Just watched another Toronto game, which took place on Friday night, between the two I mentioned in the previous post.

Amir did not look all that impressive in the game. However, he was plus 18, tops on his team. What is more, 13 of that plus number was in the 4th quarter where the Raptors came back and won the game. Amir had a key three point play with 2:40 left in the game - he made his free throw after getting fouled tapping in a miss. That put Toronto up nine, and in pretty good control of the game from there.

Of note, Toronto is now a first place team, in a weak division though. Still, for Toronto fans, its a big deal. They are winning a lot since their big trade, and do not miss Rudy Gay any. PS, I have watched Rudy Gay play since the trade, and well, he seems to be trying to prove a point and is playing pretty darn well all the sudden.

Also, their lotto pick from last year is now starting. And TRoss is playing quite well. He nailed a few threes in this one. A solid all around guard, Lowry, is playing the point, and DeRosan - their top scorer now, rounds out their starting unit.

Brandon Knight scored 37 points tonight, his season high and second time he had topped 35 in the last 10 games as the Bucks won for only the second time in 10 games handling the injury riddled Lakers their 5th straight lost. 94-79. The win improved the Bucs to 7-24 and dropped the Lakers to 13-19. Knight's line was 37-2-8 and four steals. Khris Middleton had an uneventul night scoring only 5 points

With both teams having terrible time this month, the game was removed from the TV schedule and replaced with the Kings-Rockets game where Sacramento surprised the Rockets with a win in Houston. 110-106

Let me correct myself...the game in question is next week....Lakers at Houston which would have been a DHoward encounter on ESPN, but the network seeing a bad team in Lakers decided to change it the game to the Phoenix Suns/Twolves matchup which would be a better competitive matchup of two upcoming teams....that are both ahead of the Lakers in the standings.

The Lakers have actually lost six games in a row, the last three to worst teams in the league, Sixers, Jazz and Bucs. They are now trying to trade Gasol to the Cavs for Andrew Bynum where they would then waive him and save about $20Mill to offset some of that money they gave Kobe. If this does happen, the Clippers will try to sign Bynum to back up DJ and Blake.....if the Heat don't grab him first.

Jose Calderon is quietly having a nice season. He is putting up 12 points and 5 assists while leading the Mavs to a 22-16 record as their starting PG.

Been watching a couple of Milwaukee games. A bit of an update on Middleton. And a little on Knight.

First Knight. Milwaukee has kind of given up on Knight as their point guard. Instead, they play the no-defense playing Ridnour at point, and have moved Knight to where he certainly does not belong, at shooting guard. Knight has an occasional hot shooting night there, but in all, Milwaukee is losing every game since the move.

Worse, when they moved Ridnour in, they took Middleton out, of the starting unit. That was back on Dec. 31 against the Lakers. The last win Milwaukee has seen, or probably will see the rest of the year the way they are going. Milwaukee beat an injury plagued Laker team that day, and Ridnour went plus 30 in the game. Also the last, and just about the only game this year Ridnour has been plus in. His defense is that bad.

Now, Milwaukee does look more professional on offense with Ridnour and Knight in the backcourt running things. They just can't defend on the other end. The announcers seem in love with Ridnour, as Milwaukee loses game after game from his poor D, which they seldom mention.

Did Middleton deserve to be taken out of the starting unit. Hmm. His last few games before leaving the starting unit, he was 29 points, 27 points, 15, and 23 points. He also had an 8 and a 9 rebound game in there. Wrong guy to remove from your starting unit, unless you are totally planning on tanking. Maybe they are.

Middleton responded ok to the benching, still managing to be plus in some games just from his D, though his shot went missing from his use going down to a 3rd of what it was. He was put back in the starting unit for a couple of games several games later, but his shot did not return. I say, if Milwaukee does care to win any more games, let him start, give him the shots, they will start falling again.

In my opinion, now that Sanders is back, they should be starting Knight, Giannis, Middleton, Henson, and Sanders. Then they would have Mayo, Butler, Wolters, Ilyasova, Udoh, and Neal off the bench. They might win some games that way. They are so far down in the standings as the worse team in the league, I doubt a few wins will hurt there lotto chances.

Middleton had a hot streak for a while, but he has struggled since the New Year:

His scoring average went from 14.6 ppg in December to 5.0 ppg in January.

    His FG% dropped from 45% to 27%.
    His 3pt% dropped from 48% to 13%.
    His FT% dropped from 90% to 57%.

The whole thing is pretty embarrassing. There is a little nugget there that makes sense (diplomacy through celebrity), but partying with the Dictator after he fed a group of people to dogs probably doesn't accomplish what he was going for. Great rebounder though.

Austin Daye watch (since the Rudy Gay trade):

    12/8/2013 vs Lakers: DNP-CD
    12/10/2013 vs Spurs: 4pts (.200 FG%, .000 3FG %, .667 FT%), 1reb, 1ast, in 14 minutes
12/13/2013 vs Sixers: In street clothes
    12/14/2013 @ Bulls: 0, 0, 0... 0 in 1 minute of action
12/18/2013 vs Bobcats: In street clothes
12/20/2013 @ Mavericks: In street clothes
12/22/2013 @ Thunder: In street clothes
    12/23/2013 @ Spurs: DNP-CD
12/27/2013 @ Knicks: In street clothes
12/28/2013 vs Knicks: In street clothes
12/31/2013 @ Bulls: In street clothes
    1/1/2014 vs Pacers: DNP-CD
    1/3/2014 @ Wizards: DNP-CD
    1/5/2014 @ Heat: DNP-CD
    1/7/2014 @ Pacers: DNP-CD
    1/8/2014 vs Pistons: DNP-CD
    1/11/2014 vs Nets: DNP-CD
    1/13/2014 vs Bucks: 2pts (1.000 FG%), 2 reb in 3 minutes
1/15/2014 @ Celtics: In street clothes
1/17/2014 vs Wolves: In street clothes
    1/19/2014 vs Lakers: DNP-CD
    1/20/2014 @ Bobcats: DNP-CD
    1/22/2014 vs Mavericks: DNP-CD
    1/24/2014 @ Sixers: DNP-CD
    1/25/2014 vs Clippers: DNP-CD
    1/27/2014 @ Nets: DNP-CD

Here are the SG/SF/PF players who are currently ahead of him in the rotation (in minutes played within the last 30 days):
    DeMar DeRozan (starter)
    Terrence Ross (starter)
    John Salmons
Greivis Vasquez (PG/SG combo, so may not be the best to list here)
    Steve Novak
    Julyan Stone
    Landry Fields

With DeRozan hurt, this might be an opportunity for more Daye sightings. Although in the last Toronto game where DeRozan was absent he still got a DNP-CD. The only improvement is that he's been watching the games in uniform more often than suits lately.

Looks like a good time to try to get him back. He'd be our best 3-point shooter.

Sammy Mejia, Pepe Sanchez, Rodney White, and a 2nd rounder for Austin Daye.

Do they do it? Keep in mind that they actually have to take Mejia, Sanchez, and White.

Overall, we have 11 former players that are still in the NBA. 2 are in the West- Prince and VKrav and the rest are in the East.

Ranked by WS/48 for this season, here is who we miss the most (transaction information included for the casual internet fans and those who like to dwell in the past):
    1. Amir Johnson: .137 (3 team trade. We gave up Amir's expiring for Oberto's expiring, which was only partially guaranteed. We waived Oberto and saved $1.9M).
    2. Arron Afflalo: .118 (Afflalo and Walter Sharpe were traded to Denver for $350K cash and the 52nd pick in the 2011 draft-- Vernon Macklin. It sounds like Alf's agent requested a trade and JD obliged.)
    3. Khris Middleton: .061 (Middleton + Knight + Kravtsov for Brandon Jennings in S&T- 3 years at $8M/year)
    4. Nazr Mohammed: .048 (We waived Dupree and traded Mohammed and 3.5 years of his salary for Hermann and an expiring Brezec. We then traded Brezec for Juan Dixon. Used Dixon's presence to work up the courage to buy out Flip Murray.)
    5. Brandon Knight: .041 (Already detailed under Middleton)
    6. Jason Maxiell: .034 (He became a free agent and Orlando signed him)
    7. Tayshaun Prince: .022 (3 team trade. We gave up Prince and Daye for Jose Calderon and his expiring contract).
    8. V Kravtsov: .021 (Already detailed under Middleton)
    9. Austin Daye: .000 (Already detailed under Prince)
    10. Ben Gordon: -0.064 (We traded Ben Gordon + lottery protected 1st round draft pick for Corey Maggette. Pick is top 8 protected in '14, top 1 protected in '15, and unprotected in '16.)
    11. Mike James: -0.075 (became a free agent and was signed by the Bucks)

So, on the trade front, here are the sources and uses:

    We gave up:
    Amir Johnson (got through draft)
    Aaron Afflalo (got through draft)
    Walter Sharpe (got through draft)
    Khris Middleton (got through draft)
    Brandon Knight (got through draft)
Kalishnakov Kravtsov (found in rubble after battle)
Nazr Mohammed (FA signing- Joe's brilliant idea)
Tashaun Prince (got through draft, resigned)
    Austin Daye (got through draft)
Ben Gordon (FA signing- Joe's most brilliant idea ever)
1st round draft pick (automatically assigned to us by David Stern)

    We received:
    $350K cash
    Vern Macklin
Brandon Jennings (with 3 year commitment)
    Walter Herrmann for 2 seasons
Juan Dixon's expiring (swapped Primo Brezec's expiring for it to get more use out of it for season)
    Jose Calderon's expiring
    Corey Maggette's expiring

In summary, we turned 8 draft picks and 2 FA signings into Brandon Jennings, $350,000, 3 expiring contracts, and 2 bench scrubs.

This analysis, to reiterate, is just a look at the transactions that involve guys who are still in the league. It's not a thorough analysis of Joe's record by any stretch.

I forgot a lot of these details, so it was interesting to look them up.

On the draft front, it would seem that the best outcome is for us to tank out the season, keep our top 8 pick, and then kick butt next year and forfeit our 20th+ pick in 2015.

Maybe we can even make a trade this year that insures that scenario and gets us an expiring plus a first rounder next year to replace the one that we're short.

I'm not for trading moose, but his would do it I would imagine.

Yes, but Joe got rid of Flip Murray. Kind of makes it all seem worthwhile if you think about it like that.

Trading BoT's expiring may actually help prevent the anti-tank.

Most of our trades seem to be for the purpose of getting out of fa signings that joe made. Would be easier if he'd stay out of the fa market for a while and trade for players.
