The Warriors need to replace D-diddy with a big time player or they are toast for next season in the wild-wild west. If they missed the playoffs with Davis on the team, where do you think they fall with out him or a replacement allstar caliber player? The will be looking up the standings from day 1.

If Brand wants a chance to at least get to the playoffs, he may be better off taking less money an staying pat in LA. Their starting five looks good next season, but the bench is young and a has some old vets who may be to old.

Brand opting out makes him unrestricted. In that sense he does help GS, because the Clippers cant just "match" the offer and keep him. I think the Clips can go over the cap, as DBA has mentioned (bird rights), but will they want to pay dollar for dollar lux tax to keep him around?

And even if they do, remember that Brand is Unrestricted, so he is still free to go wherever he wants, even if the Clips are willing to match, he can sign a vets minimum contract to be a Spur and theres nothing LA can do about it.

Obviously Roscoe knows this stuff already, alot of this is for the benefit of curious minds and roscoes post seemed to provide a suitable segue.

The reason the Warriors can offer two players big deals is because an "offer" is all that it is. An offer doesnt count against the cap, so whomever accepts it first wins, and then the other offers fall off the table.

Remember that the signing period has not started yet so nothing is contractually binding and, much like the song from Indiana Jones, "Anything goes".

I have to give props to Chris Mullin for countering the Clippers dirty pool with some sharking of his own. Hearing about his retaliatory offer put the biggest smile of the week on my face.

Also, I would have to look at the Clippers salary and determine if renouncing both Elton and Corey were part of their plans to make the Baron davis signing possible.

If this is the case then that would mean that they could not go over the cap to resign Brand, and they would not be able to offer him as much as Golden State could.

To explain it further, exceptions and prorated salaries of free agents count against a teams salary until they are renounced, therefore, a team that appears to be under the cap may not actually have that money to spend outright.

In order for a team to actually have the full benefit of that capital to offer a free agent they would have to first "renounce" their claim to any exceptions (MLE, vets minimum) and any of their restricted free agents.

This would make their free agents unrestricted, the team would also lose Bird rights, and the team would lose any ability to go over the salary cap in order to sign them.

I know its older, but I was trying to establish an ambiance, a sort of milieu if you will.

The CBA is the ultimate in NBA geekiness. if you can understand the exceptions and stuff, it's like ascending to a higher (or descending to a lower if you will) plane.

Well apparently my estimation of the Clippers situation was right on the money.
