I think the 32 x 3 is a bad allocation of resources. Have to get rid of one. Not saying I have preference besides Drummond

    Me too.
Most logical thoughts say that the Pistons will wait until the start of next season and see how Smith is reacting. If he doesn't progress, then they have one less year on his contract that will become less restricted.
Monroe, more than likely, will be gone.
Unfortunately, the organization will have to pay for that loss these last few years, because of the absence of continuity and coherence.
One way or another, they will have to pay.

When you have the option, the best combination of those two on the night. So some nights smith gets 40 and Monroe get 28 and Drummond gets 28 etc.
it works well because you have the best option of the talent between them and the others get rest during the season (a la Spurs <30mins starters).
As long as it's not consistently 1 or 2 of the 3 getting all the minutes, then it's not a problem (except for the ego thing).

If it is such a great option then why don't other teams do it? Because they can't amass talent like the Pistons can?

Because they don't usually have two top 15 guys at their position on rookie scale contracts (Dre + Moose).

Monroe will command $12m in a pinch as an FA. Drummond is easily a max guy. Those three contracts would represent 70 odd % of the salary cap.

Sort of like ending your summation by stating, "all things being equal".
Of course, which they are not.

It would be foolish of me to suggest a draft choice because I haven't done any research on any of the prospects. I think our best bet is via a trade TBH.

I wasn't really suggesting that they each play 32.0 minutes. The "2/3 on the floor at all times" experiment was never done, and I think it can work. It could, and should, give us one of the most dominant front courts in the league.

For the record, I'm all in favor of keeping Moose. If we swap Moose for a SF, it'll be a lateral move at best. We need to somehow transform the plethora of marginal players and their contracts (Stuckey, JJ, Bynum, CV, Siva, Billups, Gigi etc etc) into 1 or 2 really good, productive players. If we don't get rid of the crap, but opt for swapping the bowl instead, we'll still be serving crap.

The Pistons role players can't contribute because they don't have roles to play. They too seemed more comfortable when Smith was out.

If the Pistons lose Monroe because they're stuck with Smith then they should name all the toilet stalls at the Palace after Joe.

And I think we can keep Monroe for 2 years until we are paying Drummond the max and play those three as rotating. Then, when Drummond is due his, we work out which of Smith or Monroe to keep at that time.

So @deldel, @The PandaThe Panda, you guys make it sound like the Pistons are fortunate to be in this situation.

    I just haven't seen it.

If we keep Toilet Stall we have to get rid of Jennings and swap Moose for something. I'd be ok with us giving him another shot if we get a coach that have the authority to get him under control. I don't want two chuckers and a gazillion tied up in the 3x32 min system. However, Detroit managing to hire this kind of coach, trading Moose for something worthwhile and getting rid of Jennings feels like a long shot.

Maybe Gores should take the money that he would otherwise spend on a GM and coach and invest it in further Palace infrastructure upgrades.

Here's the salary structure for the Pistons (from hoopshype):
Blue is player option, red is team option, and green is qualifying offer that can be given to rookie before they can become FAs

As you can see, Brandon Jennings' contract comes off the books the year we need to sign Drummond to his big contract, and Josh Smith will be in the last year of his contract that year as well. So, in theory, we can:
    • Keep Moose for now using the cap space from Rodney & CV departures
    • Use the cap space from Jennings' departure + a few other assets to sign Drummond in summer of 2016.
    • Trade Smith's expiring contract in 2016 for a point guard to replace Jennings

Meaning we get to watch the exact same team play 'basketball' for at least the next 2 years? How exciting!!

Once they develop some continuity they'll probably be good for 1-2 more wins.
