I figured this was worth its own thread. The Sideshow Bob contract saga will be over within the next week (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3141032): either he goes to Charlotte on a 3 year mid-level contract, or the Cavs match the offer sheet and keep him.

Hopefully he goes to Charlotte. 70% liklihood that the Cavs keep him though.

I don't remember what offers the Cavs made to him before, and the numbers in the comments on that ESPN story are all over the place, so I'll have to wait to see some decent reporting on this that summarizes the whole thing.

It seems to me that it is in the Cavs best interest to match and that is what will happen, Unless Ferry is too ticked at Varejao.
:hoops:
$6 mil is a no-brainer, and less than what the Cavs already offered.

This article (http://www.charlotte.com/sports_breaking/story/390439.html) by a Charlotte sports writer seems like a good summary of the situation.
He's worth Billups kind of money............maybe.:hoops:

But the chances of the Bobcats actually acquiring Varejao appear remote. At best, this likely becomes a favor for an agent and an effort to show the fan base that the front office is trying to do something about the lack of depth among big men.
Maybe we could trade them Nazmo and Murray for their first round pick. Right, dream on.

ESPN's latest report (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3141032) also says the Cavs are expected to match the offer.

Ric Bucher argues (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=bucher_ric&page=varejaobucher-071205) that the Cavs got played pretty badly, considering that the Sideshow will be playing elsewhere once he opts out two seasons from now, and that Cleveland will be stuck paying luxury tax for the next couple of seasons just to keep him...plus, if they want to deal him, the CBA rules (no player can be traded for the first three months after he signs a new deal) make it impossible to move him before this season's trading deadline.

An opposing view here (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/nba_experts/post/Give-Ferry-credit-for-Varejao-victory?urn=nba,56227), which says that the Cavs essentially won the stare-down.

Sideshow Bob is a poor man's Jason Maxiell.
Can you blame him for not wanting to play there.

the cavs are hosed if they match and have to go into the luxury tax, lose varejao in 2 years anyway, and have no wiggle room for contracts when they have several bad ones already

Cavs sign Varejao
by Branson Wright Wednesday December 05, 2007, 7:30 PM
Anderson Varejao became so frustrated with negotiations between the Cavaliers and his agent Dan Fegan that Varejao wasn't sure if he wanted to play in Cleveland again.
Now that the Cavs have matched Tuesday's $17 million, three-year offer made by the Charlotte Bobcats, Varejao is in a different frame of mind.
"I'm happy to be back in Cleveland and grateful to the Bobcats for their offer because that helped to get his deal done," said Varejao, who is now in Los Angeles. "I got what I wanted, so now let's forget what happened [during the negotiations] and move on."
