Nice job, TheLow. You covered the highs and lows of the season, your research is great, and the coverage is deep.

I have one suggestion for improvement:

You need a jumpshot loving, offense worshiping, 3-point admiring, Flip Saunders disciple as a co-host. The Yin and the Yang, my friend.


For the record, I agree with almost all of your arguements.

The high points of the broadcast are The Low points.

This team busted ass for a championship in the 04 playoffs and almost another in 05, but the D and paint points that got them there have been sadly lacking in the last two ECF exits.

Though the Pistons take a lot of jumpshots, they were not built to be a jumpshooting team. Flip has tried to morph the team in that direction and it works sometimes, but that's not what they are. That's what bugs me most heading into the playoffs. Even our highest scorer (for the last 6 years) and best mid-range jumpshooter spends too much time at the 3-point line instead of running curls that are his bread-and-butter. Sheed's 3's are fun to watch, but the guy needs to spend more time in the paint in the playoffs.

After watching Tay cower when Lebron was running down the lane last ECF, I wondered where his heart went? Where was the guy that sacrificed his body to land in the opposing crowd making 'The Block' of all time in 04? What gives?...same guy...pretty much the same do-or-die playoff situation...yet a polar opposite reaction. Have the Pistons become that soft under Flip? Hopefully the youngsters haven't been around Flip long enough to adopt the mentality that he's imprinted the starters with and they will actually drive to the rim more than once a game...that is, assuming they get to play.

I never wanted Flip here in the first place, but was willing to give him a chance because Joe seemed to think he was the best option after canning LB. After the dismal failures in the last two ECF's, Flip has his last shot in the coming playoffs as far as I'm concerned. That once gaping window of opportunity is closing real fast for this team as we know it and failure cannot be afforded. Put up or adiós.

IMO the old "Going to Work" mantra left The Palace when Ben did. The Pistons need a new tagline to help inspire them to a successful conclusion of this season. I like what Low said best:

I think it's a statement worthy of a banner in the PF.com header for these playoffs. Adherence to it may be the only thing that saves Flip's job.

SCTLowMM, those are true winning ways of BBall. But that's not DetBBall. We are halfcourt guard orienated system. We would need an offensive center to go with Sheed to do iso's in the paint and put "washing machine" moves on guys.
But the good news is Bup-Bup and Stuck are taking it to the hole now and we are wiining at the right time.
The bench couldn't do that in the 64 win season.

sorry but it left before ben did... ben's last year here he was just as bad as the rest at using the "switch". this has been there best effort year all around in the last 3, which counts one with ben here. The kids are a big part of that.

I don't know if I agree with that. I think Ben's last year here was bad in large part to Flip's inability to maintain what LB had built in keeping Ben involved in the offensive flow. He essentially used the Cola method of "You got stand over there while we play." Flip has no idea what to do with any player that's not a scorer and it showed then and shows now.

I'm not saying that just to beat the LB drum again, but I just think it shows Flip for what he is: A better than avg head coach that doesn't have the coaching skills to win it all. Coaches like Flip are only contenders when they have the absolute best talent in the league on their roster. They don't get any more than what's expected from their players.

I'm not talking about iso's in the paint and waiting to see "Dream Shakes" against other teams.

What I'm saying is that in our "guard oriented" offense, our screens use to lead to drives. But now, they result in the screener and the screenie both fading back to 20 ft in opposite directions. Double teams on Sheed in the post used to result in 2 or 3 other guys cutting the lane for dump off passes. Not just an abandonment of all attempts to post the ball (which still haven't resurfaced even WITH the departure of the malcontent). For all the talk of "moving the ball," this team looks a lot like it did during the Cola era, but without the suffocating defense. A lot of passes around the perimeter leading to, surprisingly, a jumper.

I'm sorry but I think the days you are hankering for are over. The NBA changed the rules so we couldn't hold teams to 70 points anymore.
You have to adjust for inflation if you will.
Despite the fact we only hold teams to 90.1 points per game now, that was still good enough for BEST in the league. Imagine living life as the Warriors or Nuggets who give up 107-108 PPG. Imagine our team trying to come up with that many points every night just to have a chance at winning.

I don't think you're alone in the fact you aren't a big believer in Flip. haha. :)

I do agree with the points in the paint thing. I've seen it a bit this season where the Pistons have been getting a favourable whistle at times, and the fact these guys are playoff veterans I expect they will get the whistle more often than other teams if they went to the basket, especially when playing against teams with little playoff experience. ie. Sixers, Magic, etc.
When it comes to playing team like Celtics, Spurs, etc, these favourable calls will probably go away but they just have to stick with it.

I wouldn't take too much stock in Krista's articles. She is is just there for the feel good stories, or the useless stats stories. She is not a real reporter.

I also think it's too easy to say we only lost in playoffs past because we shot too many jumpers. It was definitely a contributing factor, maybe the biggest one, but it wasn't the only one. There are a lot of jump-shooting teams out there, not just us. And I think this all comes back to the 'Pistons not having a superstar' thing. If you were to describe which teams score points in the paint you would probably describe teams like the Spurs, Suns, Cavs, Lakers, Celtics, Magic...
And what do they all have in common? Superstars. Superstars who are excellent at scoring in the paint, who get superstar calls, all that stuff...
We don't have one guy who will do that for you. And that's where we will always be fighting uphill when it comes to that area. Most Pistons fans will say we do have superstars, but in 90% of NBA fans, the officials, the league and Stern's eyes, we don't. Nobody wants us to win. We're boring. We aren't sexy, we aren't billboard material. At least the Spurs who are also boring have 1 superstar in Tim Duncan.

Nice broadcast, The Low. It kinda busted through my denial though. I mean I really don't trust the starters to not coast along and play risk-averse ball. Which I think they can probably get away with until we hit Boston. Then...all bets are off.

Low I listened to your Podcast tonight after the game. Boy did some of the points you brought up come into fruition. I wished it had been live so I could call in to agree with you....especially if it had been after the game.

The PIP were about even tonight, (44-39 Sixers I believe) but we could have used more ourselves in the end and stopped a few of theirs when scored they 16 of their first 21 via that route in quarter # 1. The Pistons a team missed 50 shots tonights...I am sure the graphics will tell you that most were outside the paint, but I know there were at least 8 layups/bunnies including the two that CB and Shed missed in crunch time.

If Flip can't set up or enforce upon his team to tora, tora , tora > attack, attack, attack the rim as you indicated then it will be time for him to his the road. We definitely won't beat Boston with out those easy buckets because they will get more easy buckets than Philly got tonight.>>>> and Flip will be gone by draft day~~~
