Actually, "America the Beautiful" is a Ray Charles' staple. Nobody sings it like Ray. He's got background singers on the original recording and I'm always yelling, "Ray, you don't need 'em. You're great by yourself."
Flip had 15 good games 3-4 seasons ago and is still living off them. His shooting %'s are horrible, he doesn't rebound or pass, he doesn't get to the free throw line, he has no range, and he doesn't play defense. You can't get much with 1.8 million, but if this is what you can get then why bother.
Yep, that's what I was thinking of. IMO, NOBODY on this planet will ever sing it better than Ray. EVER!
I hear it was close to a two-year $3.6 million contract. If he did better in the playoffs his price would of been higher. He should be able to bounce back and have a good season and PLAYOFFS!
Flip Murray had several game-winning shots and late-game scoring runs in 4th quarters last season. Looks like Anakin had a feeling Flip would be coming way back in February...
I'm not totally against this one, but I would have liked to see Delk back instead. So, the bench becomes: Hunter, Murry, Delfino, Dice and Davis? The points coming from the 2-4 spots. Still room for our draft pick, Acker (hope he's signed), Johnson and Max.
Murry averaged 13.5 PPG, 2.8 for the Cavs but it too him 36.7 mins to do it. Against the Pistons he avg 5.6 PPG and 1.7 APG in 32.7 mins. Shot .218 from the field. If you are looking for another early post-season exit then Murry is your guy. I hope Acker wins his spot. Basically this is a case of you get what you pay for. Claxton got what 5mil/yr? 1.7/yr does not buy what it once did.
I think a less is more approach would have been better. googling the guy you don't get warm fuzzies. team efficiency ratings drop. people talk about lack of D (PERFECT!!) a suspect shot (we can work with him on that.) and bad decision making (hey, popping a 3 with 16 seconds on the clock minimizes the chances of a TURNOVER trying to run a play!) The best thing about flip is that he's probably better than mo. But right now I don't know if he's a better fit here than mo.
Flip is not a small forward, however that worries me as we go into the season with SF depth looking like this Prince / Delfino / Maxiell-Johnson Should anything happen to Tayshaun (he's played nearly (?) every darn game for 3 years), we don't have any experience at the 3.
Tay was given a shot and worked out. Let Delf get a shot. its better than some 1.5 million dollar cast off (boy that just doesn't sound right to my white collar self) coming in and giving us "experience"
I hear ya, but these guys that back up Tay need to get some minutes. I certainly don't want Tay to go down, but I want to see some other guys play, too, particularly Delfino, JMax and Johnson. Your post is sensible but I'm tired of waiting on the youngsters. I want to see them in there other than garbage time. I think our situation at the 5 might be even worse.
Yup. Its the Pistons Circle of Life and it only takes 6 steps. 1. Draft player 2. Let player rot on bench for 1-3 seasons 3. Trade player for draft pick and all important "cap space" 4. Sell the trade to fans by saying the cap space will be used to resign key players 5. Let key players leave via FA without getting anything in return 6. Repeat....
I Like Both Flips. Don't Complain Yet At Least See How The Season Goes. I Think The Pistons Are Going To Be Good This Year...give Em A Chance, Will Ya?
Flip = GAMEOVER!!! I just hope that we are just adding contracts so we can package them for a trade of some sort down the road. Sure I would have been happy with Flip Murray last year coming off of a finals trip. However now we need to be going in a different direction. Here again we are asking a undersized 2 guard to play back up point. Is Flip a playmaker ? NO.. Does he slash to the basket?? NO!!!!! Bargin basement FA signings = .500 team I am very disappointed because 2 years ago this Pistons team was on the verge of something great. All the Pistons had to do was spend a little money every year to make minor tweaks and keep the bench average. The Pistons instead started selling off pieces of the team like crack head selling off his parents silverware and jewelry. We saw a bench that was productive go to being near last in the league. We went from having a bench with a healthy mix of vets and youngins to having a bench of youngins that played good occasionally but at times stunk up the place and never really gained the confindence of the head coaches.
VJ comparison drawn in mlive article (but not by A. Sherrod). Ha ha. Mods: Article also posted on articles thread. http://www.mlive.com/pistons/stories/index.ssf?/base/sports-1/1144856410288080.xml&coll=1
I think Murray can add some instant offense. That has been sorely missing over the last several years from the Pistons bench. I'm not sure if we can proclaim him as the next microwave quite yet. Perhaps the toaster oven...
The key issue is Flip vs. Flip. Can Saunders' system make Murray a more efficient scorer? And something important to note is that Murray really doesn't score much when he comes off the bench. He needs heavy minutes to get his game rolling. A rhythm player. We'll see. I believe that CB played so much was due to his familiarity with Flip's playbook and philosophy. Murray's PT may be directly tied to his ability to grasp that system quickly and execute it efficiently.
Holy sh##. The pissing and moaning needs to end. I'm embarrassed how spoiled we Piston fans have become. We just got a bargain. We got a guy who brings a spark off the bench. And you all want to cry about it. Sh##. I know we're all pissed that Goin' to Work is all but extinct. Blame the League for that. Blame the fickle NBA fans who make that type of ball unmarketable. Blame Flip Saunders or Ben Wallace or Chauncey Billups or whoever. But let's take a wait-and-see approach with Murray before we crucify him.
