Dave Cowens won't return as Pistons assistant

Chris McCosky / The Detroit News June 29th 2009

Auburn Hills -- Dave Cowens, NBA Hall of Famer and Pistons assistant the last three seasons, will not return to the bench next season.
Cowens, who has one year remaining on his contract, will be reassigned within the organization. He will assist president Joe Dumars and do some scouting.
The Pistons are left with three main bench assistants -- Darrell Walker, Pat Sullivan[IMG] and Harold Ellis.

Maybe we get the opposite formula as Cleveland with Q-ster as the HC and Laimbeer as the motivational assistant?

This definitely sets up an opportunity for Bill to slide in and get his feet wet and provide some tips to the big men. I am sure he will be more vocal than Cowens, and he may be able to add that defensive mindset that was lacking last season.

Detroit Piston Coach Assistant Coach, Bill Laimbeer, will look good on his resume`.

For Joe to pass on him this time would mean that he has issues with Bill.

    I'd be good with that.

With Kuester the offensive whiz, perhaps Laimbeer could complement with a defensive emphasis. I think Kuester will eventually prove to be a good hire, but the overall coaching staff seems pretty weak right now.

Darrell Walker sure seemed to have earned his pay last year. That's got to count for something.
