The NFL free agency period officially started at 12:01 am today. Ozarkruffrider has created a thread for Lions Free Agency activity here. Please feel free to post non Lions free agent signings in this thread.
The Eagles hit the ground running today, signing CB Asante Samuel to a 6 year, $57 million deal. Eagles sign free-agent cornerback Samuel to six-year deal
The Cleveland Browns have re-signed QB Derek Anderson to a 3 year, $26 million deal. Browns agree to deal with QB Anderson, close to trade for DT Williams
San Francisco has been active today. Really old WR Isaac Bruce has signed with the San Francisco Mike Martzs for 2 years and $6 million. ESPN - Bruce signs two-year, $6 million deal with 49ers - NFL Martz has also stolen the Lions' walk-on backup QB, J.T. O'Sullivan, signing him to a contract. (I'm too lazy to find the details for this one. Who cares though really) The 49ers have also signed RB Deshaun Foster to a 1 year deal. Apparently Foster didn't read the memo that Mike Martz doesn't like to run the ball and that San Fran already has a guy named Frank Gore ahead of him who won't be getting many touches.
San Fran continues their wheeling and dealing, signing DE Justin Smith to a 6 year, $45 million deal.
The Steelers re-signed QB Ben Roethlisberger to a retardedly large 8 year, $102 million deal with $36 million in guaranteed money. ESPN - Roethlisberger gets more than $36 million in guarantees in new deal - NFL That's a lot of money and a lot of years.
Adjusted for inflation, that's about $4 million in 1913 dollars. They always talk about the clubs and records in nominal dollars, and it annoys the beejeezus out of me. The increases in the money supply which causes price inflation makes larger contracts a natural consequence, not necessarily real growth in player salaries. :nerd2:
yea.... gas costs just a quick example.... what we pay at the pump has tripled since 1979, but take inflation into it and gas prices are about the same as they were.... Gasoline Price History players are making huge amounts more then they used to... but not as much in real dollars at it first appears.
The guaranteed money NFL players get now was a taboo 5 years ago. Excuse me, you complain about player real money! What about me, my salary hasn't changed since 1913. A gallon of gas hurts me like a $500.00 ticket.
At the rate the FED is printing money and devaluing the currency, it's going to be peanuts in REAL terms by the end of the contract. Heck, there might even be a chance that he makes less (purchasing power) in higher nominally valued years than he does in lower valued but earlier paid years. HOW SCREWED UP IS THAT!
The Falcons are close to trading CB DeAngelo Hall to the Raiders for a 2nd round pick. ESPN - Source: Falcons to trade Hall for Raiders' second-round pick in '08 draft - NFL I wouldn't mind sending our 2nd round pick to the Falcons for Hall, since Millen will just waste it anyway.
