Because of all the recent scandals in PF.com fantasy sports leagues, the forum put out a directive to find an honest, fair, and dedicated commissioner who actually has some morals and integrity. Since no forum members fit that description, I have been appointed as the PF.com Fantasy Baseball 2008 commissioner.
Last year, we had a head-to-head league consisting of 10 managers. The competition was fierce, but somehow Darth:winner_first_h4h:, Webz:second:, and Roscoe:third: ended up at the top of the standings when the dust settled.
Their was a 13-year-old kid competing in his first fantasy sports league. I'm sure he must have just been lucky to beat the likes of Gazoo, Woody, and Jammer. :pound::pound::pound::pound:
Right now, I'm looking for managers. If you're interested in joining our league, please post below. It isn't as time-consuming as you might think. Plus, it should be a great time.

Oh...Bill, I forgot to tell you.
Jammer pm'd me and said to take his name off the list. He said he had to get his hair done, or something.
Roscoe also said he is iffy. He thinks he may have a date lined up this summer.
I'm not certain whether the two withdrawls are connected?

I'd love to return and defend my 2nd place from my first baseball league (now that i know all the rules), but the thing is I am planning to be traveling through South America for a large part of the season and I don't think I will have the time, dedication or internet resources to participate properly.
I'm not a part time fantasy manager, if I play, I play hard, so I don't want to take up a spot and languish at the bottom of the league. (I've got a reputation to protect as well)
Sorry Darth, looks like your task of repeating will be that much easier this season.
But don't worry, I will be back to civilisation in time to defend my Football championship. :first:

Crap! It figures.
My intentions were to stick with hockey and baseball in the immediate future (at least for the following year), but ironically you are going with football and basketball.
So much for a great rivalry...I respect your decision totally, however. If you can't give it your all...why even bother? I'm the same way.

There are certain things in life that I purposely restrict myself from doing because I know that I would get really into them. Fastasy <anything> and sports betting are both included in that.
If I did anything like this, it would be NBA fantasy, because I wouldn't have to familiarize myself with so many players. Baseball, Hockey, and Football have so many players that I don't know that I would be lost.

If you have the time and you get enjoyment out of it its possible to be successful despite not knowing any players (or the game for that matter)
I prefer fantasy Bball just because its my fav sport, I've played it longest and already know all the players, but last season I played fantasy Football and Baseball for the first time. Both were sports I didn't know anything about (being Australian) and I had heard of perhaps 3 players in both sports. But just being a stats junkie can get you a long way (in Baseball in particular). I hardly even bothered with following the sport outside of fantasy but still managed to do pretty well.
Football I got into a lot more and ended up following the league as well.
Baseball is probably one of the easier fantasy sports to play first time without knowing any players or anything. And its weekly lineups as well. Just my 2 cents.

Very well put. I agree with Webz.
I'll add that while there is a certain advantage to knowing the players it also works against you at times because of preconceived notions an owner might have. In essence, you may take a player or ignore a player due to familiarity, while just looking at the stats would lead you to a better decision. This seems to have happened to me a lot in my sophmore seasons.
We'll definitely miss seeing both of you guys if you choose to opt out.

Exactly!!! I thought I had a pretty good handle on NHL players and I am now fighting for the 9th spot, and it's not looking good. :pound:
On the other hand, I ended up autodrafting (not by choice I might add - here come the comments) in my basketball league, and now I am fighting for the 1st spot.

Okay, two things from the Commissioner:
(1) We need one more sucker manager to join our league. Let me know if you want in.
(2) I have tentatively set the draft date for Sunday, March 9 at 4:00 pm EDT. This is two weeks from yesterday. Yeah, I know. Baseball season starting already?
It seems like Sunday afternoons/evenings have had the fewest conflicts for previous fantasy drafts. March 2 seemed a little early. The Pistons play the Bulls at 8pm on Sunday, March 9 so I choose a 4:00 pm draft time.
Please let me know if you have a conflict with this date/time.

NOTE:
I just want to clarify something for anyone who has not played in a weekly league before. (Bill should have done this but he is not only a corrupt commissioner but he is also a totally incompetent commissioner...but I digress).
Your lineups for the upcoming week must be set BEFORE Monday. So set them on Sunday (or earlier if you must). If you wait until Monday, the system will not allow you to set your lineup and you will be stuck with last weeks settings. This confused a couple of people last year.
Any questions...see Bill. :pound:

Actually, "Weekly Setting" of rosters is nice (versus "Daily") because it keeps you from wasting too much of your summer worrying about your stupid fantasy team. You set the lineups on Sunday and you pretty much ignore your team for 4-5 days.

Well, the draft ran smoothly. How does everyone feel about their team?
jammertime
03-09-2008, 03:56 PM
I wasn't able to attend the draft. I just checked out my roster and it looks kind of weak.
It looks like I'll be really strong in stolen bases but not really strong in the rest of the categories. I'll need all of my guys to have career years just to keep pace in the HR and RBI categories.
I'll definitely need an upgrade at catcher and closer. My pitchers had a combined 9 saves last year.
ggazoo69
03-09-2008, 04:06 PM
My pitching has some question marks. I'm not sure where Joba Chamberlain will be pitching yet -- if he'll be a starter or reliever. Also, I took Liriano and Pedro. Liriano is returning from Tommy John surgery and Pedro is just plain old. And can Bedard live up to the hype?
I'm pretty weak in the OF, too. But, overall, I like my team. I got Cabrera at 3B and Ichiro (for his steals). I think Tejada can do well in Houston with that short left-field porch.
I'm most disappointed in my Evan Longoria pick. It says "NA" next to his name. ???? I wonder what Tony Parker did to him? I guess I'll be dumping him.
I'm sure Laimbeer's son will be proposing trades with me and the other teams as soon as possible. :)
Darth Tater
03-09-2008, 04:25 PM
I feel pretty good about my picks. I caouldn't believe Chase Utley almost fell to me at tenth. I would have taken him first, lol.
Anyhow, I am pleased with Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Braun as my bang bang #10 &11 picks. Also joining my team from last years squad are Pat Burrell Tim Lincecum, and Yovani Gallardo. Also for brief stints I had Kelly Johnson, Shane Victorino, Carlos Marmol, Kevin Gregg, Zack Greinke, and Justin Upton.
Of course, doing that didn't work out so well with my hockey team this year.
I was careful to get a good catcher and relief pitchers this year, which I didn't have last year. I figured it's much easier to get outfielders off the wire than a quality relief pitcher.
I was so strong up the middle last year, but I couldn't do anything about that this year.
I'm hoping some of my youngsters do well.
Overall, I think I'm fairly solid and will be competitive, but that's impossible to say this early. Usually, about 3 guys that I drafted are still on my team after the first month!! :pound:
Looking at everyones team I didn't see anyone with a bad team, but I really don't know the players that well.

Let me try to clarify the proper way to set your weekly lineups guys. OK, I think the first teams play on Tuesday March 25th. That means your lineups must be set on the previous Sunday. So on Sunday the 23rd or sooner, go to the MONDAY March 24th lineup and set it for the week. Do this on SUNDAY in the MONDAY slot!!!
For the next week, on SUNDAY the 30th or sooner, go to the MONDAY March 31st slot and set for the week, etc...

I think a couple of teams begin Tuesday. Then the rest of the league starts the following Friday or something. But you'll need to set your lineup by this Sunday the 23rd in your Monday the 24th slot. That should set the entire week, but check to make sure. So set it on Sunday in the Monday the 24th slot. I'm pretty sure if you set it in the Sunday slot it won't work...You can set it in the Sunday slot too just to be sure though.

so is everybody ready for some baseball.... as i look out my window watching the snow come down :cold:.
but its suppose to be 50 for opening day... i see two folks havn't done anything with the team since feb, hope there just waiting till the last sec.... non active teams makes for a boring time, (and the reason i havn't tried a league in years save one with rl friends)
good luck to all, unless your playing me then please take it easy on me.

I really think we will be OK in that regard. Last year we had a really good group in the baseball league. Nobody quit, and people made an effort to stay on top of their lineups. :) Well, the commissioner is a concern, but Jammer and I are working on that.:sssh: Oh...and Roscoe's team will suck.Always does. We already know it, but it's not from lack of effort on his part. He just doesn't know what the hell he is doing.:pound::stirthepot:
I looked at my team this morning. I like it. That's usually a bad sign for me...

Don't forget to set your lineups for Monday today.
Even though some guys played last week and the two weeks are combined on Yahoo, you still have the option of making lineup changes for next week. :)

I'm in another non-PF.com fantasy baseball league and just made a trade that I was looking for your thoughts on.
I follow baseball the least out of any of the sports, so I'm wondering what you guys think of the trade (although I guess I should have asked for your input before making the trade, but I just thought of asking now! haha)
I was offered:
Kevin Youkilis
José Valverde
Brad Lidge
For:
David Wright
I have 2 quality 3Bs in Wright and Ryan Braun. I missed the draft so it, so there are some holes on my team that need filling. My SP and RP are weak. I don't even have a closer on my roster.
So I countered with:
Ryan Braun
Jeremie Guthrie (I threw him in to even the trade, since I'd have to drop someone anyway. I picked him up as a free agent a few days ago.)
For:
Brad Penny
Jose Velverde
This deal was accepted by the other manager.
So what do you guys think? Fair trade or did I get shafted? The deal was accepted within about 30 minutes of me proposing it, so I'm a bit worried I got robbed! haha

I'm a huge Ryan Braun fan, Jammer. This guy has it all and if he stays injury free he's going to be incredible. He was in the minors much of last year and still posted incredible numbers.
There are very few players I would trade him for. You got good players in return, but personally I wouldn't have done it. You know your team's needs though, so don't stress it.

If you look at last year's rankings:
Penny 101st in MLB
Valverde 75th
versus
Braun 18th
Guthrie 181st
Guthrie is a throw-away, so you basically traded a fantasy stud in Braun for two solid guys in Penny and Valverde. Nobody knows how things will turn out at this point, but you may regret this one if Braun stays healthy. I'm always confused when trying to figure in the Canadian exchange rate anyways...

My thinking was that I already had David Wright at 3B and my SP and RP was REALLY weak, so I was trading from a position of strength to fill some positions of weakness.
I think that Braun is the best of the 3 players as far as stats go, but I already have a big stat guy at 3B in Wright.

I definitely didn't think that I won the trade, but I felt as though it was one that I needed to make to improve my pitching. I got a top tier starter and a top tier closer in return for my 2nd best 3B.

This morning my team was tied 5-5. I've got to be very happy if I can just keep it close. So many injuries. My stud catcher and second baseman got hurt opening day and haven't returned. My stud reliever went on the DL. Ryan Braun playing through an injury. My best pitcher bothered by something (although he pitched well in a 1-0 loss). Not a good opening week and it's frustrating that I need to leave those guys in my starting lineup since it's a weekly setting. That's life. If I can escape this week at 5-5 or near that I'll consider myself "lucky"...

Arrrrghhhhh.
I can't freakin believe this. Now on top of everything else, yesterday I lost my second best reliever and my 2nd base guy (who has been red hot) to injury. The pitcher at least will end up on the DL.
So I was honestly thinking this morning that about the only guy who hasn't been hurt was my first rounder J. Rollins. So of course he was just pulled from the game today after he came up lame running the bases.
I think two of my outfielders haven't been hurt this year and a couple of pitchers. I'm not even sure I'll be able to field a full team next week.:yellowprison::yellowprison::yellowprison::ye llowprison::yellowprison:
I mean, my team was deep, but I'm literally losing guys daily. I've lost track but I think I've had about ten guys go down since opening day. Just plain weird.
I can't replace them either because most are going down on Monday or Tuesday. I had Berkman go down on Thursday last week and he didn't return so i pulled him this week. Guess what? He came back Monday even though he was doubtful and hit a homer.
Very strange.

Fantasy baseball sure is fun. It's my favorite.
Injuries. Just lost a great pitcher for the year (Gallardo). I think I got a good replacement, but ouch.
My #1 pick (Rollins) has been out for weeks. My hottest hitter (batting .500) is dealing with his 2nd injury this year and has only played ten days. Somehow, I'm standing toe to toe with the big boys so far, but I don't know how much longer my luck will hold out.
I wish I hadn't had the last (tenth) pick. My favorite player, Chase Utley, dropped all the way to 9th and then the computer picked him for Wart. :mmph:

:mmph:
The guy is an absolute monster this year.
Wow, I read your first sentence I thought to myself "Holy crap, Darth is actually posting a message in the fantasy baseball thread that doesn't involve him crying about injuries."
Then I kept reading....
I had Gallardo in another league that I'm in (and never cried about losing him by the way). :stirthepot:

Yea, if you were lucky (or some people say corrupt) like me, you could have drafted #1 and had ARod on your team sitting on the Disabled List.
I told you NOT to draft a damned Yankee. But did you listen?
I've just got wounded guys. You on the other hand have wounded jerks!! :pound:

Wow, Tates, you're like the Little Engine That Could. Except, in this case, you're the Little Fantasy Baseball Player That Could.
Here's my image of Tates as a fantasy participant: Tates has a room in his house devoted to elaborate charts and forecasts of all players in each sport. He has employed a part-time assistant (unpaid intern from Boise State University) to keep these things organized from midnight to 7 a.m. (while Tates sleeps). The assistant wakes Tates up as soon as Yahoo! has posted the new results, whatever time that is. Coffee and donuts are provided for each morning's "standings unveiling." Tates sometimes keeps a digital audio recorder with him during the unveiling to record his thoughts. He listens to them later. Tates also keeps a notebook by the bed in case he thinks of a different lineup configuration during the middle of the night or a possible trade scenario. Which reminds me, Tates has never asked for any of my players in a trade.
My point is this, fellas, Tates is back in first! We need to step up our games! :pound:

Anyone need an outfielder? I've got 6 pretty good ones. I need a 2B or a SS. Make me an offer.

I'm really not into fantasy sports, other than the fact I hope the Lions win the Super Bowl someday, but I saw this article that I thought a few of you who enjoy fanstasy baseball might find interesting. Here is a portion of what it said.
"A fantasy sports league is facing a very real lawsuit from Major League Baseball, and the U.S. Supreme Court is deciding right now whether it wants to play ball.
At issue is a big case roiling the sports world: Can MLB and its players charge fantasy leagues for the right to use their names and statistics?"

Interesting stuff. I'm sure Darth Tater's heart skipped a beat when he read that.
P.S. Loved the Lions comment! :pound:

LOL walrus breath. Good to see you finally came out of hibernation. I've been forced to mess with Roscoe the last couple of days.
If I'm not mistaken, this battle (or similar ones) have been going on in the courts for several years. Cyber law is like the new frontier. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.
I doubt it affects the individual leagues. I think it only affects Yahoo & those guys, but they could pass the costs on.

It's nonsense. MLB should be ashamed of itself.
The internet is a free and open market. There is nothing to stop someone from starting black market leagues with the real names and stats.
If MLB had any class (or business sense), they would partner with Yahoo, rather than alienate Fantasy Baseball fans.

You are talking about the same people that turned a blind eye to steroid use for years and now want to do a witch hunt...

OK, this place needs to liven up...now that the Pistons are officially dead.
So, I'm playing Hoof Hearted this week. Dating back to last year, he always brings his best against me. I'm starting to take it personally. No matter how good my team is...the green guy gives me trouble and has beat me in close matches two of three times. Three of four if things keep up like they are this week.
So wtf..is Hoof hearted anyhow? Half hearted? Does he like horses? I don't get it.
What's in a name?
Ok, I can deal with Jammer's name. Jammers Jays. He likes them (can't imagine why) and has some on his team...so the name makes sense.
Laims Lethal Lineup. Again, his lineup ain't so lethal, but the use of alliteration works for me.
Sandwich Microwaves. Gimme a break. For 8 years and 45 teams this guy uses the same name. What does ORIGINALITY mean to you?
Bezeach:The guy changes name as often as he talks trash. Lame!
Roundabouts:Not too bad. From the song by "Yes"? If not...what?
Holliday Inn Express:Well, it's better than Baseballers & footballers...but I guess his Dad could only come up with one clever name per season.
Legat:HUH??????? Lucy...you have splainin' to do...
Tigers PFP:Is that like Mayberry RFD? What the heck does PFP stand for. "Pistons Forum Pansies"?
Phillies Phever:Best name of the bunch. Funny...best team too! :p_welldone:
OMG. Look at my lineup guys. This is the first time the entire season (including draft day) that I have NOBODY on the DL. You are all in trouble now. :djparty: Gotta go. They want my ring size.:winner_first_h4h:

my wife is from scotland... tons of roundabouts there.... thats about it.... lol
if i could just get lucky a few weeks i could be in the thick of things.... i have lost two weeks where the scores were like 9-1 and if you look at the stats i was within 3-4 in each set.... maybe i'll start to string some good weeks together now... fingers crossed

When I was on the DetNews, I was the microwave, and my location was Ol' Sandwich, or Sandwich town, an old part of Windsor, where I grew up.
Hence, my team are the microwaves (an army of Vinnie Johnson clones) from the town of Old Sandwich.
Geez. Learn to google already!
They want my ring size.:winner_first_h4h:

Darth, several years ago, I was watching a horse race of funniest sport videos or whatever. In the race the name of the horse that was in it was hoof hearted. Well hoof hearted was kiind of towards the back but as the race was coming down to the final stretch. The announcer was going nuts saying hoof hearted every few seconds cause hoof hearted was making a huge comeback. Anyways if you say hoof hearted about five times in a row, it sounds like you are saying "who farted'. Well when the announcer said it about 5 times in a row really fast, he realized whoever named the horse kind of pulled one over on him, cause he immediately bust out in laughter right in the middle of calling his horse race. In the video, it actually sounded like the announcer kept yelling who farted. Thus it made it into one of the funniest sports videos. I told that story on a thread in here a few years ago about funny sport names or whatever, and one of the guys (ggazoo?) I think went with it.
