Think about what defensive stats show up on the box score for an individual player. Defensive rebounding, blocks, steals, and fouls.

Now think if you had to evaluate your own offensive players only by how many offensive rebounds they get, how rarely they get blocked, how rarely they get picked, and how often they get fouled. It wouldn't give you 10% of the story. You'd want to know their scoring, their shooting efficiency, how well they pass the ball, etc.

In order to get the equal and opposite information for a defensive player, you have find out how they suppress scoring, how the opponent's FG% suffers, how many passes are discouraged or disrupted. Since there are no stats in the box score for those events, we have to get silly and look at correlations. That is where most people lose interest.

If these stats were easily quantifiable and 100% reliable, a new set of players would be appreciated and compensated.

Just as defense is a team effort, so is offense. However, skilled individuals are still needed and with a little work, you can pick out the important from the unimportant.

    Ramble, ramble....

I suspect defining the measures isn't all that hard and that most if not all teams have folks who watch the game tape and do the counting, but only for their own purposes. The problem for those of us on the outside is access, unless we want to go the Lee route.

Can we ask Lee to post his detailed findings?

Well since I posted this before we inked the guy I thought it'd be nice to revisit it.

Over the last 5 games he's avg'd 8pts and 4rbs. His best game came against the Knicks where he gave us 14pts and 10 rebs on 7-9 shooting in just 17mins.

He's shown that he's a true Professional, through all the DNP-CD's he never complained or stopped supporting his teammates.

He can really run the floor, his ball screens are getting better, his off the ball screens (AKA 2-chest screens) are getting better, and he & Rip are starting to develop a nice little chemistry on the lob pass. He's also shown that with those big ol' hands he can catch and finish with the best of them.

As Lee keeps stating, he's pretty decent in the post. I mean you can't go to the guy for 40 mins a night like Duncan, but he's good for about 6pts in the post, which is all we really need. And while he's not a good free throw shooter, he's not bad either, which means he actually makes teams pay for fouling him.

He leaves alot to be desired on the defensive end of the floor, you definitely need to surround him with guys who hustle and defend like Ben and JJ. Weezy also commits alot of dumb fouls and turnovers.

There's some good, there's some bad, but he's clearly an overall better player than KB (who makes more money than Weezy) and Maxiel (who also makes more money than Weezy). Remember folks this guy had 3 years where he averaged about 13.5ppg and 7.5rpg; if he can continue start, play about 20mpg and give us 10 and 5, we can work with that, plus he's still only 27 YEARS OLD!

Keep starting him IMO...yeah the D is suspect, but so is every big on the Piston team, not named Wallace...including Tay. The more weezy plays, the better his confidence and the more Rip finds him for the alley-oop. We still need a trade...i say move Tay for the missing bid defensive man...

He's starting to look like the old Wilcox b4 the injuries and b4 folks related him to trash (as was Ben with his dead legs).
I'd like to see his finish rate in the paint.... that's what we've been asking for.

The starting frontcourt of JJ-Wilcox-BBen is really good, and it's balanced too. Defensively, it's solid, and offensively you have scoring options with Wilcox in the paint and JJ doing his thing to a certain extent.
