We are 1-2 (.333) when Baynes does not play.
We are 30-30 (.500) when Baynes does play.

We are clearly better when he is in the lineup.

That's a 14 win difference over a full season or about the difference between the Cavs and the Pistons. I'd try to hold on to a guy like that.

I really want us to go to 3-3 against the division opponents this week. 1 down, 2 more to go. Make it happen Pistons Baynes!

Just don't lose until the end--not the first 6 minutes. They will be enough to convince me our record isn't the only thing that is a little tiny bit better now.

It'll be sort of funny when we win this one after the loss to Indiana. Still, you gotta enjoy it every time we beat these guys.

This won't be close. Kids playing among men. The Pistons don't have the heart to come back after a tough loss and upset the top team in the conference.

I hope they prove me wrong.

If Baynsey has to sit for this one the outlook is bleak.

Broken legged Andrew Bogut can probably still out run Baynsey.

What does the eye test tell you about how he fares when the other teams' starting centers are on the court?

In the last 5 games, we are losing by 26.5 points per 48 minutes when he's out there against a starting center.
In the last 10 games, we are losing by 15.3 points per 48 minutes when that is true.

This is the same thing that we see with Leuer coming to the starting lineup and the opposite of what we see when Tobias goes to the bench.

I like Baynes and believe that he may be the best backup center in the league, but that's because he's probably a low tier starting caliber center, which is why we are paying him so much. He will struggle against starters and he should find it easier against bench players. His plus minus is almost the same as Ish's and their playing time is highly correlated. For half the season, the team's leading scorer has been playing with the bench unit (Tobias Harris). The team's starting point guard has been playing like crap coming off an injury.

From what Boban is showing us on the court, he is performing like the guy we hoped he would be

    Per 36
    Stat: Marj/ Baynes
    Pts: 20.0/ 11.0
    Reb: 16.6/ 9.4
    Ast: 1.2/ 0.9
    Stl: 0.4/ 0.6
    Blk: 1.7/ 1.1

    WS: .214/ .116 (per 48)

    Salary: $7MM/ $6.5MM

Opp pts per 48: 95.4/ 95.9 (both are excellent)

I still have no idea why SVG is stockpiling centers for future use while thinking that he'll get outbid on a guy with a 12 PER. We have a lot of self inflicted wounds from a salary efficiency standpoint.

    Per SVG:
“Now he’ll make about triple next summer of what we’re giving him,” Van Gundy said in November. “We won’t be able to re-sign him, but the critics, who always know, killed us for overpaying him. Right now, we could trade him to 29 teams in about five seconds right now at what he’s making. So I don’t think we made too bad a deal.”

So, he'll make 3 x $6.5MM = $19.5MM next year? Our GM signed a $7MM guy to ride the bench because he's calculating that he would otherwise need to pay Baynes $20MM next year to keep him?

And if we could trade him in five seconds, why didn't we do that? Since we are going to lose him anyway and since we have his backup already signed and waiting for him to leave, why the hell didn't we get some future value for him? We will end the season as non champions either way, so I'd personally rather have the draft pick(s).

Boban is obviously a decent player. It appears that he looks like a total stiff, but he can make it work well.

I think SVG isn't even go to try with Baynes. It just doesn't make sense. If he declines his player option, which he probably should, then the starting bid is probably $12m a year for a team looking to shore up their inside D.

The other side to that coin is the question as to whether there are actually any teams that either
    A) want to spend $12+m on a guy who is effectively a career back-up and take a huge gamble that he will be able to produce as a starter
    B) Pay $12+m for a back up centre who isn't particularly flexible on the offensive end.

In both of those scenarios the interested team is going to have clear books and a dearth of talent at the C.

How many teams are actually in this scenario right now? We can straight up rule out GSW, CLE, NOP, SAC, BKN, MIA, BOS, ATL, MIL, MIN, PHI, UTA, MEM, ORL. All these teams have either too much money committed or way to much talent at the position to consider it.

Dallas would probably make a good destination. They don't have much at the C and they could use the defense. But can they afford with 3 dudes making $20m on the roster? Probably not. He would have to start and that just isn't a good situation.

Phoenix could be another? Alex Len's contract ends this year and he has been under-performing. They could take a gamble that he ends up replacing Tyson Chandler which isn't so hard these days.

Portland is another option - particularly as a trade partner. Ezeli is down for a long time but the money situation is very hard. They committed a lot of money to a very poor player (Crabbe).

This could have been a very bad chess move by SVG. There is an outside chance that post-June, his agent says take the player option and we get stuck with another year of $15m on back up centres.

I think SVG feels pressure to make the playoffs this year. Trading away Baynes would jeopardize this.

The sad thing is that I am pretty sure Baynes runs faster on the court than Dre.

Obviously PER is a broken metric looking at that list. Not a lot of winners at the top of it.

It might have something to do with a franchise player who doesn't show up to play every night, can't hit the broadside of a barn from the FT line, and tosses weak stuff towards the rim.

But hey, at least Dre is a DPOY caliber rim protector, right?
