ESPN - Ovechkin, Capitals agree to 13-year, $124 million contract extension - NHL (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=3190712)

Washington Capitals Superstar Alexander Ovechkin becomes the NHL's first $100 million man.

I really like this kid. He is an amazing player and really seems well grounded. Ovechkin even worked as his own agent in the deal.

I loved his reaction:
"Hockey is my life," he said, shrugging, "and money is money. ... If you think about money, you stop playing hockey."

Asked what he plans to buy with his new riches, he said: "I feel I have everything."
"A front tooth," added Leonsis, noting the big gap in Ovechkin's smile.
"Maybe razor," chimed in Ovechkin, who arrived for the press conference unshaved and with a mop of uncombed hair.
At least he was wearing a suit, a change of pace from his usual attire of color-clashing outfits.
"Well," he said, "I'm still looking good."

I think this is a great deal for both sides. Your thoughts?

I think it is going to make it difficult for Caps when one player is about 15% of the total salary cap. Hockey teams are not exactly like basketball as far as number of players, so it will be tough to fill the roster. At least that's how I see it.

I wonder what % of the Cap's offense Ovechkin contributes?

He contributes a lot, but they have nobody else that can contribute on regular basis. He is the team.

13 year contract? Only in hockey, jeesh.

Sad thing is, that's not even the longest contract in the league.

Islander's goalie Rick Dipietro signed a 15 year $67.5 million contract in 2006.
