View Full Version : TIGERS 08 SEASON THREAD

I will start by saying I am an Inge fan. Does anyone else think that he could have gotten to that slow roller between third and short in the eighth inning that scored the tying run? Seemed like it would have been a routine play for him.
I try not to do it but I find myself watching the games and seeing plays that Inge could have made at third if he were there.
Inge is sort of like the Delfino of the Tigers. He's a great defender. His offense is potent, but inconsistent. His versitility allows him to play multiple positions.
As far as the win being "great" or not... they were jumping around the field like they just won the World Series, so I think it was an emotional win at least. Call it a confidence builder since they were able to come back in the 9th against a very good team.

We were Polanco away from season being over. That was a terrible win. You cant lose TWO 4-run leads and be a playoff team. The Central dv is there for the taking but we have to be 10 games over .500 by Allstar break.
All egos aside, here's our best lineup:
CF- GRANDY
2B- POLANCO
1B- CABRERA
RF- ORDONEZ
DH- GUILLEN
LF- THAMES
SS- RENTERIA
C- PUDGE
3B- INGE
and if JL dont get that, he needs to go. Shef needs to be treated like the 40 yr old that he is.

I would like to try this order for 10 games. Let's see if we can jump start the bats and tighten the defense. These are our best players though. We are not a running team so if Polanco can get on base we may be able to take advantage of Grandersons power early.

It's the pitching.
You always come on and say this after they score 5 or more runs. What was the excuse last week when starting pitching is keeping teams to four runs and we score 1?
How many runs are the pitchers allowed to give up?
TaShawn
05-08-2008, 03:35 PM
We have the 2nd highest ERA in baseball.
We've allowed 194 runs and the only team worse is Texas, with 195.
Our division leading Twins have allowed 138 runs.
So, we've given up 41% more runs than they have.
Atlanta has only given up 120 runs, so we've given up 62% more than them.
If the pitching doesn't drastically change, we are destined to lose in the playoffs even if we somehow out-hit eveyone in our division. We would be like the Phoenix Suns.

Justin V is not competitive and for sure not dominant.
Couple that with Rogers weak shoulder and we are .530 at best.

Verlander is 1-6 with a 6.43 ERA. He's supposed to be our ace. Looks like he's having his sophomore slump a year too late.
This team has alread trotted 17 pitchers out there this season and it's only about a month and a half into the season.

I'll continue to follow the team, of course, as most of us will, but at some point you have to wonder when they're gonna turn it on. The season is nearly 25 percent over. Lucky for them, the Central looks like a free-for-all.

I'm just sort of commenting on the progression in general:
We can't pitch (me)---see ya next year (TFD)---maybe Barry Bonds is the answer (Mik)---you don't know the rules idiot (Mik)---I'm cancelling my subscription (Gaz)---etc.

I love your optimism, BL. I wish I could share it. Two runs scored in 18 innings against KC in the past two games. I have a tough time getting excited about that. I've never seen a team underperform so badly. Again, however, maybe we expected too much and failed to realize the pitching wasn't so good.

OK, but overall the pitching has been pretty miserable -- the starting pitching in particular. Team ERA is the worst in the bigs and their WHIP is close to the bottom. Oakland, a team with half the payroll of Detroit's, has the best ERA. But maybe it's coming around.

The teams slugging percentage with runners in scoring position is near the bottom of the league also. It is not all pitching.
When we get the pitching the bats are silent; when we get the hitting the pitchers are gas station attendants. We need to figure a way to get the two on the same page.
Maybe Leyland needs to turn his batting order upside down. Lead off with the number 9 hitter and let Granderson bat last?

Well, I see our Tigers found yet another way to lose last night. Here are some moves I'd like to see made:
1. Release Sheffield.
2. DH Guillen and don't let him play the field anymore.
3. Re-insert Inge at 3B; keep Cabrera at 1B. As much as I hate Inge's bat, he is part of the heart and soul of the 2006 team and the team misses that leadership on the field. Our defense is pretty poor to boot.
4. Play Santiago at 2B and SS at least three games a week total and lead him off. Give both Renteria and Polanco some time off to ponder their .260-.270 BAs.
5. Move Granderson down in the lineup. Grandy is awful right now, and he is doing nothing to begin rallies.
6. Release Miner and move Galarraga to the 'pen. Galarraga can be the long-inning relief guy. It looks like this team will need it.
7. Get Joyce some more at-bats just to see if he can stick.
8. Trade Thames before the deadline for some minor-league pitching. We don't need anymore right-handed hitters and he should have a shot to go somewhere he can play more than once every two weeks.
9. Fire the hitting coach. The pitching is a huge problem but that was expected. The hitting, however, was expected to make up somewhat for the poor pitching, and it hasn't. Not saying firing the hitting coach will help but something must be tried.

What a joke that 7th was. They let a pop-up fall.
At least Bondo pitched well and didn't get the loss.
Watching the Tigers lose all the time makes me appreciate the Pistons even more. Making the ECF 6 seasons in a row (4 teams left) is like making the baseball playoffs 6 seasons straight. Tigers have the talent to do it, It's just not happening.

This is the main problem with this team. The hitters are pressing and the pitching is trying to throw shutouts to compensate. It is putting too much pressure on them so they are walking batters and and putting themselves in "high-pressure" situations and failing. They are a staff that "should" be pitching to contact but can't afford to with this offense.

First, let me say that Diamondback park is one beyoootiful setting. We sat above the 3rd base line and thechairs were comfy and majestic. The food was soso but I enjoyed my two hotdogs, fries and 2 beers. The popup dropped by Guillen and Renteria looked like a play out of Parenthood. We pitched well enough to win but ...o well.
Second, I had a great time also at saturdays game. We were 20 rows up behind first base. Great seats. Joyce had a cool home run. There were about 25 Tiger Fans with us and we OWNED the stadium. We booed everytime someone in a Dback jersey stood up. It was funny. Todd Jones gave us gas again, but after we won, it seemed better than a Stanley Cup.

Tiger lose in the bottom of the ninth 1-0 as Bobby Seay walks in the winning run on four straight pitches with the bases loaded. I guess he was on Michigan time and was tired and just wanted to get back to the hotel:)
The Tiger were shut out for the 8th time which leagues the majors..
You all recall Jair Jurrgens the guy the Tigers traded to the Braves for Rinteria.
He has had 10 starts with a record on 5-2 and an ERA of 2.64. That my friends would make him the Tiger ace if he was still here. I say that as I saw Rinteria come up twice today with runners on base and he could not knock them in. he is however 3rd on the Tiger list in RBI with 24
What? no one corrected me?? It was the bottom of the 12 inning not the ninth as the Tiger pitchers with the Gambler leading the way went 11 and a 3rd innings without giving up a run....
But alas the team that scored 54 runs in 4 games last week could not get not a single 1 in twelve innings last night after their playoff brothers (Wings and Pistons )had prevailed earlier across the country in Motown.

Ok well tonight it was the bottom of the ninth and they lost again by one run.
That's two consecutive wasted pitching performances by Rodgers and Bonderman as the Tigers bats took the nigh off and the relievers walked batters who eventually scored on push other runners across the plate. the bad then about tonight is that Bondy had only thrown 83 pitches and JL yanked him...what's a pitcher got to do around the Tiger clubhouse to get a chance at a complete game victory? many certain tiger victories were blown last year due to the Leyland hook...give us break and let the guys pitch if the still got something left in the tank.

Jim Leyland has some uncomfy news about Carlos Guillen
Yes, like me, the Detroit Tigers' current third baseman would prefer that Jim Leyland be the person to let the world in on the little secret that he's battling hemorrhoids.
"He can hardly move — he's got hemorrhoids so bad. He's been playing with hemorrhoids that probably need to be lanced. He probably shouldn't have been out there (third base on Monday) ... he could hardly walk."
Yikes ... and here we thought that playing for the Tigers was embarrassing enough.

The Tigers were 2 outs from a pitcher getting a complete game in a Tiger uniform and it would have been the first since Verlanders no hitter last June.. But Gallarraga gives up a two run dinger in the bottom of the ninth and of course JL pulls him to bring in Todd J to retire the last 2 batters.
At least one Detroit team won away on the road last night.

Inge made two plays at third base the other day that Guillen doesn't make. He is solid down there and needs to be there every day (except when Pudge needs a break).
I am hoping that the pitching has turned the corner and the bats heat up with the weather.

Guess which team has the longest winning streak in the major league?
TIGERS!!!
We've given up 2 runs in the last 3 games. 1 by Verlander. 1 by Rogers. And tonight 7 scoreless for our ace, Gallaraga.
We are only 2.5 games out of 2nd in our division. The Sox are catchable. We just need this pitching to keep it up.

No worries, Thee. Nothing wrong with going out on a limb once a while. That's what fans do.
This team does not have the starting pitching to contend deep into the playoffs. There will have to be some activity at the trade deadline. Imagine running Nate Robertson out there in a crucial ALCS or ALDS game? I know he's been pitching better lately, but he's not the guy I want in the clutch. Galaragga is really key, I think. If the guy can continue to pitch this way, he's my No. 3 and Nate is No. 4 and whoever (Bonine) is No. 5.
Look out for Cleveland. They'll have a better second half.
There are too many good teams in the American league that should wake up. Tigers will need to play .700 ball the 2nd half to make the playoffs.

It's just this mentality of giving up on "your team" that bugs me. You see it in chat all of the time. The Pistons go down by 10 points in the first half and everyone says "game over". The Tigers get off to a slow start and the "season is over".
If people are going to give up on their teams and make these hasty claims, they should get called out when the team turns it around.

If they can keep up at least a .700 clip the thru the end of July they could over take the Sox and the redhot Twins...The only issue right now is that they still have to overcome at least 6-7 teams ahead of them just to secure a wildcard spot.

Dre, I think .700 is possible and would love it. But .600 from here out would get the job done. Sox just got sweep. They don't scare me. Twinks do though. We might need to take the division.
9 out of 14 american league teams are over .500 ball. Our goal should be to win the division. There are just too many variables and too many hot teams outside the division to worry about the wild card. I have a feeling that the wild card will finish better than us no matter how well we do. (.600 ball rest of the way gives us 88 wins - sounds about right)

Agree that the division should be the goal here. We are only 5 back and we have made up about six games in the last two weeks so plenty of time to make a move. Just have to hope that winning momentum is in place and they don't stumble into a slump, regress and lose all that the have gained in June.

Pujols iz out, so the series is there for the taking. Rockies are another beatable opponent. Lets hope Tigs can go 5-1 on this homestand before heading to Minneapolis. After that it is Tigers' another favorite opponent - Seattle. So, potentially we can be looking at 9-3 stretch.

Sounds like his career is probably over. Too bad...I thought he did a great job backing Pudge.
DETROIT -- Tigers catcher Vance Wilson, 35, has experienced another setback in his efforts to recover from a right elbow injury.
The Tigers said Wilson underwent yet another surgery on the elbow Tuesday at Detroit Medical Center because of a tearing of the previously grafted ulnar collateral ligament.
Team officials called Tuesday's surgery a "right elbow reconstruction revision." Tigers' Wilson suffers another setback with more surgery (http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080625/SPORTS0104/806250451/1361)

Well, Tigers finally cash in in the 9th inning and win this game. They had 19 hits, but only managed 8 runs because of double-plays, strikeouts, etc. Pitching was shaky, except for the last couple of guys. Zoom needs to get his control in order. Hey, what's happened to Thames? What did he get ejected for?
It was a 3-2 count and he took a curve ball that was clearly outside. He started moving toward first and the ump called him out. He instantly got up in his grill and basically forced the ump to eject him. The whole sequence took about 1.5 seconds.
The ball wasn't that close. Way outside.

outside yes.... but to close to take and start for first base without it being called... even the announcers said it was borderline.
Probably didn't help his case by throwing the bat and heading to first without the call being made, umps hate being "shown up" and he was in the umps face so fast it was the easy call. Can't argue balls and strikes no matter what. The announcers mentioned something about him being frustrated over something that happened in the previous half inning that i missed.
Arguing balls and strikes is the one area where managers and players need to restrain themselves. The umps will call you out every time if you show them up.

MLB needs to think really hard about installing some technology to call balls and strikes. The umps sometimes play too much of a factor.
TaShawn
06-26-2008, 12:38 PM
I personally disagree with the commonly held philosophy that the umps should add their own "flavor" to the game.
It would be like a tennis line judge adding his flavor. It's either in or it's out.
In baseball, it's either a strike or it's not. It is so easy to define and would be fairly easy to implement an electronic strike zone, that I can't believe it's not happening.
They already have the technology to trace the ball's trajectory and can show you where it is at any point in time. The left to right part of the strike zone is the easy part to define, because it is the same with each hitter. The low to high part of the zone would be a little more complicated, but still very do-able. Each player would be fitted when they join the MLB and their strike zone would be entered into the system. So, when Marcus Thames steps up to the plate, the computer would know that his strike zone extends from 18" off the ground to 40". There would be a virtual box floating above the plate and the pitcher would either throw the ball through those coordinates or he would miss.
You'd still have the homeplate ump to make the call and he would wear an ear piece that would signal when the pitch hits the strike zone. To a fan, there would be no difference. To a pitchers, batters, and managers, they would all realize that arguing is futile.
It's the one part of the game that is slightly riggable and it could be eliminated tomorrow. What a pure sport it would be (except for the steroid thing...).

I would add that they shouldn't wait that long with an instant replay. It would be lots quicker than having umps huddle for a decision on fair/foul, etc. or having manager come out and argue. If someone is sitting upstairs, ala NHL, the decision would take seconds to make.

That was an awesome game last night. What a jam we got out of in the 12th(?). Bases loaded and 0 outs!
That was one of the longest games I've ever sat through.

This is what many expected from this team - strong hitting with weak bullpen.

After winning that game, Tigers lose the next one. I thought this would've been something that they could lean on, but Verlander struggled and offense didn't do much at all. Now that so-called "big win" doesn't mean jack.

Tigers' call for more arms unanswered | Tigers.com: News (http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080731&content_id=3231726&vkey=news_det&fext=.jsp&c_id=det)
Kyle Farnsworth will join the Tigers on Friday at Tampa Bay. No other relievers will be coming with him.
Though team president/general manager Dave Dombrowski said he had "some discussions" with other clubs Thursday, none resulted in a deal ahead of the 4 p.m. ET nonwaiver trade deadline. He doesn't expect those talks to continue into August, leaving Wednesday's swap of Ivan Rodriguez for Farnsworth as likely Detroit's lone move of the trading season barring any new discussions.
Though the search for bullpen help continued into Thursday, the asking prices remained high -- too high for a club that no longer boasts the depth in the farm system to give up many prospects. With demand around the league for help in the bullpen, that's what it was going to take.

Pudge struck out in his first at bat as a Yankee.

I have to admit, it's weird to see him wearing the NY uniform.

Willis inconsistent in loss to Sarasota | Tigers.com: News (http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080801&content_id=3234737&vkey=news_det&fext=.jsp&c_id=det&partnerId=rss_det)
Dontrelle Willis took another step in the right direction Thursday night, though he remains off the Detroit Tigers' radar for now.
Willis allowed a run on five hits over five-plus innings for the Class A Advanced Lakeland Flying Tigers as they suffered a 1-0 loss to the Sarasota Reds at Ed Smith Stadium.
The former All-Star struck out three and walked three in the longest of his four outings for Lakeland. The left-hander faced 21 batters, inducing nine groundouts and three fly balls. Detroit sent Willis (0-1) to Lakeland in June to straighten out his control problems. Though he pitched well enough to win Thursday, he again struggled to throw strikes at times.

Tigers get a good start by Galarraga, then blow it late. And they get swept by the Rays. Leyland said there might be changes coming...

This loss was Leyland's. Seay was pitching great and got pulled for no reason...then Rodney blew the game as he's been prone to do lately. Stupid loss to go back under.500

I guess we expected more than this team is capable of. They are a .500 team and their bullpen stinks even with Farnsworth in there. They need to cut a couple of people lose, bring up a couple of youngsters and go after some pitching in the offseason.
Looks like Jurrjens trade took Tigers out of playoff contention. If he's in there, likely there're 5-6 more wins on the table.
Of course, you don't know this until you make that trade. Galarraga kind of made up for that, but still...

What kind of changes is he talking about? What is left to do? How did Sheffield and Thames do last night? Do we have pitching prospects to bring up? Not sure what changes he is thinking of?

Well, for one, get rid of Rodney.
I was at Yankee Stadium yesterday (for the first time) and saw Pudge play well for New York. I looked up at the out-of-town scoreboard and saw that the Tigers were up 4-1 and turned to my buddy and said, "The Tigers will find a way to lose this game, you watch."

For what? A round of peanuts for the dugout? What are you going to get for him?

Release his sorry behind! He isn't worth the roster spot they spend on him. I've read this a few times regarding him and I agree whole-heartedly, what good is 95 mph if you can't get it over the plate. HE"S our closer!!?!??!??!! See you in 09!
