View Full Version : 2008 Red Wings Playoffs

Red Wings will be playing Nashville Predators in the first round of the 2008 NHL playoffs. This seems to be like the better choice, at least due to travel and inexperienced goaltending that Nashville has. Wings are limping into the playoffs with many injuries:
- Tomas Kopecky is gone, won't be back for 4-6 months with torn MCL
- Kirk Maltby is likely to miss a week due to hamstring and won't be ready for the beginning of the playoffs
- Tomas Holmstrom is just coming back from groin injury and won't be 100% during the playoffs
- Kris Draper is day-to-day with groin injury
- Brad Stuart is out with a broken finger and may be ready for the 1st game
- Dan Cleary missed 22 games and lost 15 lbs so it may take a while before he comes back into the top shape
This should be a tight low-scoring series and Wings should be able to come up on top barring any significant injuries.

Encouraging sign has been that all those grand rapids guys have played fairly well, at leas not been dissapointing for me(Erikson, hartigan, etc). Biggest blow of course is, that "king of interference" is not up to date yet, but franzen has been hugely big surprize at homer's place.
This series shouldn't last more than 5 games. Ok, six.

All Wings got are the youngsters coming up from GR and this new kid Abdelkader (spelling?) that they just signed from U of M. He had a pretty good game first time out while playing for free (under NHL rules an amateur can play one game for a team without a contract).

It wasn't full intensity hockey but red wing controlled the whole thing and won 3-1. Preds had 3 or so good chances: they cycled around dom's net but as long they were't able to send puck in front of net, their effort was pretty much wasted.
rafalski had some giveaways but D was good. Most shots by preds were covered or blocked.

It never looked like the game was in doubt. I have to admit, I had some recollections of the Wings games where they struggled to score and ended up losing on some fluky goal, but this team is different. Babcock has prepared this team to win 1-0 and 2-1 games, which they showed today. Way to go.

The refs has lost this game for a bit. They should've been a bit stricter with the whistles on all the activities once the play has been stopped. Some of the calls actually really made me wonder - that goal that they disallowed for Nashville, then penalty on Hasek. They also allow Tootoo too much free physical play after the whistle.
mikhail1973
04-12-2008, 05:04 PM
Both teams get breaks on the offensive end, but the Wings are still leading by 1 after the 2nd period - 3-2. Refs need to stop all the Nashville's extra curricular activities after the whistle. They are allowing them to take runs at the Wings players once the play has been blown dead and to take shots at the Wings players after the whistle.

With one period you can't get it done. With two good and one bad periud it is possible. But preds had only one good period. Call it stamina or endurance, but as game progressed red wings got better and better. 4-2 is fair trade.

They didn't really give up Forsberg, he retired. But they did trade away lots of their better players because of the uncertainty with the ownership. And I have to say, they did make the first two games competitive. My worry now is that they don't injure Wings players taking unnecessary runs when they are behind and are losing the series.

This team feels different then the last few years... Maybe its our coach learning how to coach in the big time.. (there is a ton more pressure here then he had in his other cup run).
But yesterday when the hockey gods kicked that puck to the front of the net for the freebie and then the quick turnover and bad goal... you could just feel the here we go again... But we called the timeout, settled down got the goal to go back up and were steady from then on.
I think that time out could go along ways to a serious cup challenge. After this game i don't have that feeling I've had for years waiting on the other shoe to drop and for us to just fall apart.

They can't beat us physically, Wings had already proven that by taking out Calgary and big tough San Jose last year. There's McCarty, Franzen, Kronwall, Drake, there are tough physical guys on this team who can win the battles. Wings will be alright in that department.

Not sure about when to call a time out in hockey, but after that emotional goal that allows the preds to tie it, wouldn't it make since for Babcock to call a time out and get your troups and goalie together and regroup for those final four minutes .....instead letting it get away 9 seconds later!!:hanged2:

problem is there is no coach who can see damn future. Bab' was confident that his players were confident, but seems that he was wrong. Red wings tried to play a "safe game": keep lead, trap neutral zone but ( instead of their usual puck übercontrolling) it didnt work. No tragic, didn't expect to win all games but lose with final minutes going is disheartening.

Timeouts are rarely used except in the very end game. Babcock followed the same strategy 98 out of 100 coaches would do in a similar circumstance.
This series is too close for comfort. The Wings needed to win this one, and put the series on ice, so they could rest. I don't like giving this one up so weakly to a Nashville team that is tough at home.
That mistake by Stuart had me furious. I think he knew as soon as the puck hit the back of the net he screwed up. What a silly, stupid play to make.

Reminds me of a couple of those early losses to the Ducks last year that they never recovered from. Three one goal losses to the Ducks last year and 2 in OT
Too close for comfort was right. I switched channels at the end of the first period with the wings up 1-0;, to the Raptors/heat game and then to the Cavs/Sixers game and actually for got about the wings game. I turned back to the game hoping it was over and lord and behold we were up 3-2 with only 4 minutes left. 20 seconds later it was tied and 29 seconds after I tune it on we were behind and I had no faith they would tie let alone win it........Have to hope that the perceived Predator momentum is squashed on Wednesday.

I watched the latter part of the 3rd period and even though Wings were leading, it looked like it was just a matter of time before Nashville ties the score. The Wings barely spent any time in the offensive end, and they had problem clearing the puck out of their own zone. Wings were just running around chasing Nashville players. Well the in studio commentators said it best in between the second and third periods. The wings don't react to goals whether they score them or when the opposition does. Monday night they allow the predators to score two goals within 9 seconds with the latter being the winning goal and tonight after scoring a goal themselves to put them back in the game, they give up another quick one in 11 or so seconds and that turned out to be the winning goal.
The dominator was yanked quickly and I would have done the same thing...although you can't blame the whole thing on him....

I watched most of the 3rd period and Wings looked out of sorts. There was no offensive pressure and way too many turnovers in their own end to let Nashville have great scoring chances. I wonder if the move to Ozzy is permanent. But the team just didn't look good. They need to pick things up if they are to win the series. Wouldn't really want to see it going to game 7.

I have to admit, but this resembles the Wings of old. Too many shots and not many quality scoring chances. Yeah, they dominated the game, but you have to be able to score more than once on 53 shots. You are not going to get many shutouts, so you've gotta figure that one goal is not going to be enough on most nights to win the game.

I honourably disagree with you. Quality chance does't mean always missed empty net. Just shots werent "perfect". And they didnt try to hang on one goal.
But, yeah, around the net they should be better. Trotz himself admitted that they didnt deserve OT.

Yin and yang..Abbott and Costello…hot chocolate and those tiny marshmallows…Dick Cheney and the dark side of The Force…Red Wings hockey and octopus twirling – some things just belong together.
But NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman in his endless quest to suck every ounce of fun out of hockey has decreed to the Red Wings that their Zamboni driving guy, Al Sobotka, may no longer twirl over his head the octopi that fans toss onto the ice. From now on when fans chuck internal skeleton-free critters onto the rink, Sobotka will have to remove them sans the twirling or face a $10,000 fine.

Interesting game winning goal from the center-ice. Crazy bounce, I wouldn't fault the goaltender. But Nashville is simply not good enough. Although, I have to be honest, a few breaks going their way and Detroit is coming back for the game 7. With this win Wings can breathe easier and just sit and wait for their second round opponent. It will be decided in the 7th game of the Sharks-Flames series. Should Sharks win, Wings will host Avs. Nothing like Wings-Avs series to get interest up. Should Flames win, they'll be coming to Detroit for the second round series. I'm pulling for Sharks.

In the playoffs every little bit helps. Wings should be rested and a bit healed from these few days off. However, series doesn't start until Thursday, at least according to this (http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app?service=page&page=SubseasonSchedule). So Dallas will get 3 days off to rest and prepare. I had the same thought. Scheduling the first game between the Wings and the Stars for Thursday would have made more sense if a seventh game between the Stars and Sharks had taken place on Tuesday. Maybe I am confusing basketball and hockey, but it seems that usually the team that takes longer to conclude the preceding series (here, Dallas) is forced to start the next series in 2 days, or 3 at most. The Thursday start for the Wings and the Stars series seems to reward the team that took longer to finish its series (Dallas), by giving that team a lot of rest, while possibly hurting the team that finished its series more quickly (Detroit), insofar as too much time off can create a bit of rust.

Anaheim clearly wasn't what he used to be. This series may be decided by one lucky goal in 7th game OT. I still hope that wings in 6.
Dallas was a 5th seed in the west and finished the season on a weak note. Their goaltending has stepped it up a notch in the playoffs and wants to shake off the label of playoff chokers. They had no press in the first two rounds and surprised the Ducks in the last round. With goaltending and a strong first unit along with veteran leadership (Modano), they could be a formidable opponent. If they have an answer for Franzen (only 1 or less goals this series) then we be in trouble. If he takes off (3 or more goals) against the Stars, then look for a quick ending. I'm STILL predicting a 20 goal playoffs for Franzen.... Wings in 5

Even Dallas coach Dave Tippett couldn't understand what his star forward was doing. Just after time expired in the Stars' 2-1 loss to the Wings in Game 2 of the Western Conference finals, forward Mike Ribeiro stood behind the Detroit net and took a two-handed swing with his stick at goalie Chris Osgood, hitting him in the chest.
"I looked at it and said, 'What's he doing?' until I went in and looked at the tape," Tippett said of Ribeiro.
Indeed, replays showed Osgood clipped Ribeiro up high with the butt-end of his goalie stick as Ribeiro skated by the net chasing after the puck in the waning seconds.
"If that's the case, a butt-end to somebody's face at any time is pretty gutless," Dallas goalie Marty Turco said. "Just sticking your knob out there is a dangerous play."
Added Tippett: "Ribeiro is not going to turn around and chop the goalie like that without having something happening."
Maybe not, but Ribeiro, the Stars' first-line center, did receive a match penalty for his actions, triggering an automatic review of the incident by the league. Colin Campbell, the NHL's vice president of hockey operations, was in attendance for Saturday's game at Joe Louis Arena.
Ribeiro, who assisted on the Stars' goal, declined comment after the game through a team spokesman.
"That's just crossing the line," Kris Draper said. "He swung from behind the net -- a two-hander right at Ozzie. You kind of shake your head and wonder what he was thinking.
"Something like that -- that's right out of 'Slap Shot.' It's literally intent to injure on our best player. I couldn't believe it when he did it."
Osgood, for his part, said any contact he made with his stick was unintentional.
"I was just trying to stand out there to make sure Nick (Lidstrom) didn't get run, because I could see two guys coming," Osgood said. "Just standing my ground with it. Whether I hit him or not, it was an accident."
Lidstrom called for a suspension after the game, and the Wings were quick to note the five-game suspension Calgary goalie Jamie McLennan drew for slashing Johan Franzen in last year's playoffs.
"We'll have to wait and see," Draper said. "You don't want to start saying stuff right now. This is something that's going to be reviewed right away. The linesmen said they saw it, the refs said they saw it. So now the league's going to take a close look at it. Here you are in the Western Conference finals -- all eyes were on it. We'll see what happens."

Then there’s the matter of keeping composure. Mike Ribeiro (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/players/1933/;_ylt=AoJin9uf65WznHyBFW9Mln9m7Yx4) figures to have a great view of Game 3 thanks to his actions after the whistle in the dying seconds of Saturday’s game when he snapped. His two-handed stick swing from behind the goal caught his intended target Chris Osgood (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/players/724/;_ylt=AiYCKmi4rEf.FW5Un_WEAINm7Yx4) right in the chest. And even if Osgood embellished the action a bit, there’s no denying intent and the possible result of injury with Ribeiro’s actions.

Head to head, I'd have to go with the "when they won the cup" team. That was pre-salary cap and that team was STACKED! Although, I think Ozzie is playing better today!

Great point..... you can't really compare this team to the teams pre salary cap... to be more fair... you need to compare how good the wings of those cup wins were compared to the league then, and how good we are now compared to the league now...
In theory this team should have a much smaller margin of error as the teams should be closer in talent.... This team is on a 9 game win streak, team record.
This team is playing as great as any wing team in that teams era.... if that makes sence.
Also, I have much more confidence in ozzie now to make the clutch save then I did 10 years ago.

It is an interesting dilemma, for sure. I would say that the older team had more talent, when you're talking about Larionov and Robitaille on the 3rd line, you're talking about some talent. At the same time Avs had Sacic, Forsberg, Foote, at or near their peaks. There was a handful of good teams including Wings at this time, so I agree that to compare you'd have to look at Wings vs. the league, and it is a mighty difficult task with all the parity cause by salary cap.

Ozzy himself confessed that in order to survive in this league he had a couple of years ago to learn "butterfly style" and luckily for him he had greatest teacher who you can ask - Hasek. Ozzy claimed that butterfly greatly helped to restored his career.
For those who do not know: "butterfly" for goalie is method how to protect your territory even if you are already down.

I think you're right Round. But you don't hear anyone saying hot goalie. And those 1999-2003 teams got their butts kicked by those Avs.
We know Ozzie is bad...
But the media is like, who has a chance to stop this juggernaut !!!
Let's see if Crosby can save the world.
mikhail1973
05-14-2008, 08:16 PM
Ozzie has actually been better this season than he was during the year when Wings won the cup with him in the net. He's not going to stop everything, but he'll make the timely save. And at this stage it is all that is requested from a goalie. That's why all the media is on Turco's behind - he hasn't played bad by any means, no soft goals. But he hasn't made the save when it counted and it contributed to Dallas being on the brink of elimination.

I didn't see any of what you are talking about. Hockey is a funny game. Sometimes the puck bounces off a skate and into the net. Sometimes you face a hot goaltender. Sometimes you get a goal disallowed because a guy gets called for butt interference. I haven't seen the Red Wings let up over the last two losses.

Seems like both of the Stars goals came when the Wings were caught short handed on shift changes. The two on one on Osgood left his gloves and stick tied to the ice...
The Wings looked a little like the undisciplined Pistons for second taking long shots from the blue line instead of waiting for help from a fellow wing man to set to pass off to and confuse Turco...of course there weren't that many shot attempts to set up that way...
The pressure ia already on them so they need to score first and win game 6 on the road. No game 7's needed at the Joe this week.

This is Gary Bettman's league. The commish that defends officiating errors if they are to his advantage. They try to "promote rivalries" and that's why Wings fans get stuck with watching the likes of Columbus and Nashville 8 times a year and see some eastern conference teams only once a year and don't see the others at all. This NHL totally blows. And then they wonder why people stopped going to the games in Detroit. Sure, economics doesn't help, but who would want to buy a season ticket to see all that garbage and not see Toronto, Montreal, Rangers, etc?

It will be a test for both teams. Pittsburgh has very gifted offense and they are pretty deep up front. Their youth is their friend and their foe at the same time. They haven't had any adversity this playoff season and they sure will have their hands full with Wings. How they react will most likely define how this series will play out.
