SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) -- Even by the standards established at No. 9 Washington State in recent years by coaches Dick and Tony Bennett, Saturday's win was something else.
The Cougars beat overmatched Mississippi Valley State 71-26, the fewest points they have given up in a game since the Truman administration.

This was a great game. We were putting the fear into the Tar Heels for a while there. Dickie V admitted he had to call up BYU early that morning to get some info about the team because he had only prepared for Louisville. He had to throw all that away when the Cougars beat them the night before. This is great exposure for BYU and a great confidence booster as well. Williams steadies No. 6 Louisville against Old Dominion

On Nov 19th they were ranked 6th by ESPN. This was before this last week in which they played three games; Old Dominion and Las Vegas whom they beat and BYU whom they lost to. They are now ranked 10th by ESPN. So ESPN moved them down 4 positions in the ranking this last week, not up. BYU is now in the top 25.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Darren Collison and Alfred Aboya practiced without pain Friday and will play when No. 2 UCLA hosts No. 8 Texas on Sunday.
Collison scored 14 points in his season debut Wednesday against George Washington after missing the first six games because of a sprained left knee.

Aboya broke a bone under his right eye last Friday, but returned to score six points Wednesday. The Bruins' starting lineup will be a game-time decision.

Guard Michael Roll is questionable for Sunday, although he practiced Friday. Roll has yet to play this season after he tore the plantar fascia, or connective tissue that supports the arch, in his left foot during preseason practice.


UCLA said it has issued credentials to 39 scouts for the game, with 29 of the NBA's 30 teams expected to attend.
Which team will be missing? Probably a team without a first round pick in 2008.

OREM, Utah (AP) -- Jeremiah Dominguez had 19 points to lead Portland State to a 60-53 overtime win over Utah Valley State on Saturday night.

The Vikings (5-3) started the overtime period with a 6-0 run to help themselves to the victory.

Portland State tied the game with 17.4 seconds left when Andre Murray made a 3-pointer to even the score at 47.

The Wolverines (3-4) had a chance to win in regulation, but Joe Walker missed a two-footer with one second left.

No, UVSC is a public school, but it is in Orem, a 10-minute drive north of BYU in Provo, and a very large percentage of the students are LDS. Incidentally, UVSC is in the process of becoming a university, which should happen July 1st of 2008.

Since it ain't the sixties anymore, and hasn't been for almost 40 years I guess it is better for a school to have a very large percentage of LDS students as opposed to LSD students. LOL

Grinnell's Arseneault sets NCAA assists record with 34

In a 151-112 Division III victory over North Central University of Minnesota, the guard breaks record of 26.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- David N. Arseneault shattered the NCAA assists record when he had 34 in Grinnell College's 151-112 victory over North Central University of Minnesota in a Division III game Saturday.

The record of 26 was set in 1989 by Robert James of Division III Kean University. The Division I record of 22 was achieved by three players, including current Dallas Mavericks Coach Avery Johnson at Southern University in 1988 and Sherman Douglas of Syracuse in 1989.

The coach said the total could have been higher: Grinnell made only 23 of 86 three-point shots off Arsenault's passes.




David Arseneault '09 shattered the NCAA record for single-game assists regardless of division (see related story) with 34, breaking the previous mark of 26 established in 1989 by Robert James of NCAA Division III Kean on March 11, 1989. The record in Division II is 25 and the mark in Division I is 22.


He also scored 22 points, while John Grotberg '09 (pictured) erupted for 49 points with the aid of 14 3-pointers. Keith Chamberlain '08 had a huge game, tallying 39 points and grabbing 14 boards. Also in double figures was Bobby Long '09 with 12 points to go along with four steals.

Duke-Pittsburgh generating plenty of December buzz

I caught Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon on his cell phone as he was riding with his players en route to the airport Wednesday afternoon. I had called, naturally, to get his thoughts on Thursday night's matchup with No. 6 Duke at Madison Square Garden. Apparently, I wasn't the only one. "Everybody's been calling me and talking about it," Dixon said. "For a game in December, it's been unbelievable."

3. Is DeJuan Blair ready for his close-up?
4. Can Pitt limit Duke's transition opportunities?

Rather than start a new thread for each college guy like I did with Weaver, I thought maybe it was better to put all comments about whoever under this thread.

Anyway.

I finally got a chance to see Beasley the Beast (BTB) play yesterday. I saw of of KSU game against OSU.

To start with OSU is not very good and this is only one game.

Some quick observations about BTB

1. Great nose for the ball, especially on the defensive boards.
2. Not as aggressive going to the offensive glass
3. Nice midrange shot which he can catch and shoot well in rhythm.
4. Plays down low a lot with his back to the basket and is real aggressive and going to the rack mostly with spin moves
5. He did not put the ball on the floor and dribble when he had the rock on the outside. This is definitely something to follow up on. More about this below
6. He has a horrible habit of dribbling once before after the catches the ball in the low post before he turns and shoots. This will kill him in the NBA as he will never get away with dribbling on a post up in the restricted area or close to it. They will steal it from him more often than not.
7. He showed some good pass anticipation on defense knocking the ball away or stealing it more than once.
8. His man to man defense is like most college freshmen; i.e., needs a lot of work to say the least, notwithstanding #7 above.
9. He made some good crisp passes to teammates, when they cut without the ball.

I clearly want to see him play more, but off of the initial game that I saw I have concern about whether he can dribble drive penetrate. Now it could have just been the OSU defenses so he took what they gave him and therefore did not dribble drive so I will have to see more of him. On the other hand since he plays mostly down low on the block he may not need to have this skill to succeed in the NBA.

He seems best suited to the #4 as far the NBA goes. He is listed at 6'9" 235 but he did not appear to me to be 6'9". Maybe 6'8 at the most.

Having said that and keeping in mind he is only a freshman, I like his game at this point more than Durant's when Durant was at Texas.

I haven't seen Gordon or Rose play yet.

Right now I would rank

1. Love (Is strong, tough and has all the fundamentals down to a tea)
2. Mayo - Will be able to take over and control a game since he handles the rock.
3. Beasley - Tough down low with a nice mid range shot.

I don't think that any team that drafts any of these guys can go wrong. However, I do also have some concern about Beasley's facial demeanor and if it will affect his desire to succeed at the next level. It just seemed kind of droopy? What does this have to do with anything. I don't know. It just struck me as a little odd and a bit of a turn off especially when he was interviewed.

There are a gazillion college games per week. I thought it was funny to have a thread tracking all of these games. I just picked a random game. I do have a friend that works at UVSC, though.

BYU positively SMOKED UNLV here in Provo last night (2-16-08), 74-48, with yours truly in the audience. This avenged a 29-point loss to UNLV last month in Vegas. BYU improved to 20-5, 9-1 MWC, and improved their home win streak to 44 games, second-longest in the country (behind Memphis).
