The Secret to Joe Dumars' Brilliance - Sports Blog - The FanHouse

As is oft repeated, Joe Dumars is a genius. He's one questionable draft pick from a dynasty, arguably. (Darko ruins everything.) And he just keeps on plugging away.

Chris McCloskey of the Detroit News says the Pistons are close to locking up Amir Johnson for about $3 million a year. Just two weeks ago, people were using Amir's name and the full midlevel in the same sentence. But no one has made Johnson an offer (as far as the known world knows, at least). Why? McCloskey explains:
Joe Dumars has made it clear across the league that he was matching any offer for Johnson, so teams have pretty much stayed away.
Sound familiar? This is exactly what happened with Chauncey Billups, and Dumars locked him up with the most reasonable contract imaginable. So Dumars -- by using the media to insist he won't let his free agents get away at any cost -- gets his free agents at reduced costs.

(It's a win for the local reporters, too, because they get to watch Amir Johnson for the next three years.)

Veteran NBA swingman Morris Peterson is ready to play for a winner - and that team apparently doesn't reside in Toronto, home of what is likely to become Peterson's former team, the rebuilding Toronto Raptors.Peterson is scheduled to meet with the Utah Jazz shortly and the smooth shooting lefty reiterated his desire to play for a winning team after years of losing with the Raptors. This comes just a few months after the Raptors won the Atlantic Division for the first time in franchise history, but lost to the Nets in the first round of the playoffs.
"I'm going to their facility in the morning to talk with ownership, general manager Kevin O'Connor and people on the coaching staff and in the front office," Peterson said in a telephone interview with AP. "Since I have some control as a free agent, I really want to play with a winner, like the Jazz, and with a team that believes in me."
Peterson, 29, said that several other teams, including the Detroit Pistons, New Jersey Nets, Cleveland Cavaliers, New Orleans Hornets, Miami Heat and Raptors have all inquired about his services after spending his entire seven-year career north of the U.S. border.

So, the Pistons did officially contact Mo Pete. We'll see if it goes anywhere.

Since 1999, the Spurs have won four NBA championships, 445 regular season games, 88 playoff games, 16 Finals games, and six division titles. No other team in the same time period could make a similar claim. During this stretch, the Spurs averaged about 55 wins per season.
The Spurs have drafted well — including David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Sean Elliot, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobli, Beno Udrih, and Fabricio Uberto. They have a classy, well-respected coach in Gregg Popovich. Three key players (Duncan, Parker, Ginobli) are under contract through 2011, meaning they will probably have another run at the title. Fan attendance and support is solid. Overall, the Spurs have all the makings of a dynasty. In fact, only three other franchises own more titles than the Spurs — the Celtics (16), Lakers (14), and Bulls (6), with each team considered a dynasty in their own respects.
Yet, are they really in the same class as these other dynasties?

Yeah but Mo says he has no other visits scheduled so he will be at home in Flint slumming. Joe needs to either fly him out to Vegas to meet privately or set up a conference call with him and his agent to see exactly what he is looking for. (before somebody else does).

Now, that's funny. They got rid of their best defender in Darko. Who is going to play D on that team? Howard is going to block some shots and grab some boards, but who else can step up? They're not going to be able to stop anybody.

Howard spends a lot of time avoiding foul trouble, for good reason. You're right though, they are collecting a bunch of offensive players who don't seem interested in defending.

Nelson/ Turk/ Arroyo/ Reddick/ Lewis/ etc.

On the other hand, Darko also spent a lot time trying to avoid whistles.

Battie and Outlaw are average defenders.

Glad we don't have that problem.

It's easier to teach defense to an offensive player than it is to teach offense to a defensive player.

You either have a jump shot and/or a crossover, or you don't. Not too many guys pick up those skills a couple years into their careers.

I don't mind resigning CWebb, but only as the backup center who can provide 10-15 mintes when needed and definitely would need to be pulled as soon as the opposing team exploits his lack of D. Of course the next question is do we have a spot available if we decide to bring four from Vegas to the big leagues and another possible FA. It would mean dumping Dupree, not signing Double D and moving Hunter to the bench as the extra coach.

Terry Porter has led a blessed life.

Blessed by God-given ability, yes ... but also earned through hard-work and diligence, a striving for excellence that has landed him on the bench of the Detroit Pistons, a team that vanquished him and his Portland Trail Blazers over a decade and a half ago.

Today, he's running the show in Las Vegas at the NBA Summer League, while one of the guys he had to guard in the 1989 NBA Finals -- Pistons President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars -- now has his back from the catbird seat up in the stands.

With head coaching experience in Milwaukee under his belt, and another stint as an assistant, you can't help but think T.P. is all but ready for another swing at being the skipper. Many, including this writer, felt that chance was back in Sacramento ... a job that went to former Sacramento Kings player Reggie Theus.

Yet Porter seems content to continue his education under Dumars and head coach Flip Saunders.

I caught up with him after his Pistons had just edged the Washington Wizards.

Some people find it hard to believe that Bill Laimbeer, once the most reviled player in the NBA -- outside of Detroit, of course -- coaches women's basketball.
The man who put the bad in the Detroit Pistons' Bad Boys, who was notorious for his whining and flopping, and whose well-placed elbows and subtle hip checks earned him a reputation as the roughest, if not dirtiest, player in the league, has been the guiding force behind the WNBA's Detroit Shock for 4 1/2 seasons.
Those wondering how his rough-and-tumble NBA act would translate to the WNBA need only look at his success. A year after he took over an 0-10 Detroit team in 2002, the Shock won the league title and Laimbeer was named coach of the year. Last season, the team won another title and is favored to win it again this year.

Q. Are you happy with the signing of free agent Darko Milicic?
A. Absolutely. I'm happy with everything we've done so far. Both of those guys -- Milicic and Mike Conley -- can run. A guy (Detroit's Joe Dumars) who I think is one of the best judges of talent in this league drafted Darko No. 2 ahead of some very good players. He's a young guy and still has a chance to really develop with playing time and in the right system. He has a chance to show his potential here. I hope we would have picked a real talent for a very reasonable price. He can make himself an All-Star in this league. It's his job now to show it or not show it. In this league, it's up to the player. But he's now on a team that's a more open team, which fits his style. He's going to get all of the time he can stand and that will give him a chance to show who he really is.

The Golden State Warriors have been relatively quiet since the free agent moratorium has been lifted and the reason is simple: the Warriors are waiting to see what their needs actually are before possibly overpaying for a role player. The big names in free agency have found their homes, but the Warriors were never really in the running for any of them in the first place. The team's primary need is a ball-handling swingman and they met with representatives for free-agent forward James Posey this weekend (more on that later).
League sources maintain that the Warriors are taking a wait-and-see approach in acquiring another player this offseason. They have several means of netting someone who can provide an immediate impact: the team still has both its Mid-Level Exception of $5.3-million and its Bi-Annual Exception of $1.8-million, can offer Mickael Pietrus in a sign-and-trade deal, and has a sizeable trade exception of $9.9-million acquired from the Draft Night Jason Richardson deal. The Warriors are currently committed to just over $54-million in salary.
As can be seen with many teams shying away from using the MLE, the Warriors do not want to risk giving that much money to a player that does not pay off anywhere near their salary. Last year, Nazr Mohammed, Vladimir Radmanovic, and Jared Jeffries were given the MLE and none of them were considered significant contributors to their teams. Value can be found for the exception, such as when the Pistons used it on Antonio McDyess a few years ago, but there are more misses than hits.

The U.S. hasn’t won the title at the Pan American Games since 1983 when a guy named Michael Jordan led the team. Jordan went on to bring the U.S. a gold medal in the 1992 Olympics as a member of the original Dream Team.
But even Dream Teams, which consist of NBA players, have failed to win international championships in recent years. In 2004, Team USA was dethroned from the Olympic champion seat for the first time since 1992. The last gold medal for Team USA at the FIBA World Championships came in 1994.
We Americans are making a huge deal out of this, as though it is a national crisis — just like we did when we lost in the World Baseball Classic. People in this country say that the U.S. cannot win in their own sports anymore.
So why is this happening to U.S. basketball?

Here's an interesting opinion. The guy thinks that someone like Nazr could actually put Suns over the top:

The Suns still seem to be about one move away from being taken seriously as a contender. I am not so sure that move is Brown. It may be another team's throwaway, like Nazr Mohammed or even a Jerome James. Who cares that they can't run with the team -- aren't the other four horsemen of the apocalypse the ones who do the most damage on offense anyhow? Let that big fifth guy block shots and hang back to divert fast breaks. Sure, maybe Sean Marks can do that ... but wouldn't Suns fans much rather have had Channing Frye back in Arizona instead of Portland having a 1-2 punch at the '5' all of a sudden? The Suns STILL need a big man and a back-up point. Well, maybe next year ... maybe next year. Leaves us something to hope for, I guess.
