Ditto on the Congratulations. My daughter almost applied there just to aggravate me. I told her not to be so sure she would get in and honestly I think they would have denied her. The 4th and final school she applied to was Stanford. They didnt let her in, of course. It's just as well. She preferred Florida. It would have caused a huge fight because not only is Stanford the better school academically but they also pay for almost every students tuition!!! I've been meaning to ask you to please say hello and give my best to G-man if you are in contact with him. He is missed.
I feel like it's at least twice as hard to get into schools now vs when I was entering (1995). I looked at the World population and it has doubled since I was born, so that probably has a lot to do with it, since American schools are accepting so many highly qualified foreign applicants. Kids definitely have to have their "stuff" together sooner these days if they want to get accepted at a competitive school. I remember walking into the SAT center blind, having never researched it, studied for it, etc. Homework was always a blow off. I hand wrote some of my college essays and whipped them out in a week for all schools. And while I was a bit of a slacker, the competition just wasn't that much then and it was all good enough. So, I'm honestly impressed that your kids were able to compete and succeed. If I had to do it over in today's environment, I probably would have screwed it up at that age.
My daughter is 12 years old and she's already concious of making choices (classes, extra curicular activites, etc.) in regard to her college resume. She's in freaking 6th grade! When I was in 6th grade, my primary concern was having the coolest bicycle in my neigborhood.
I was like you guys Tas and BDL. I screwed around in High School, but I always tell my wife how astonished I am the way kids actually try in school now and don't cut classes. I wish they would have cared back in my day. I would have tried much harder if they actually cared. But I knew I could skate by screwing off. Frankly, I needed the structure. But like you said, times have changed so much.
I was a solid "B" student. My daughter has never had anything below an "A" on a report card. ...not even an A-. I'm really proud of her and the fact that she's a sixth grader who's taking 8th grade classes and killing it.
My kids were both summa students in college and my wife was first in her class. I was a weak fourth at home. We never got a dog because I was sure I would then be the fifth smartest. I did get an engineering degree from U of M, but that didn't carry any weight at home. :-)
Congratulations, bills. My oldest daughter got her bachelors at UMAA a couple years ago. She got a job with UM and is now working on her masters...free of charge
When I look at this crew I have to wonder how our kids got so amazingly intelligent. In my case, I'm starting to suspect maybe Jim Harbaugh fathered my wife's children. Come to think of it... he went to U of M so he must be a brainiac. I don't mind being cuckolded by a pro quarterback so much, but I do wonder if I could sue his butt for retroactive child support???
That's the way to do it. I have a daughter who is an MSU grad....so things balance out. She got her Masters at Illinois and now works at UIC. My other daughter is a Bronco grad like me, now in grad school. I was kind of a listless apathetic student myself.
I did poorly in high school. Just goofed off. Had a 3.7 in undergrad, and a 3.92 in grad school though. My daughter graduated #1 in high school, and #1 at the University of Buffalo. I think she got a "B" once in 6th grade.......... She's an engineer.....and works as a project manager now...10 years after graduation.
I'm just impressed that you know how to correctly spell the words "listless" and "apathetic". You probably think they mean "macho" and "sophisticated". Maybe you shouldn't try to hang with the guys talking about academic success and intelligence? Would you like the link to the "bacon" thread?
