ESPN - Philadelphia 76ers fire coach Maurice Cheeks, sources say

These coaches are droping like flies. I think Philly has a lot of young kids so it is going to take some time. Brand also is not putting up the numbers he had been before he was injured. Also you have to wonder if coming to the East where they play more defense has caused Brands numbers to be down.

    Strange move.

Stefanski gave him extension last year and now fires Cheeks after ~20 games? It's a normal thing that 76ers started slow under Cheeks.

dumb move for the 76ers imo. they are a different team w/brand...should've at least let it play out...cheeks had them playing very well heading into the playoffs last year.

if your team shows potential and beats the Pistons one nivht and then loses your next couple of games then your coaching days are numbered and that is what happen to Cheeks and fired Twolve coach Rany Wittman.

With Sam Mitchell , Eddie Jordan, and PJ Carlisimo already biting the dust earlier this season, someone should start a poll (in jest) to see who should will be next or will eventually get the canned in the the next four weeks.

You can start with these candidates
Mike Dunleavy?? naw he is the GM so he is probably safe

Reggie Theus >his key player Kevin Martin has been injured but he is still on thin ice

    Larry Brown...he is probably safe

Don Nelson... he is probably safe

Scott Brooks at Memphis > he is already the interim coach

Jim O'Brien @ Indiana good wins over Celtics and lakers, but inconsistent

Scott Skiles at Milwaukee ..not sure

Terry Porter with impatient Steve Kerr at the helm, you never know

Michael Curry ....Joe gives every coach at least 2 years, but the other guys won at least 50 games before being canned:thumb[1]:

Well, this is what people want with Curry right? It's one thing to be mad at the coach, it's another thing to wake up Saturday morning to find that your championship hopeful franchise has surrendered the season before Xmas.

I always thought Cheeks was overrated. He wasn't particularly good in Portland either.

Cheeks is overrated, but so is Brand IMO. I'm not sure they will fare any better not. The pieces on that team don't fit.

On a side note, I cannot tell you how thankful i am Theo is not on this team anymore.

If the Pistons continue to struggle, i don't think Curry will go (even if he should) b/c of his relationship with Joe.

Wow, they've kept him a long time and they have had worst seasons in the past were he should've been fired but he didn't. It's amazing how teams owners are firing their head coaches after they seem like they are kinding making the team work together and get it together. I don't understand that at all. It makes no sense and you are right Ik#1, it was a strange move.

Depends on what his contract says, but usually he gets the remainder of his salary owed, even if it is for future years.

When Flip Saunders came to the Pistons, it was my understanding that the Timberwolves paid his first year's salary in Detroit. That may or may not be true.

It does depend on the contract. Some contracts are guranteed meaning if you get canned you get the remaining money for the years of the contract. Some organizations pay this money up front upon termination and then some pay the money over the life of the contract. Some contracts are structured so that as long as the coach is out of work they get paid, but if they take another head coaching job then they are no longer owed money on the future years of the contract. This is why some organizations would not pay the money owed on the remaining years of the contract up front.

If a coach does not have a guaranteed contract he is more likely to be fired more faster than a coach that does. BTW for those wondering Curry has a guranteed deal.

and Another bites and another one bites....this time it's pretty boy Reggie

ESPN - Sources: Sacramento Kings fire Reggie Theus; Kenny Natt is interim coach

Umm, did I mention this about 10 posts back, about Kevin Martin's injury may or may not be a factor.

So that's Mitchell, Theus, Rivers and Randy Wittman.

    4 coaches during the season.

That's a pretty high turnover rate, considering 1 or 2 more might get axed before year end.

"The Kings are the second team to make a coaching change immediately after losing to New York. Washington dismissed Jordan on Nov. 24 after a loss at Madison Square Garden."

That late run to make the game close must have saved Curry.

Even though it might be better if the league does forget about him, don't forget PJ.

Any more before Christmas? Jim O'Brien, or Scott Skiles?

If the GM's are tanking the season, then Joe needs to be on the phone with all of them to see who else they are willing to part with...

Does anyone here think that McFail, oops McHale would be next? The owner indirectly fired him as the GM since McHale started the mess in Sota. By coaching the team, he'll understand that no coach in this world will turn this team into a winning team after what he has done.
