Guards don't thrive when you're playing smallball?

    I did not know this.

They didn't last year and we tried it out a lot. AI averaged a career low in terms of points per game, and it was a full 5 points lower than any other season in his career.

Ben Gordon has a 27% career usage rate. Stuckey is at 23%. Iverson is at 32%. When you add them up, that means that the guards would have to take 82% of the shots in our offense in order for them all to get the touches than they are used to. And when you're not playing inside out basketball, it makes it much harder on the guards to get open shots.

If small ball was such a great idea, then Nelly would never have fallen in love with it.

Are we really looking to use that much of our cap space for a back-up SG? If we sign Gordon then Rip needs to be traded to try and fill our other gaps.

If we start the season with the above roster, look for no or very little improvement over last year. As a matter if fact, we would be worse on the defensive end.

How can you say that about the man who popularized fish ties?

Remember though that Nellie was also Manute Bol's biggest fan.

Agree with this. I think Gordon would want to start. Puts you in the same pickle as last season with too many guards.

This is shaping up OK, assuming that we trade Rip for a big.

But we are definitely going to have a lack of depth in the paint, which will be a big difference from prior years.

If we are able to trade Rip for Bosh, then we will have to include either Kwame or Maxiell.

So, we will clearly have to pull some cheap vet bigs together if we have any money left. We will probably have to get Trent Plastered on the active roster too.

That was last year though, with two HUGE variables of an incompetent coach and a guard that was staging a nightly hissy fit for one reason or another.

I'm sure if you performed such an analysis on a wider scale you would find that smallball is notoriously guard friendly.

You can do what you will, but I won't trash a lock for the hall of fame.

He's a great teacher, and I don't think any coach worth his salt in the NBA will deny that.

Yeah, but you can't build a champion without building a defense and an undersized shooter at one of the most offense heavy positions for opponents is not a great way to get started.

Joe should know this himself being listed at 6'4" and a damn good offensive player, Joe earned his stripes defending and I don't see Gordon every becoming that player. Joe got started early...Gordon has been in the league and has never improved his D.

Rip at least had the size to content players at that position (being 6'7"), he didn't have to become NBA All Defense to put up a reasonably good level of resistance. Gordon kind of reminds me of a slightly bigger version of Atkins or Jameer Nelson.

Exactly, what I was thinking. Rip, even w/ his defensive limitations, is a few notches above Gordon. Gordon will also get lit up for a bunch of points. I don't think he is an upgrade over Rip considering the overall package.

If Charlie V. becomes a Piston he also becomes my instant favorite (until he does something to change that).

So if Detroit signs Gordon and Villenueva that means there is no way they can sign David Lee as a FA, right? :(

Not without trading somebody - which seems like a sure thing if Gordon signs. If Rip (or Tay) goes, then there is money for Lee. Though with CV it seems more likely Joe would be looking for a center.

Speaking of signing- these guys have been there for at least half an hour now. What's taking so long? I want to see either white or black smoke rising from a corner of the Palace.

    Eyebrows are over rated.

Anyhow, I hear Fabio cut off some of his hair and left the clippings and some Elmer's glue in the Piston's locker room. We should have guessed the rest...

Man, I would much rather have David Lee. I wouldn't want both Lee and Villanueva.... Charlie would play the 4 but Lee isn't a center outside Dantoni's system.
