East Lansing — Michigan State is trailing Michigan in sheer numbers for the 2012 recruiting class, but on Sunday, the Spartans landed a big-time player out of Ohio.

Se'Von Pittman, a defensive end from Canton McKinley High, made a verbal commitment to Michigan State and coach Mark Dantonio, according to Rivals.com and Scout.com.

Pittman, a four-star recruit according to both Rivals and Scout, turned down offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida and Ohio State.

The 6-foot-5, 245-pound pass rusher is the No. 8 defensive end and the No. 61 player overall in rankings from Rivals. Scout says he is the No. 11 defensive end in the nation, and ESPN.com ranks him No. 101 in their ESPNU 150.

Pittman is the sixth player to make a verbal commitment to Michigan State for 2012. He joins Elite 11 quarterback Tyler O'Connor, linebacker Riley Bullough, tight end Evan Jones and offensive linemen Zach Higgins and Benny McGowan.
