Let me sum it up like this: I think you win football games by running North/South. I think Barry went East/West too much to the detriment of his team. I think you win football games by winning the Turnover battle. I think Brett Favre threw too many picks trying to make something happen to the detriment of his team. I think the stats support my arguements: Barry is the all-time leader in negative yards. Brett Favre is the all-time leader in interceptions thrown. These things make me think that Barry and Brett are overrated. But I guess we can agree to disagree.
I could care less about Brett "Fav-Rah". I'll let G-man hold down that argument. I'm totally down with your idea of agreeing to disagree. IMO, Barry did more with less than any football player in his era and perhaps history. ...and as for the "classless way he retired and screwed the Lions". The Lions had it coming if you ask me. Barry was a once in a lifetime talent and WCF did absolutely NOTHING to support him and put pieces around him that coulda helped the team win.
Re: Clean up after yourself Who is Jeff Gordon? I never heard of him. I also never bought a 30-pack of Busch Light at Wallmart. BTW ~ I apologize for this comment. I am aware that may stir up the hornets nest, but I couldn't help myself. I hate NASCAR. It isn't a sport if you can't get a groin pull.
Re: Clean up after yourself Yeh, I hear ya dressing..Dale Earnhardt never pulled a groin muscle.... No need to cough-up window dressing apologies, the comment speaks volumes.
Barry Sanders overrated? Wow. Emmitt Smith averaged more fumbles per season than Barry, I guess that counts as a negative play too, since that hurts the turnover battle. I guess that makes Emmitt overrated too.
Yeah, I can fully understand the Smith vs. Sanders debate (I vote Barry), but this thread has taken a turn for the ridiculous, IMO.
At least Barry had the sense to realize that there was more to life than money and awards. Every professional sports player wants at least one or both of those and some take drugs to extend out a career that should have ended a few years back. Then again some continue play for fame and to see and hear their names called forever...... (Larry Holmes, Brett Favre etc) The fans and media can take some blame for encouraging them to stay past their prime for their own selfish reasons and gains.... I think fans wanted MJ to play longer than he did, thinking basketball would die with no Bird and Magic or MJ to carry the NBA into the new millennium.
While I really hated the way he left the game, I must admit that I'm impressed with the fact that he has actually stayed retired. No Favre-esque flip flopping. No Jordanian comebacks. No Emmit Smith like dragging out of his career. He walked away from the game at the height of his career, on the verge of becoming the all-time rushing leader and never looked back. Barry really was one of a kind.
Jim Brown retired at 29 playing only 9 seasons and probably could have played 3 more but stayed retired and went to Hollywood...
Re: Bo Jackson was the Man could be argued best athlete ever.... boy did that boy get double helpings when they passed out natural talent. To bad he was injured before a long career could happen.
