if orlando keeps the 7th seed in the east does we get the 16th or 17th pick
It depends on the rest of the league as well, not just the east. Check out NBADraft.net | Home for the current pick positions. Thats the one I use.
The recent slide of the Pacers and Knicks are really hurting the Pistons draft position. If the Magic makes the playoffs, the Pistons draft at best #15. There is still a big crowd of teams close to where Orlando currently stands. For example, the Magic has only 4 fewer losses than the #6 position in the draft (Seattle). Orlando's remaining schedule, however, is pretty easy: @Boston Indiana Minnesota Toronto Memphis @Milwaukee @Detroit @Philly Boston @Washington Miami Unless the Knicks or Pacers make a miraculous run to finish the season, it appears Orlando will make the playoffs. Again, this means a pick of #15 or worse.
Damn, that IS easy (for an average team like orlando). Also helps us that Acie is falling down the draft chart as well, but thats no given seeing as he is the #1 point guard in the draft. Maybe we can take a look at the second Gasol (Marc). If he is anything like Pau he will be a steal at #15-20.
Is it only teams that do not make the play offs that get the ping pong balls? I know the number of balls depends on where you finish but is it only those teams that are out of the play offs that get them?
That is correct. Out of the 30 NBA teams, 16 make the playoffs. The other 14 get ping pong balls. The odds look like this: 250 combinations, 25% chance of receiving the #1 pick199 combinations, 19.9% chance156 combinations, 15.6% chance119 combinations, 11.9% chance88 combinations, 8.8% chance63 combinations, 6.3% chance43 combinations, 4.3% chance28 combinations, 2.8% chance17 combinations, 1.7% chance11 combinations, 1.1% chance8 combinations, 0.8% chance7 combinations, 0.7% chance6 combinations, 0.6% chance5 combinations, 0.5% chance
There's already a thread with discussion about our Orlando pick in the draft sub-forum. We had an involved sequence of posts about how the lottery works starting on this page of that thread.
Also consider that Washington and Miami may already have their spots locked up when Orlando plays them in the last 2 games. Those 2 games might be easy for Orlando if that is the case. Memphis just beat LA though, so nothing is guaranteed.
All hope for Piston fans is not lost. Orlando is notorious for playing badly against teams they should beat. They play better against the teams they should lose to.
I'm surprised that chart has him going as low as #19. Yeah, I'm a sucker for genes. If Acie is gone go for Gasol.
If he grew the beard out a little more, it would look just like Pau.
