Maybe the clueless coaches that came before weren't the type of visionaries that could devise a winning strategy using a giant front line.

    Perhaps Stan is that visionary.

I don't even know what to say to this because it is just such a fundamental misunderstanding of how statistics are generated. You are the one cherry picking statistics. It's not even like you can make the argument that it is an insignificant sample size. You want those 673 minutes of small sample size, 5 variable outcomes to pollute the other information?

There are parameters set for a reason, it pulls together all the useful information. A line-up of Singler/Stuckey/KCP/Mitchell/Jerebko playing for 40 seconds in a blowout loss to XYZ is not relevant information to the question of how to best utilise Smith, Monroe and Drummond. But a line up of X/X/Smith/Monroe/Drummond playing for 40 seconds is relevant when the parameter = playing time, smith, monroe, drummond and is relevant in the context of the discussion.

    Stop shifting the goal posts.

So what is your point. Do you, or do you not, have a better idea vs. starting Monroe, Drummond, and Smith together, based on who is on the roster now, with data to back it up from last year. I suggest if you do not, you are just wasting your time arguing for the sake of arguing.

I still see nobody suggesting a particular front line, with any data to back up why. And further, if anyone is so sure Monroe should come off the bench, even though no data shows us being any better that way vs. Drummond coming off the bench, hey, at least state your opinion.

Again, there is no statistical data from last year that says we have a better option. So until we sign a different small forward, no use in wishing for something different when it is not available on the current roster.

Smith is a better player than all of these guys but I'm not so sure that he's a better SF then any of them.
I'm HOPING that our starting 3 has yet to be added to the roster.

We do have Cartier Martin, a true SF, on our roster, as well. Granted, he has always been a backup and there is probably a reason that he has been on 5 different teams in only 6 seasons. His per 36 minutes are not bad. At least he will add to the competition, I hope.

Hey, I don't see any controversy in this post. I know, you probably hit send before you were finished and then had to run off and do something. Anyway, remember, we did add Cartier Martin.

Cartier Martin might be the right guy, since he can shoot the ball quite effectively from outside. You start him with Meeks, and voila, two decent shooters out there to help spread the floor, giving our bigs space to work. Now, we have seen Jennings can hit a three, but not always with consistency. Smith too can hit some from the outside. Even Monroe can on occasion at least nail a midranger. In all, you got some shooting talent going with the starting unit of Jennings, Meeks. Wait. Strike that. I believe Augustin has better stats on his outside shooting than Jennings. So hey, go with Augustin, Meeks, Martin, Smith, Monroe.

For a bench, use JJ sparingly at small forward, but use Smith there a bit too. Drummond spells Monroe and Smith as needed.

Jennings and KCP are the backup guards.

Now work out a plan to get Butler minutes that will suit his age. Maybe play him 2 games a week, where all of Martin, Smith, and JJ lose minutes to him on these nights. If we can go thru the season keeping Butler off the injury list, any playoff run could see him expand his role.

Any combination of the two is better than the three together. Have you not been following this discussion at all?

And we have shown you that statistical data, you are just choosing to ignore it or discount it on thoroughly baseless grounds.

    Good point. Forgot about him.

Does this mean that you are now giving up on playing the "big 3" together?

Probably not a good sign that many of us are forgetting that this guy is on the team.
ESPN doesn't even have him listed on the Pistons roster so it's not like I'm the only one underwhelmed by the guy.

Hilarious. Maybe Charlie V should consider this sort of idea.

I know they offered him the contract, but I was still under the impression that he and Gray had not officially signed yet, for whatever reason. Probably to keep roster spots open / money for Monroe. Not sure.

I only mention this because it would explain why ESPN.com does not have them listed on the roster, because technically they are not, even though we know they are.
