shed.

Maybe Los Vegas? Whatever happens in the shed, stays in the shed.

Is it anything like my wife's dog house? I've spent plenty of time there.

Certainly, one of my goals this year is to win the most transactions title over Darth. Some might question moves like I had yesterday when I picked up Dmitri Kalinin only to drop him 5 minutes later. Little do they know the true genius behind the strategerizing.

Jammer, Habs look good. Yeah, they've been playing well of late. Nice to see them putting the puck in the net consistently. They're really a special teams team, they're excellent on the PP and PK, but they don't score too many even strength goals.

My team struggled a bit the first 3 weeks. Tampa played 6 games in 3 weeks.

Now, the play a whopping 6 games in 9 days. So you guys who played me early got lucky.

My best defenseman is probably back tomorrow after missing the entire seson with a freak hand injury(a skate fell off his locker and severed some tendons).

I think that was a move just to keep the Roster Move Title within reach. You're ahead 14-12 as we speak.

Either that or he's just in training for the playoffs, when he has to be in top physical and mental shape so that he doesn't pull something while making his 8 daily roster transactions.

I can't believe my team is playing like this. I thought I'd kick butt with my guys finally getting some games in...but NOOOOOOO.

I suppose I should get off my butt and do something since I'm the commissioner. Maybe a blurb on each team or the matchups or something.

OK,

How about:

Bezeach: Same as last year. Kicking butt out of the gate. Fantastic numbers. He'll disappear around the playoffs...like always.

Jammer's team: It sucks

Roscoe's team: It sucks too

How was that.

Next time I'll do an in depth analysis on Mikhail's team and Bill Laimbeer's team.

Hey...What the hell happened to Woody? Oh well, I may as well do his teams analysis while I'm at it or he will whine..It sucks as bad as the others.

Ok, now don't say I do nothing as commissioner. At least I started the season on time (Don't tell Linwood I said that). :pound::stirthepot:

A couple of "fun facts" about our good friend Darth Tater:

- Darth Tater's initials are actually O.C.D.

- Darth Tater never tips. Instead he puts the money into a little jar entitled "Stat Tracker Fund".

- Darth Tater actually changed the date of his wedding because it conflicted with his league's live draft.

- While he didn't invent the idea of "rent a player", Darth Tater has employed the strategy so often in fantasy sports that the move has been nicked named "Tatering".

- Likewise, the expression "You've been Tatered" is used when a fantasy sports owner gets beat in a head-to-head match-up by someone who has employed the "rent-a-player" strategy.

You really should get out more Darth.

But one of the officers said that “his demeanor completely changed once the cameras were not in sight,” shifting in a matter of minutes from the kicking-and-screaming coiner of the new catchphrase “Don’t Tase me, bro” to “laughing and being lighthearted.” Then, they say, he asked them whether the news media would be on hand when he arrived at the police station.

We need to liven this league up. It's been about 3 weeks since the last post.

Bezeach is leading the pack and making some moves to keep his team strong.

Mikhail was making about 20 moves per week...until he accidentally dropped a great player in his haste. Now...nothing. Both he and Laimbeer aren't playing like rookies.

You've got your top 5 teams and bottom 5, but any from the bottom could easily make their way to the top with a good week, and vice versa.

My team is really struggling and I can't figure out why. I have basically the same team I won the ship with last year. I've been running into some hot goalies so even when I play well I lose those cats (I think Nabby had 2 shutouts last week and two from Luongo this week). OUCH!

We need more smack talk. Come on Woody...Jammer...where are you? I'm kind of reluctant to talk as much smack since I'm commissioner. Maybe that's silly.

Oh...for next year I have some ideas...

Using GWG (Game winning goals) again as a stat...even though it's usually just luck (It's not always the last goal that is the game winner).

Also using Shots on goal (a new default cat in Yahoo that replaced GWG this year.

Also I might use penalty minutes. It's dumb...but I think more cats liven the leagues.

Also, in baseball we used weekly lineups. I thought it was pretty neat. If I add a couple of roster slots (which I can given all the surplus talent in the small league) then we can still have lots of guys playing that week even though guys don't play every day like in baseball.

If it stays daily, I'll put a reasonable cap on how many moves we can make during the year...maybe 75.

Any feedback?

Woody

Tater:

I'd talk more smack if my team wasn't so lousy. My two top wingers (Semin and Cheechoo) have done absolutely nothing so far. I keep holding on to them hoping they'll get going, but so far, nothing!

Broduer had a bad month, and Hasek is not doing well either. NO goalies, NO wingers, NO win!!

I'm starting to swap out players now. I check the league page to see who you and Bezeach have dropped and then I pick them up. Your trash is my treasure!!

I actually nosed you out last week thanks to a Brodeur shutout, but I didn't feel like crowing over it.

So far, Parise had been my best pickup. and Arnott is good too. And I hope Vanek gets going soon also. I've got way too many guys dragging anchor.

I don't care for most of the suggestions for next year. Most of those stats are pure luck and not very meaningful. I liked the faceoff stat last year when I had Brind'Amour, but not this year after Laimbeer stole him from me during the draft.

You're doing just a GREAT job as commissioner. Particularly since it has been limiting your smack talking! :)

I don't care for most of the suggestions for next year. Most of those stats are pure luck and not very meaningful. I liked the faceoff stat last year when I had Brind'Amour, but not this year after Laimbeer stole him from me during the draft.

Yea, my draft strategy was to pick Brind'Amour and Sundin in order to have a lock in one category (faceoff wins) each week.

It appears the league is now in the bag for me. You guys are playing for second.

That was my strategy as well going into the draft. It looks like I executed my plan better than you did since I have a commanding lead in the faceoff category with 942 wins to your laughable 787 wins in 2nd place. I'm 8-0 in weekly faceoff wins, while you're 7-1 (guess who you lost to in week 4) :sssh:.

I don't have a problem with adding GWG and/or Shots next year, but you're right about penalty minutes, it's a dumb idea. :pound:

Also, in baseball we used weekly lineups. I thought it was pretty neat. If I add a couple of roster slots (which I can given all the surplus talent in the small league) then we can still have lots of guys playing that week even though guys don't play every day like in baseball.
I really liked the weekly lineups in baseball this year. It made it MUCH easier to manage my team.

If it stays daily, I'll put a reasonable cap on how many moves we can make during the year...maybe 75.

HECK TO THE YES!!!! I'd put it even lower, at say 50 for the season. That is my BIGGEST turn off in fantasy sports, especially in this league.

Not so much about people picking up extra guys to get a numerical advantage (although that sucks as well), but because on the rare occasion that I do want to pick someone up due to injury or under performance, EVERYONE IS ON FREAKING WAIVERS. So you can't get anyone of value for the next day because you have to wait for them to clear waivers. It is VERY annoying.

I was going to say something about this a few weeks ago, but the transactions really started to slow down. Fifty moves should be plenty for an entire season, IMO. I think the most I've ever made in any league in any sport is around 25-30 or so. It just takes the fun out of the league for me.

Edit: I checked just for fun and the most moves I've made was in last year's PF.com hockey league, when I made 37 moves in 23 weeks, most of those coming in the playoff rounds when I had no other choice because my opponent was Tatering (http://www.pistonsforum.com/predictions-contests-games/7037-pistons-forum-com-trivia-28.html#post108380) me.

Jammer's analysis of next year doesn't make sense.

He says he likes weekly lineups, and then complains about having to wait several days for a guy to clear wavers. YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS!!

Personally, I did NOT like weekly lineups in baseball. A pitcher or other player gets hurt and you can't replace them for a week, thus getting stuck shorthanded.

If we went to weekly in hockey, and a guy gets hurt (and that happens A LOT), then he couldn't be replaced until the next week.

Forget the weekly lineups!! Stick with daily! Its FUN to screw around with your lineups all the time!

As far as the number of moves, any limitation would be good. Since I don't have stat wacker, I don't have all the inside dope on who's hot and who's not. I just watch the league transactions page and pick up the leftovers. A guy like Tater will run out of leftovers long before the playoffs if we limit him sufficiently. AS WE SHOULD!!!!!!!!!

I agree with Woody that it's nice to make changes mid-week to accomodate for injuries.

I agree with you Canadians (Jammer and Darth) about limiting the number of roster moves per year. It seems to take away from the game when rosters are completely overhauled from day to day.

He says he likes weekly lineups, and then complains about having to wait several days for a guy to clear wavers. YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS!!

I don't want it both ways. Either a daily league with roster limits or a weekly league. I'm not looking for both. This year's hockey league is daily, so having to wait several days for guys to clear waivers sucks. Given the # of roster moves being made on a weekly basis, it seems like anyone worth picking up is on waivers.

I've only done weekly once, which was this year's baseball league. I really liked the lower commitment level required (something retired folks like you don't have to worry about :stirthepot:).

I have no problem with daily leagues, I've been in about 2 dozen of them over the years. I agree that the biggest draw back of the weekly league was getting stuck with an injured player.

I'd be fine with either a daily or weekly league next season.

LOL, eh. OK, so say we go with daily, eh? What's a reasonable amount of moves. I don't mind not tatering, eh, and I certainly won't be tempted if I'm limited...but how many is reasonable? IMO 75 is still WAY too many roster moves. The season is approx. 23 weeks long. With 75 roster moves, that works out to 3.26 moves per week. Fifty moves would work out to 2.17 moves per week. Perhaps a compromise of 60-65?

As a side note, I can't believe that we're already talking about NEXT year's fantasy league. This season isn't even half way over yet! :pound:

Ok, no, for real now. Stop playing around. I'm good with GWG and Shots on goal (never played with this one before). I'm not a big fan of the L category. Yeah yeah, I'm a jerk. Get over it. I ain't changing!!

I don't think goalies can get offensive stats. There just weren't many cats to choose from. Most of the ones we weren't already using were pretty obscure or stupid. The shots on goal is the new default category for Yahoo. They used to use Game winning goals ,but too many people complained it was luck.

I'm sure you understand this being of the eskimo species and all, but others don't know that game winning goal is often chance.

For example:

The Wings score 4 goals to take a 5-0 lead.

The Lightning then get three goals.

Wings win 5-3. Whoever got the 4th goal gets the game winner even though at the time it wasn't a big deal. So it's kind of random a lot. But it's kind of a fun stat, so I prolly should have kept it. I don't know.

Also, I guess I'll see if I can throw in two more positions (utility if they have it). That way we get more action.

You Canadians are all nuts!

Upon further review, I think daily lineups make more sense in leagues where the teams play several games per week. In baseball, teams play every day, often 15-20 in a row. A weekly league doesn't reflect the frequency of games. Obviously a football league only plays once per week so a weekly change makes sense. Hockey plays 2-4 times per week, and a weekly change doesn't adequately reflect the frequency of the games. (END OF SERMON).

Shots on goal sounds O.K., but is more good or bad?? Detroit goalies always face fewer shots because their defense is so good. Weaker teams give up many more shots. So, do you chose a goalie on a weak team with a poor defense so he gets lots of shots (and loses lots of games), but your fantasy team gets extra points for having such a bum defense??:stirthepot::stirthepot:

ISN'T THIS FUN!!!:):)

So what I'm thinking based on all the feedback is:

We like:
Daily lineups
Roster limit (approx 65)
GWG

We don't like:
Shots on goal
penalty minutes
goalie losses

What am I forgetting?

Oh yeah, how about 1 day waiver periods instead of two?

Yeah, right. Like performance this year guarantees something for the next year? Also, a lot of this is pure luck. A couple of your players having an off-weak kills your chances of doing good. Also, I am not talking about swapping out the entire team, I don't mind dropping a player to pick up a goalie, but what half-decent goaltender is available at this point in time? That's the issue that I am talking about.

You would be surprised what you can pick up on waivers now and then.

But you also can consider trading for a good one. They aren't cheap, but you get what you pay for. Make some offers to your fellow GM's. Trading has been slow in our league so far.

I don't mind dropping a player to pick up a goalie, but what half-decent goaltender is available at this point in time? That's the issue that I am talking about.
You'd think that at least one of your 72 roster moves would have landed you a half decent goalie by now. :stirthepot:

You would be surprised what you can pick up on waivers now and then.
As much as it pains me, I'd have to agree with Tater. There have been some very quality starting goalies available as FAs this year. Marty Turco (a few times now), Marc-Andre Fleury (a few times now), Johan Holmqvist, Manny Legacy. I've actually been surprised with the quality of goalies available.

Not to mention currently available guys like Kolzig, Khabibulin, Mason, Hedberg, Garon, Budaj, Mike Smith, etc.

Mikhail:

Last year I got caught with a poor goalie (Cam Ward) who is playing much better this year. I drafted goalies this year early (Brodeur and Hasek), but they both have had various problems so far. Hopefully, they're better now. I was counting on getting most of the goalie points all year - we'll see.

Laimbeer drafted Brind'Amour, whom I wanted, so he could always win the face-off point.

Fact is, no one has all the guys they want (except Bezeach). He never swaps out anyone. But then, he's much smarter than the rest of us.
He's the Patriots of this league. :)

I feel that the main idea is to talk a lot of smack, and, ocassionally, beat Tater and Jammer. That's enough enjoyment in itself. :)

That's funny, I thought I was in first place. I've also made the 3rd fewest roster moves in the entire league. Hmmm....

Laimbeer drafted Brind'Amour, whom I wanted, so he could always win the face-off point.
I was going for Brind'Amour as well. I was also focusing on face-offs going into the draft. (By the way, if anyone is keeping track, I'm 10-0 on weekly faceoff wins. I have 181 more wins than Laimb, who is in 2nd.:stirthepot:)

Alright people, I'm looking to make a deal.

I need help with Goals and +/- so I'm looking to move the following players.
Langkow
Drury
Sykora
Markov

I'd be willing to do an even trade (1-for-1, 2-for-2, 3-for-3, etc.) or would be willing to package 2 or 3 of these guys for 1 in return.

Let me know if you're interested.

P.S. I'd also consider moving Marian Hossa, but the deal would have to be well worth it. I'm not going to give him away for a scrub who has good +/-.

Yeesh! Well, I've still got a good shot to pull this out in the end. The goalie stats are very close, and only a couple of offensive categories are out of my range at this point.

I think between 6 & 8 teams in our league have a legitimate shot at the title at this point, and the other teams can turn it around in no time. In a shallow league like ours, it's not difficult to improve. I thnk last year we had around four teams with a shot at being #1 in the regular season going into the last week.

I'm not too worried about where I end up as long as I make the playoffs (Obviously, however, the bye is always nice because it's one less week to have something go wrong in the playoffs against some bums like Woody or Jammer). I think the playoffs will be anyones game, with all due respect to the current leaders.

As far as the waiver position thing...that would be Mikhail you are waiting on. :gun1:

This league is weird. I got blown out by a mediocre Bill-a-cheat team, crushed a good Laimbeer squad the following week, only to come back a day later to a large deficit against your boys. Maybe it's just my team that is Jekyll and Hyde, but I'm thinking we are all just evenly matched.

I went to an Idaho Steelheads hockey game friday. It's minor league, but we had a ball. My wife & two kids went, and each kid brought along a friend. The tickets were only 10 bucks each and everyone gets a dog and drink.

The seats in the cheap section weren't bad. On the side of the goal in an arena that only seats 5,006. The teams wore the jerseys of the NHL affilliates. So It was Idaho (Dallas Stars vs. Alaska (St. Louis Blues...not Martin St. Louis, Woody:MusicBigGrin:). The Red Wings are one of the few NHL teams without an ECHL affiliate. Tampa has one, but Idaho never plays then during the regular season. I think seeing the NHL jerseys made it more exciting...I like the Steelheads ,but I somehow felt closer to an NHL team...

I've gone to about four games and always see a couple of Red Wing jerseys.

Anyhow, first period 0-0. 2nd period Idaho goes up 1-0, but with 4 seconds left in the period, Alaska gets a power play goal and goes up 2-1.

Third period, Idaho scores right away. 2-2. With 9 minutes left Alaska goes up 3-2. With about 6 minutes left...Boom Boom Boom, three goals and Idaho wins 5-3. 5 goals for Idaho means free hamburgers for everyone at Sonic's.

So with parking and everything we got a great hockey game (well, everyone but my 12 year old daughter and her friend who were walking around talking to friends all game...but at least she knew the final score).

Ok, just wanted to share.

Fantasy hockey...I'm scrapping my hardest and pulling out every trick in the book to squeak into the playoffs.

You got a couple of "elite teams (arguably) and then three more contenders (also arguably). After that I see one spot open with several weeks to play. Thing is, anyone can beat anyone on any given week. Also, one of those second tier teams could conceivably hit hard times, so maybe two spots are open.

Right now, every time is still in the hunt. Keep playing hard fellas...

Sounds like a great time Darth. Are there many fights in the ECHL?

We have an OHL (Ontario Hockey League) team here called the Windsor Spitfires. It's been a number of years since I've been to a game. The fighting started to get out of hand, IMO.

For sure. I usually see a couple fights per game. I love the fights which is odd because I hate boxing. I also hate it when I see guys using their sticks or making dirty hits...

I remember the Windsor Spitfire from my days in Michigan...

I don't have a problem with some fighting, within the context of the game. But the last game that I went to, it was with my wife (girlfriend at the time) and it was just rediculous. Every time the puck was dropped, the gloves would come off and everyone on the ice would square off. The third period was insane.

The saying "I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out" is unfortunately all too true in a lot of cases. It gives the game a black eye (literally and figuratively), IMO.

Yeah, they certainly over do it at times with the fisticuffs. I also don't like it when the team sends it's goon out to mess with a skill player.

If I miss the hockey playoffs I have nobody to blame but myself for making dumb game day calls. I rarely get a shutout, and the goalie I benched (for fear of losing other cats) is 6 minutes away from a shutout. This isn't the first time I've done that. When I decide to play a guy in a close contest, he gives up 5 goals.:frusty: It's only one point, but they are adding up.

Yea! :party2: My benched goalie gave up a goal with 44 seconds left in the game. LMAO. So I didn't lose anything. In fact, I would have been mad had I played him...

My cousin works the concessions at Spits games. I love the fighting, although I haven't been to a game in several years.

Back in the NHL...that Crosby injury has got to hurt Superstarov. I can't be too happy about it, though, even though he is the team I am chasing.

OK...enough NHL. I was thinking of some shots to take at Roscoe & Jammer. I was going to tell them that the U.S. and Canada are the only two bordering countries (to my knowledge) never to have engaged in battle. I was going to say that they were trying hard to change that. But then it occurred to me...Does Canada even have an army? Seroiusly? I guess they don't need one because basically, you hit them, you hit us...but do they? Pardon my ignorance...

To answer your question, yes we do have an army, but no we don't really need one. We Canadians make love not war. The 60's never stopped up here.

The only time we ever have to use our military is when you Americans piss someone off and we have to go in and clean up the mess.

Canadian Forces are more for peace keeping and humanitarian missions than military aggression. We're like the Larry Brown Pistons. Known more for our defense than our offense and always underrated.

Sadly, that is how a lot of people in Canada and around the world feel about our armed forces. We basically walk behind the horse and sweep up the droppings.

HEY!!!

I WANT TO FILE A COMPLAINT!

TATER is back to his old tricks of swapping out players by the truck-load!

He's trying to steal a win over me, but it's not working. And it's not even the playoffs yet. He's in a complete panic mode half-way through the season.:gun1::gun1:

NOW, with whom do I file my complaint?? The Comissioner???:pound::pound:

That crap is expensive! My wife is into scrapbooking. It's so inefficient too. All that time, money and effort and you only get a couple of pictures on the page! She always tells me "That's not the point".

I just use a digital camera, save the pics to the computer and then never get them developed.
