Michigan loses 3 starters from last years elite eight team in Stauskus, GRobIII and Mitch McGary. Also backup big man, Jon Horford transfers out.

Caris Levert, Zack Ervin, Spike Albrect, and Derrick Walton Jr return with some key freshman to see if they can finish in the top 5 in the conference after losing 5 players to the NBA in the last 2 seasons.

They start the season ranked 24th and are currently 2-0 after beating Bucknell and local power Hillsdale College.

I am watching today's game vs the Detroit Titans in Ann Arbor on the Big 10 Network and all of the Wolverine starters came out in long white stockings...looking kind of silly...maybe they are trying to start a new dress trend ala the Fab Five and their long shorts.

Juwan Howard Jr is leading the attack for the Titans who are playing even with the small Wolverines by making their threes.

Titans lead Wolverines 28-27 at the half.

Wisconsin looks to be the cream of the Big Ten crop this year.

After that, 2nd place seems to be up for grabs between UM, MSU, Ohio, and Nebraska. Perhaps Iowa, Minnesota, etc?

Michigan gets a scare from the Detroit Titans as they pulled away from them after the score was tied at 52. They finished the game on a 19-10 run to get their third W of the season. 71-62. They look shakey and small, so I am not sure how they will fair in conference play.

LeVert still over dribbles and Ervin just stands in the corner waiting to launch a 3. At least Stauskus drove to the hoop when they covered him on the wing.

The Titans, Juwan Howard Jr looked good from three, but seems that all he wants to do is shoot threes. In fact he had a Kobe like performance scoring 24 points on 23 shots (9/23 shooting.)

In the end, UM just wore UD down and had more horses than Detroit could match up with at crunch time.

For those of you that were sleeping, it was a game of runs and Wolverines come up on the short end losing 60-55 to Villanova.

The Wolverines looked out of it for awhile being shut out in the last 7 mins of the first half and eventually fail down by 13. (33-20) the first 3 minutes of the second half. The Wolves then outscored the Wildcats 31-8 and looked to win the game going away up 51-43 with less just over 6 mins to go. ........but then they went scoreless for the next 4 minutes when it counted and allowed Villanova to go on a 8-0 run to tie the score 51-51 with about 2.5 minutes left in the game. The teams traded hoops and Michigan had a chance to put in the potential game winner with less than 8 seconds, but Zack Ervin was blocked at the rim on what appeared to be a perfect in bounds pass under the hoop......but an even better block by the Wildcats big man Pinkston.

The Wolverines led 55-54 with just under 3o seconds left and had the ball. A long pass down court was fielded by one of the freshman but before he could get it in the hands of one of the sure handed foul shooters, he was fouled and miss the front end of a one and one. The Wildcats grabbed the board and went down to the other end and was fouled and scored on 2 free throws to go up 56-55. Michigan had no time outs left having wasted them on a couple of inbound attempts during the first 2 minutes of the second half....so they were forced to in bound it and take it down the court with less than 15 seconds and the ball was knocked out of bounds on the baseline by the Cats. The refs gave the Wolverines a break by calling a time out to review the out of bounds play and the play set up by John B almost worked. The Wolverines were forced to foul after the Wildcats grabbed the blocked shot and Villanova proceeded to put in 4 more free throws in the last 4 seconds to win by five. Tough loss by the Wolverines who looked superior to the favored Wildcats midway through the second half. A win tonight would have lifted them to at least top 15, but the close loss proves that they are better than we thought they would be despite losing the three NBA scrubs.

Good recap. Not the outcome that we wanted, but that was a GREAT college basketball game. It should help them prepare for some of the B1G battles coming soon.

And remember, rankings dont matter this early in the season but STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE does. All we need to do is hope Villanova has a great season!

Need to make this sticky. It's kinda lost in this "Other Hoops"
M needs to be a strong Bball school again, with the failings of the football team so sad.
    Get some respect !

I think UM gets the respect they deserve. John Beilein has done an amazing job (Big Ten titles, consistent NCAA appearances, etc.) bringing credibility back to the program.

If you listen to any of the national analysts talking about programs or coaches, the Wolverines and Beilein (2014 Big Ten Coach of the Year) are usually in the discussion.

The Wolverines held on to beat the Syracuse Orangemen, 68-65, avenging the championship loss of two years ago. They led 58-51 with just over 4 minutes left in the game only to see Orange put together a 12-5 run to tie the game with a minute left to make 63-63.......Spike hit a three with about 30 seconds left to put the Wolverines up 3....and the fans went and announcers went wild!!.

The Orangemen get a quick score to make a one point game with 20 seconds left...M dodged a foul there as the Orange could have gone to the line we got the home court advantage

After a couple of fouls, the Wolverines went to the line for a one and one FTA....Walton misses it, and the Cuse grabbed the board...and they throw it out bounds.

M gets the ball back and is fouled with 12 seconds left and another chance for a one and one ...and Levert misses that one... This time the Orangemen .grab the board and come down with a chance to win and you guessed it...they turn it over again with 4.5 seconds. Levert grabs the loose ball, is fouled and this time makes both ends of the one and one to extend the lead to 3. Syracuse is short on a possible game tying 3 and 17th rank M wins the game to go to 6-1.

The win is # 4 for the Big 10 vs 0 losses in the annual Big10/ACC challenge.

Two former Pistons felt it was better to see their alma mater play in Ann Arbor than see their former pro team play in Auburn Hills, so there was Dave Bing and Derrick Coleman sitting together in their Syracuse gear.

There was also large portly man sitting behind them cheering with a blue and gold bag over his head......I think it was Brady Hoke.

What a contrast to the Pistons game which I taped and fell asleep watching later. Spike took over this game, made a couple of nifty passes and hit some big shots. The Doyle kid looked pretty good too. The crowd was a bit more lively than the one at the Palace too...except DC and Bing didn't look very enthused. After Spike hit the big three at the end the camera focused in on the crowd and right on my son going wild with the rest of them.

Kentucky is doing the same thing...great players leaving early and recruits falling right into place....The Wolverines seem to be just one player short each season of getting over the hump....

Just think if M had retained Burke or even Tim Jr, they would have been favored to win last year and possibly this year if at least Stauskus or Mitch had stayed. Or even little dog

I don't think they were a player short when they lost in the National Championship game just a year ago.

They will be good this year, but maybe not top 10 in the country type good....probably a player short. :)

Short meaning the only big men that played were all either partially injured or foul or foul proned so that they were alway getting out rebounded. ( McGary, Morgan and Jon Horford....and no senior leadership with Zak Novak and Stu Douglass graduating the year before.
