There is a reason there is a discount for uncertainty, it's not something that's added for just for fun. The next tv rights deal, possible expansions etc are already included in the valuations, that's why the extra earnings Gores gets for waiting until after the next CBA is because he takes all the risk. Ofcoure if Gores knows something about the future CBA, expansions jada jada the market don't, he can beat the valuations by waiting or sellning now. I might be wrong here but I doubt you are more informed than the market though, which is why it doesn't make any sense to claim that selling at one point is more ideal than selling at some other point in time.

I know why discount rates are included.

Yes, the next tv deal is included. But it's value has been discounted by the discount rate. The closer you get to the new tv rights deal being implemented, the smaller the compound effect. The more that is known about the next tv deal, the smaller the discount rate. That is why he would be stupid to sell now, rather than after it is implemented.

I'm not saying I know more about the market than anyone. But expansion teams will dilute NBA related revenue. CBA's generally increase that revenue and increase the value of teams. TV rights increase revenue. So selling after the two revenue increasing items and before the dilution makes sense from a finance perspective. Reality is, NBA teams are a sellers market.

Would be interesting if someone like Paul Allen (after expansion) just said screw it and routinely lived with a massive luxury tax to overpay all the best players.

These two statements doesn't compute. You are disregarding the reason for why there is a discount rate.

    This is interesting too:
Pistons hire head hunter Jed Hughes to help with GM search - Detroit Bad Boys
This might mean that we'll get a more stats-oriented GM.

NBA: T-Wolves coach Adelman retires after 23 seasons - Yahoo Sports Singapore
The Pistons beat him 1990 Finals, the Bulls beat him in the 1992 finals.....he got hosed by the refs in the 2000 WC Finals when the Lakers stole it from the his CWebb led Kings.. great coach where ultimate championship eluded him.

The discount rate is about two things - time value of money and uncertainty. So it's essentially two parts - the interest rate component and the risk component. By reducing uncertainty, you reduce the discount rate. By reducing the time period, you reduce the effect. So when we are talking about one specific component of a valuation (the TV rights deal), yes this is how it works.

Are you guys still looking for discounts?
I get the feeling this is one of those threads which will end up in a discussion about daylight savings time. Or Abraham Lincoln. Or cabbage...

Bill, YOU should know better too. If you look at Pf.com rule 143.7a you will realize that one post off topic is ok. But two or more is considered hji-jacking.

Btw: I'm sitting in the passenger seat at a KFC drive thru waiting on grilled chicken. That picture made me crave it!

When did Forbes start doing more than basketball articles?

The Pistons should put these quotes up in the practice facility.
