They need someone to keep Calvin from triple coverage. either a wr or revamp the oline and rb...wr seems cheaper

Yeah but they could have kept Chucky Rogers or Mike Williams if that's the case.

Oh man. I was procrastinating on opening this thread because I was afraid that I'd read something like that.

I need to completely disconnect myself from Detroit Lions football. My goal is to see them on TV someday and have the same emotional response as when I see Fresno St playing Utep in volleyball.

Looks like Bosh had 40 sacks from 5 years ago, then 3 last year. I wonder if the loss of Haynesworth had anything to do with that ?

I think what our real concern should be is, what to do about the Bears signing of JPeppers.
    -
And if Suh and Nhang? are the real deal, we better not be trying to punk our way out drafting one.

It's hard for me to be on board with the Lions.

    Why you ask???

Because players with the Lions don't play as big as their paychecks.
We sign players to these huge numbers, and then they go and stink up the joint.
    (SEE DOMINIC RAIOLA)
There have been only 2 players in the last 20 years who affected the outcome of games, and they were Barry and Mel Grey. The rest became just the rabble that is all too familiar around here. Please don't name any of the WRs of the 90s, because without Barry drawing the attention of the WHOLE defensive unit, these guys woulda had ordinary seasons.

It beats the heck outta what the Lions wear. Blue (with a yellow stripe down their backs).

The Lions had absolutely no choice, they HAD to get a legit #2 WR to take some of the pressure (and triple teams) off of Megatron. Especially since they have no running game to speak of.

I don't know if Nate is that guy, but he was the best available FA WR.

The issue with the Lions and receivers was DRAFTING FOUR OF THEM WITH TOP TEN PICKS IN FIVE YEARS!

It would be a horrible decision even if all 4 panned out, but the fact that 2 of them aren't even in the league anymore and only one of them is still on this team after only a few short years later is just absolute lunacy and set this franchise back a decade.

Just for fun, take THIS quiz and see how many 1st round draft picks that you can name from the "Millen Era" (aka the "Dork Ages").

A total of 9 first round picks in 8 seasons, with less than half of them still on the team. As pathetic as that is, Millen's record in rounds 2-7 are even worse.

Gee, I wonder why this team is so devoid of talent???

I missed the second pick of '04 and the pick in '06. And I haven't even been paying attention to the Lions for more than about 4 years. I'm too ashamed to brag, though.

If the other team is triple teaming your WR, then running the ball might be a valid counter... ah, who cares. Their between a chicken, an egg, a rock, and a hard place.

That's what I'm sayin. We need blockers and we halfta start some year.
Our 70 million dollar man will be out of the league in 3 years if he doesn't get protection.

I agree 100%, but just because we need help in those areas doesn't mean that they can't/shouldn't also upgrade the WR position.

The Lions need a LOT of help in a LOT of areas.

Their plan to pick the best player available is the route.

I counted 17 "needs" just before free agency. We only have 5 regulars who might be ligit Pro Bowlers. The rest are average or worse.

So, pick the best guy available who might be the most likely to make the Pro Bowl some day. And just keep doing that until, eventually, you have a roster full of them.

Use free agency to "upgrade" the roster, but you aren't going to get any Pro Bowlers from FA, only the draft!!!

With the hole Millen dug with his lousy drafting, it's going to take a few years of excellent drafting to make up for it.

You can go all the back to the Russ Thomas era and not find a really decent draft anywhere. Barry, Lomas, Herman, etc were the ocasional good pick, but last year's draft by Mayhew with 5 starters was by far the best we've done in a long, long time.

It takes me back to the Lions of my youth: Lary, Christianson, David, Schmidt, W. Walker, Bingaman, Hart, D. Walker, Layne, Box, etc.,etc.

    I agree. Good post, Jammer.

Burleson will not only take the pressure off Stafford and Johnson, he will make the entire offense better. They still need to address the offensive line.

If Burleson returns kicks for the Lions, too, this is a great signing. Detroit special teams were turrible last year.

5 starters by default. Probably true!

However, Delmas and Calvin are already Pro Bowl ready.

Stafford, Pettigrew, and Levy at least SEEM to have Pro Bowl potential. Time will tell with them. All the other starters are mediorce to poor.
Any help we can draft will be welcome. We've got a long way to go!
