Oh wow. For some reason, this is really unexpected. I know he was sick, but still . . .

    RIP :(

you could kind of get the sense that he hasn't been doing well...i haven't seen him at a pistons game this year, and i hardly saw him there in the playoffs last year too.

i dunno what else to say except thanks for being an excellent owner and providing the fans with championships and quality entertainment for so long.

Yeah, wow. I didn't know that he was sick.

A few months ago, I asked who would get the team when he died. Looks like it came a bit sooner than expected. I think somebody said that his family would assume ownership. Will there be large changes? Will Zeke come back? Will Laimbeer get hired as coach? Will Tom Wilson remain or will he go back to shooting Partridge Family episodes?

The jazz just lost their owner too.

I'm certainly saddened by the news. I think that overall he was a very good owner and I'm thankful to him for all of the great years.

Man, that is a real downer. I would like to see the Pistons dedicate this season to him and win a title.

Thanks BillD. I've given you some crap over the years but know that I've appreciated what you've done for the Pistons. Rest in peace.

Yeah the last time I remember seeing him at a game was during the 50 greatest Pistons ceremony last season....and then I saw him at the HOF induction event. Both times he was in a fancy electronic wheel chair and a designer sweat suit....

Pistons will be outfitted in their black bands Sunday as they pay tribute to him

He helped guide the Pistons to 3 championships, 5 finals appearances and many many fond memories... he was the owner for 35 years!!

He had a positive impact on my life and thousands of Piston fans all around the world.

You will be missed Bill, but never ever forgotten...

Maybe this is why they've gone to OT the last couple of games, to pay tribute to his thriftiness by playing for less? Long live Mr D, he's a good person!

    Wow. This is shocking.

He had been sick for a while. Used to go to every single game up until 2 seasons ago. I think he started missing games in 06/07.

    Still is surprising though.

Wonder who is going to take over the team now.

My sentiments exactly. Most of us have given him at least a little bit of crap, but I never realized how sick he's probably been, and how deep he's actually been involved as of late.

I had a similar thought related to Larry Brown coming back, but that will probably never happen regardless.
